I can use the legacy site from abroad FWIW

So can I, but I think mods are given a pass as the mod tools haven't been fully rolled out in the beta yet.

Abroad and very very thankful to have found the legacy button, the new layout is utter *&^%#. I know almost everyone is resistant to change and I gave it a go to check if it was just the change that was the issue, it's not, it looks like a child on acid designed some of the new layouts.

Cloudflare was a complete FU and made Boards impossible to use until recently, don't know if the issue was fixed or cloudflare turned off, whichever it was please do not change again!

Cloudflare was protection against the DDOS which was crippling the site. It was a necessary evil.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Now what will be used to protect against the design attack which is crippling the site? :pac:

Cloudflare crippled the site for overseas users, the solution to crippling of the site was to cripple the site?!

The change look pretty but functionally it's a mess IMO...

    1. I have to move the mouse way too much to navigate the menu system now - it consumes the entire screen compared to the neat drop-down menu system before.
    2. There's too much space allocation to each individual post, meaning I have to scroll more to read the same volume of content.
    3. The sticky threads are hidden on each forum and when you do click the "Important Threads" button, you can't see if there's a new post on them or not.
    4. On the mobile site I can't find the navigation menu at all. The only way to move around the site to get to the forum you want is to wait for a thread in that forum to appear in the recent posts... or click into a random forum and try move laterally that way.

Thank fook for the legacy mode and dark theme...

That other abomination is pure muck! In the wise words of Torben Ulrich... "Delete that"

Sorry, but no ! I might ajust to the new desktop look, though with the amount of white space the eye is not drawn to the thread titles immediately. However on the phone (which I use mostly ) it is unuseable. And of course my forums/threads do not work (my threads seem to go straight to messages).

And another thing .... I cannot see how to edit a post. I just wanted to add my voice to the Cloudflare and overseas users issue - it seems really excessive.

There does however seem to be a decision that boards should try and be a Facebook/Twitter/Inatagram type platform because they're successful

Even though Twitter is flatlining! Can't post links as a new user but google it.

But anyway, none of those things are discussion sites. People come to boards.ie and websites like that to discuss things. It fulfills a different role to the big social media behemoths.

Re: the lack of new registrations. I think there was a serious glitch on that front based on my own experience.

Last night, I managed to register after months of trying. Months. January was when I started trying. I'd pick a username then have to keep coming up with new email addresses trying to register because I'd pick a name than use my email address, and would get an error message. So I'd go back and pick a new name and use the same email address, only to be told that that email address was in use! So I'd try to login in using the first username I picked and the email address to no avail. I'd also not have been sent any email by boards.ie. So, I tested it out with a new email address and username. Same story. I'd try to join periodically, and find myself in the same situation. Last night I decided to try again, and lo and behold it worked. Finally.

Do you think people have been trying to open up new accounts the last while but just simply haven't been able to? And then just give up?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 662 ✭✭✭Maireadio

And finally, just to add. I love Facebook. Love it. Absolutely love it. An unfashionable thing to admit, but there you go. And I just cannot see the merit in boards trying to ape it and other social media sites. If someone like me who loves one the big social media sites doesn't see the point, what about all the people who love boards but are ambivalent to, or downright dislike, social media?

If that i the case then that's pretty daft. That said the number of those who close their accounts and come back, sometimes within hours suggests it's easy enough to register, never mind the rolling reregs that sign up. One weirdo signs up every single day, or close to it. Maybe you've an email server it doesn't like or are posting from overseas or something?

Yeah, I'm not sure what the issue was really! I'm in Ireland. I tried on a few different laptops in a few different places and it was same. But it might not be a constant problem, maybe it just was every time I tried? But if it happened to other people too, they might just give up!

Nah I've consulted the god of the interwebs(all praise his holy routers) and he tells me it's just you, you effin weirdo. :D That is an odd one alright.

Oh it would have an affect alright. I remember one forum I tried to join and the procedure was "an admin will approve you". ORLY? Get bent. Can't recall if they approved me or not TBH.

Absolutely. I'm a member of a forum which required admin approval to join but it was never very active due to that. And since an open forum was set up on Boards to discuss the same subject matter, it has been a complete ghost town.

Ooh, so that's what it looks like. Anyone know if this "Add your reply here" thing coming up in people's posts is connected?

Well when I first tried to join it said I was banned! And that was long before the new boards came out. So I don't know what happened, and I very nearly gave it up as a bad job but I was vexed at being told I was banne for no reason, so I thought I'd send off an email to ask what yiz all had against me, and they let me in then!!

Though what I actually wanted to ask here was how do we click on to the last posts read, as opposed to very last post (which now seems to be up and running, comes up in bold anyway)?

TBH I tried the new layout for a time, but I found it pretty much unusable. Added effort to reading, browsing and posting. Not fit for purpose, for me anyway. And not the time to be trying to shoehorn something like this in if the numbers are stagnating.

Well we who are "abroad" dont have any choice so we have to put up with the new site.

Interestingly enough, using android handheld devices "the Abroad" section cant be clicked on because its the last item under the "regional" menu and its below the menu bar and cant be clicked.

I'd report it as a bug but I have no idea where to do that.

I'm abroad and have been able to click the 'legacy' button and go back to the proper site, and others have reported the same also....?

There is a thread in Feedback.
Maybe a VPN with a server in Ireland would help our" foreign" users .

I get the beta when I use my VPN on a foreign server.

TBH given the widespread complaints I am shocked that the forcing of the site on overseas members hasn't been suspended until the new site is fit for use.
