Is the iPad mini not a bit too small for reading news? Could I read a PDF on it comfortably too?

It is perfect. We have the iPad and the mini and the mini is handier as it can be held in 1 hand. I don't find any difference in using the mini and I use the normal iPad every day

Yeah, I'd agree....have a Samsung tablet also and find the mini very comfortable to use instead. Also have a cheap 7" Lenovo tablet which I find less comfortable so the slightly bigger mini is the right balance. you can increase the font size slightly with the times app. Its a versatile size. Small enough to be mobile, but big enough to read with comfort...

put it this way, its bigger than a kindle which I assume millions of quids worth of research has proven to be the optimum size for reading with ease.

    Edit. Arrived today. That's prompt.

I tried to take up this offer earlier but after going through all the details, including my card details, I received a message sayin "An error has occured". No details as to what the error was or why it happened. Has this happened to anyone else?

Went into Harvey Norman had a look at flexirent for the iPad mini 2 , working out for the same iPad 33.50 for 12 months , after 12 months you don't even own it , you can make them an offer to buy it but they may not accept , the times deal is way better plus there's no need for bank statements credit checks etc , ordered one today from the times , can't wait to get it

Just got an update for the mobile app (android phone) and it is waaaaayyyyy better than it was. The old app was ugly and dated looking, the new one is quite swanky.

One thing I don't like is that the new website (thetimes.ie) now just auto directs you to the Irish section of thetimes.co.uk. I know it's essentially the same thing, but it does make you feel like an after thought...

Very interested in this offer - would be very interested in hearing other's thoughts on a couple of issues.

    1. Do you get a "paper" edition on the ios/android apps

    2. Compared to the printed version - what are the main drawbacks, do you get all printed sections, news review, culture, magazine, sport (including gaa coverage), etc. ?

    3. Is there anywhere showing some screenshots of recent editions of the app editions - apart from itunes

    4. As I already have a version 1 Ipad - would the relevant app be available for this ?

Any other advantages/disadvantages experienced by anyone that has taken up this offer.

Would sign up in a jiffy if there was some way this deal could also include a copy of the real paper every week through token or something.

I think paper versions are only on the tablet versions of the android and iOS apps but can only confirm for iOS....you do get all the sections in the Sunday times version and is very easy to navigate with the iOS tablet app which you'll likely use with the free iPad mini.....won't work with ipad1...was in similar boat as had to wait for iPad mini to come with a visitor ( am living abroad) and wanted to use the app on iPad 1 but needs at least iOS 6 or something.....

Thanks for the reply on that.

Pity no option regarding the ST app for an Ipad 1.

Also, good to hear that all sections are available on the "paper" version.

Presume you also have access to back dated editions.

    Thanks again

No worries...not sure about back dated issues.I know you can go back a week anyway but not sure about longer...

    3-4 weeks if memory serves...

Edit: checked emails. I subscribed on 8th February. Dispatch email received on 3rd March. Think I received it the next day.

That sounds about right.....you have to fulfil a 14 day cooling off period before you are committed to the contract. Only then will they dispatch the ipad. Takes up to 10 working days after the 14 day period which was the case for me so 3 to 4 weeks is a safe estimate.

Are you talking about paying extra for the 'paper' version?

Am I right in saying that with this offer you only access to the app content, and would still have to purchase the Sunday Times for €3 or whatever it is each Sunday to get the full content.

No,the full content is available through the app.

As for also getting the paper, sure what's the point in that, Times Inc gonna take a hit on profits for the craic?

    I don't mean a physical paper, if that's what you're getting at.

There's the Times app which you can subscribe to, gives you daily news. It's not the same as the newspaper. As far as I know that's what you get access to with this deal.

There's the full paper you can download, laid out like the physical paper, this costs €3 per download. Can you confirm this isn't what you get with the subscription.

Somebody else asked if you got a voucher for paper version, sorry, that wasn't directed at you.

You get the full papers for the whole week with the subscription.

wow, that's an amazing offer so.

I had digital access membership before at €5 per week and it didn't give me the e-paper.

Finally took the plunge on this.

    Also regarding the ipad 1 and getting the app - managed this by following details at;
    http://apple.stackexchange.com
    Thread;
How to install apps which require iOS 6 on a 1st gen. iPad?

    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/135060/how-to-install-apps-which-require-ios-6-on-a-1st-gen-ipad

Here's the easiest way to download apps on to your iPad 1. I know it works because I've done it. First, on your iPad 1, go to: Settings ==> Store ==> under "Apps" make sure it says 'OFF'.

Next go onto your computer (it doesn't matter if you're using PC or Mac) and open iTunes software. Then go to the iTunes store and download all the apps you want to be on your iPad.

If the iTunes on the computer and your iPad are both signed into the same Apple ID, and the iPad is connected to internet, then go on your iPad to App Store ==> Purchased ==> click on an individual app you want to install.

Once you select install you'll get a message pop up that says:

"The current version requires iOS 6.1 or later, but you can download the last compatible version." ==> Download

There that should at least allow you to have most apps on your iPad 1. Most of them will work, but sometimes even once you have the app installed on your iPad 1 it still won't run correctly. That's just tough luck. But in my experience that's not too common usually they work fine.

And this worked for me - for the Times & ST (IE) and Times app - but NOT for the Times Sport.

Also, in case I am missing something on the Android (phone app) - I can only find today's edition and not last 6 days ?

Any way of expanding storage on these ipads? I've only had Android phones and have an old Chinese Android tablet that takes a USB stick which is loaded up with movies and shows for the kids. Great for long journeys when we visit the in-laws. Ipads dont take USB sticks so whats my options for storing movies/shows?

Pity, as I would definitely sign up to this if there was some way of expanding storage.
