What sayings, old wives tales or legends do you put a lot of stock in?

    One of the expressions my grandmother used to say was "show me your friends and I'll tell you who you are". It made me think carefully about the company I kept and that the people I assort with may inform other people's judgement of me.

    Any that you can think of that you put a lot of stock in?

    I'd imagine lots of the "good" ones have been lost forever - people only tend to repeat the ones that suit them - some tea,biscuits n dementia powered version of confirmation bias kinda thing

    My grans favourite bit of wisdom is remember that while it's nice to be important, it's more important to be nice.

    Also, judge a person by how they speak of and treat service staff - a slight departure from Samuel Johnsons "The true measure of a man is how he treats those who can do him absolutely no good", but valid enough.

    My dad is fond of saying that two people can't know a secret: it's only a secret if no one else knows.

    My Russian friends favourite saying from his homeland is "Without torture, no science".

    Another one which has helped me a lot when dealing with people the last few years is:

    Characterise people by their actions and you will never be fooled by their words....

    Always be nice to people on the way up - you never know when you might need them on the way down.

    Only if it was flat! And you could only have dry toast!
    The only time you ever saw lucozade was when you were sick or in hospital!
