What sayings, old wives tales or legends do you put a lot of stock in?

One of the expressions my grandmother used to say was "show me your friends and I'll tell you who you are". It made me think carefully about the company I kept and that the people I assort with may inform other people's judgement of me.

Any that you can think of that you put a lot of stock in?

Give a homeless man a fish and you will feed him for the night. Give him a fishing rod and he will sell it and buy a bag of cans.

Give a man a fire and he'll be warm for a day, set him on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

    Hey, it's true!

I'd imagine lots of the "good" ones have been lost forever - people only tend to repeat the ones that suit them - some tea, biscuits n dementia powered version of confirmation bias kinda thing

My grans favourite bit of wisdom is remember that while it's nice to be important, it's more important to be nice.

Also, judge a person by how they speak of and treat service staff - a slight departure from Samuel Johnsons "The true measure of a man is how he treats those who can do him absolutely no good", but valid enough.

My dad is fond of saying that two people can't know a secret: it's only a secret if no one else knows.

My Russian friends favourite saying from his homeland is "Without torture, no science".

People never use the second part:

See a penny, pick it up
All the day you'll have good luck.

Pass it on, to a friend
And your luck will never end.

I think its about sharing good fortune paying back dividends.

Another one which has helped me a lot when dealing with people the last few years is:

Characterise people by their actions and you will never be fooled by their words....

Depends on context. If you spend your life travelling around Ireland in a caravan, for example...

A manager I worked with when I was having trouble with alcohol always said. The first drink is the dearest. It took me years to understand what he meant.

My mam always used to tell me to sip some 7up when you are sick like as though it was some kind of medicine.

A few people have told me that their mother said the same thing.

Never a lender nor a borrower be.

My granny said that, and a load of other wise advice. I've been both a borrower and a lender, and sometimes it works out fine, but surprisingly often it doesn't.
