Google's Orkut comes to mind. At one point it was the main social media site in Brazil, and I think also popular in India. If you searched for anything Brazilian you were bound to be taken to one of Orkut's communities. It worked really well, until it was redesigned to be a crappy Facebook clone. Why? Because international audiences were using Facebook, which meant that surely Orkut had to be like Facebook. Within a few years it became the internet equivalent of a barren wasteland.

Google+ which has largely been a total flop is another example of why attempting to clone Facebook, even with a MASSIVE audience like Google's Gmail subscriber base, is a bad idea.

People use Twitter because it's Twitter, they use Facebook because it's Facebook, they're actually verbs at this stage.

    Boards.ie is Boards.ie .. it *IS* a forum. That's the whole point.

I don't want a washing machine that does a half-arsed job of the hoovering. I'd prefer to use an actual hoover.

Omg! Call me slow, but I just found the legacy button. (Also thought I couldn't use it abroad).

Yay, I can use boards again :-)

If, yeah. But the percentage of my life that I spend away from home (without a laptop) and/or at an airport AND have time to be logging on to any internet community is tiny compared to my work and leisure hours spent in front of a proper screen.

Not to mention that a huge % of browsing happens on mobile phones generally and they're getting bigger and bigger. My Nexus 6P is 5.7" display for example.

Oh wow! 5.7" That's ... that's ... a whole 1" bigger than my phone ... or 10" smaller than my laptop, which is the smallest screen I use regularly, or 138" smaller than the screen I use for watching videos!

I have no problem with people being happy to browse one tab at a time on a miniscule screen, but I resent being force fed 16pt font sizes by default and text boxes that take up only one quarter of the screen when my preference is for a display that's at least twice as wide as my head.

It's not just Boards.ie - hundreds of websites are now optimised for mobile browsing (even to the extent of deliberately showing videos in portrait orientation  ) with no attempt made to design for "old fashioned" computer users. That goes against the spirit - and definition - of responsive web design. I particularly liked Boards.ie because it seemed to have resisted the notion of changing for change's sake. Obviously that's no longer the case. :(

Because the majority of web browsing comes from mobile devices.

It's all about convenience and pixel density and good eye sight.

I carry a 15" MacBook Pro for working on but, for basic browsing and posting this display is perfectly adequate.

The 142" phones are a bit of a nightmare to carry tbh.

I like it enough to not mind.. Full width makes a huge difference though. I get the look they're going for but I messed around with the css and got it looking far nicer and more readable in about 3 minutes. Oversized icons and not enough definition takes away from it.

Extra post since the edit button doesn't work..

Reddit is upping their game. Lots of the bigger subs have gotten pretty decent design..

    https://www.reddit.com/r/showerthoughts
    https://www.reddit.com/r/drupal/
    https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/
    https://www.reddit.com/r/books/
    https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/
    https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/

Especially books.. Lots of room in reddit for customization and I guess it's just going to get better. Add in RES and Reddit Flattener and I think the whole site has a great look.

I certainly wouldn't use Reddit as a benchmark for any redesign! :pac:

The inconsistency comes from the fact that subreddits can have their own custom CSS, I believe.

You can disable all of them if you prefer consistency.
I stop in on about 20 subs a day and I like that they're so different so I know where I am when I'm flicking through lots of tabs. Most boards users just go on AH so it's not much of an issue.

Anyways, back to this boards skin. I'm starting to dislike it more.. I'm not sure how to multi-quote or edit posts.

Download the Reddit Enhancement Suite and it becomes a much nicer experience. I really can't stand looking at vanilla Reddit on a desktop. It's utterly horrible.

Its interesting that despite the negativity of users that Management haven't come online to allay any fears we might have over the way the site is going.
All we've seen are announcements and bug fixes.

Seems to be a case of "push on regardless " and hope people keep using the site.

In the footer, the link "Beta" has changed to "Responsive" ... which currently seems to be anything but.

Or is it being really clever and responding to my desire to have the old style site? :pac:

Edit: OK, I'm really confused now - there's the Touch site, the Responsive site, the Full site and the Legacy site ...:confused: ... but one can mean another depending on what order you click them ...

I think I'll just go and listen to the death notices on Radio na Gaeltachta for a while to settle my aged nerves. :pac:

They are going to be disappointed. Very disappointed. There might not be a sudden mass exodus, in protest at their foolishness, but people will drift away, post less, visit less... and the site will die.

    I agree.

Managed to get back to the standard site, but when I had to use that other new horrible thing it just felt like way more effort than it is worth, and I for one am not sure I could be bothered with it when the time comes, which is a shame.

If this goes through this site will become the new Bebo.
P.S I am abroad and the legacy site is working just fine.

This is my gripe with all this "responsive" sh!te we're being fed these days. This, and any other site that claims this property is actually anything but.

Same here, although had thought otherwise from what others had said, so very glad to be back to normal.

You're playing into their hands by describing it as the legacy site. They've already got you.

Maybe an organized 24 hour abstinence from the forum for all boardsies who disagree with the newly proposed format would force managements hand?

Site is horrendous now on my preferred browsing method- full site on opera mobile using single column view. Can't escape beta no matter what I try. It's fine on desktop because I can use legacy, but on mobile, it's awful. I've to scroll back up to top to change page, have no thanks button or even a 'first unread' option. "my threads" doesn't load. There's ads everywhere. Whatever happened to "if it ain't broke..."?
I'm mainly a lurker, but I imagine I'll be doing most of my lurking on reddit henceforth. Pity.

Seriously it looks completely tacky and makes the site look cheap and doesn't look professional at all, its like something from 1998. It is truly awful. I'd say someone who never used or heard of boards before would probably think it's a scam site by going onto it.

I've seen people in college in first year design css layouts a thousand times better this. The font, the whiteness, the overall layout between threads on the homepage looks like a teenager did it in his spare time

The whiteness, the font, it looks horrendous and your straining to see anything

Why try to fix something that's not broken?
