That's one thing alright. The touch site (and surely m.boards) works quite well even on EDGE data connections because it's quite light. Responsive sites would not, because they still download the page elements that you can't see.

Agreed. But for some reason the boards.ie staff think otherwise!

If they couldn't navigate this site as is then frankly they aren't the people to be asking for guidance as the "complex interface" was more complex and clunky when Boards was at it's peak and newbies were coming in thick and fast. Outside of Reddit(whose design is very clunky and cluttered and not exactly jump in and go) what are the largest forums on the interwebs and what general layout do they use? Oh yeah, that's right.

This IMH is classic cart before the horse thinking. The numbers are dropping off, therefore it must be the interface, cos we can fix that. It's like companies losing marketshare bringing in some gimps who describe rooms as "spaces" to rearrange the furniture, paint the walls in bright colours and install beanbags. The product is everything and contrary to the markeshing types the product of Boards.ie is and always has been the sense of community and the sense that that community is not top down. It is a real standalone among internet sites on this score. Anything that alienates that community is very dangerous and without that community all that will remain is at best the Talk To sites, a sub contracted helpline for some businesses.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

Oh God. I'm abroad and this has just been foisted on me. I hate it! So much fking blank space - there aren't even ads on some of it - just blankness! Like.. for why!?!?!

The only good thing is the Legacy site link. This would be absolutely woeful if it was made permanent.

I agree with Wibbs, in that they have executed their plan fairly well, considering resources. Its just very unfortunate that their plan is horrible.

In my experience, people use boards because they like that vbulletin look and feel, and the community sense and discussion that the forums and threads bring. This is what both attracts and retains the users.

Moving away from this, and trying to compete with the websites and social media alternatives that the user base largely avoids for discussion, is only going to leave boards as a diluted product that is neither here nor there, and will ultimately fade out.

I resent the fact that this is seemingly being done to placate the kind of people who don't know how to use a laptop.

In a technical sense I agree, I'm sure redesigning a site is challenging and huge job. But I don't think it can be characterised as a job well done if it turns customers away.

It seems the plan is being executed in spite of how users feel about it, not because of how they feel.

We're not the customers though, we're the product. All that delicious ad space on the new site will please the customers. So long as Boards doesn't run out of product, that is.

Just another to say the new layout is sh!te. It's impossible to navigate, loss of functionality and putting form over function. As others have said, thank heavens for the Legacy Site button.

Edit, why did they change the front end? I know some back end maintenance is needed every so often, but whats the design logic for loss of functionality?

I liked a quick look through recent posts. Now there are only a few.

Also too much space between posts so a lot more scrolling or is that just overthinking it?

Is it only on my laptop that the new layout has a much smaller window to read posts and reply?

It's very small on my laptop (which is funny, given that everything else is way too big!) but it is resizeable.

EDIT: Went on the beta one just to check that. Then I tried to edit my post and the button did nothing. Yay... It's like they did no preliminary testing before releasing it as a beta version. You're only supposed to use the beta stage to iron out the last niggly and obscure bits, not the basic functionality.

My initial reaction after 10 minutes across mobile and desktop platforms is that it is much more mobile friendly which is entirely understandable. It has a much cleaner feel and so far clear of those spammy ads which broke my balls in vbulletin.

Like others have said, change is always an ordeal for some people but they eventually acclimatise. Some sites have made a complete abortion of their redesigns but so far I am giving this a tentative approval.

Just one thing on the user profile page. What sort of order are the users posts organised because I can't make sense of it?

The Feedback thread is here for those who haven't seen it.. Dav has expanded a bit on the endgame:

The DB is the simple bit, we're essentially keeping the VBulletin schema. It's the middle (our own API and Symfony) and front (Bootstrap) are the hard parts.

One could easily argue that the last 10 years have been that gradual change you're suggesting, but ultimately you have to rip the bandage off. Touch. and the Talk To forums for example are a significant departure from VBulletin, that's the path we've been on to bring us here.

We did a survey a year ago (in fact it was a year ago last week), so that along with anecdotal and written feedback about the site we've been receiving for years is what we're basing this on. We're a discussions and communities site. That is not the same as "we're a forums site" and we shouldn't impose limitations on ourselves or how we think about where the site goes (money no object? I'd personally do away with forums completely for example and just tag content so that you can join in any conversation anywhere, but that's not happening any time soon and it'd require a hell of a natural language processor to apply tags in a smart manner ).

    That's the future apparently!!

I assume the real motive is to get boards making a profit via online ads as I believe it has never broken even. I think the decline I expected after boards was bought has just accelerated.

But it can't really be when the aim is turn it into what has been said. Lose the forums and floods will leave, where's the ad revenue in that? There has to be something else because they can't be that out of touch.

They've been losing, but now they have to finish dead last, then they can move the forum to Miami.ie

The legacy option, at least while abroad, doesn't work.
You cannot check your subscribed threads, you need to go through sub forums to find it, you cant switch to the old site, you can quote and you cant change your settings.
Wtf was the point in this? Granted yes on a laptop it may look neater but on the phone it's a nightmare and all it will do is stop people from checking on their phone which will probably cause a drop off in log ons.
    Ridiculous.
