    Update on Battery:

On charging to 100% the first 7% or so disappears in about 3 hours of light use (listening to audio mostly and a little messaging).

After that it settles down and i can get 2.5 or so days from it.
Wonder why it flies through the first 10%?

I'd have to check what I downloaded last time when I flashed my S6 Edge+ but I remember it was straightforward enough and worked fine - only got a security update last night in fact.

My S7 Edge arrived to the mailroom here half an hour ago so I'll have it soon, but I'm a little worried by this dead pixel issue others are having!

A HEAD UP TO ANYONE BUY THIS PHONE IN CORK ...

I went out at lunch today to Mahon point to get the S7.

I had previously(2 weeks ago) been told that I would get €95 trade in for my Sony Z3 Compact by both the Samsung ( Carphone warehouse) shop and the Vodafone store upstairs.

So today I walk into the Samsung store and ask what the price of the S7 is on the Vodafone plan, and what would I get for my phone as a trade in.

So the fellow says €299 for the phone and you could get €95 for your phone but we'll be allowing 70 as there is minor scratches on the back glass ... ( the phone has been in a case since day 1 btw).

So I says to him that I'll try the Vodafone store first before commiting.

In the Vodafone the answers to the same questions on the same plan were ... €250 for the phone and allowed for my own phone...

So in the end I ended up with the phone I wanted on the contract I wanted with an Otterbox case for less than it would have costed me to make the same change in the 'Samsung' store.

Make sure you check both places!!

Bought the official s7 edge sview case and the stupid thing doesn't stay closed. Hopefully the hinge stretches a little bit with use.

Update.. so I have my new toy here and it's niiice - although as I'm coming from an S6 Edge+ it's maybe not as impressive as I expected.

Box was marked Euro SIM only but I'm guessing it'll lock to my own when I throw the SIM into it. Trying to remember though... does it need to be unlocked before I flash it with BTU? - in which case
maybe I should do that first.

BTU = UK generic firmware. REmoves the bloatware and generally faster updates :)

Does that mean that this phone is unlocked as is then, or will it likely fix itself to whatever network the first SIM that's inserted is from?

It came from 3 and when it's powered up it shows the 3 logo.

I can flash it first and then let it pair afterwards. Reason I'm asking is I vaguely remember reading that a phone should be unlocked before generic firmware is put on it.

Cheers.. one of the main reasons I want to do it you see (aside from the bloat removal) is that 3 seem to have removed certain network options for some reason.

EG: On my S6 Edge+ their firmware wouldn't allow "2G only" which was a problem as my apartment has crap 3G/4G signal (but was resolved by installing the generic UK firmware which restored that option)

Interesting they have it done on via SIM card I think too. I have an iPhone 6s Plus sim free straight from Apple.

Was on 48, was able to get 2G only once I switched to 3 that option is now gone from settings.

Yep, but as a follow-up to the above, I have since flashed the BTU UK firmware onto the S7 and the option has been similarly restored there too. Will check later if the handset is now locked to 3 as I have a meteor SIM at home I can test.

For those that have flashed the BTU, can you please tell me what 3rd party system apps are installed by default. Basically apps that can't be removed only disabled. On the VF it's just office, dropbox, one note and drive. So not too bad.

On vodafone bill pay it's locked to vodafone. Tried other sims (meteor and 3 and would not work). However after I got the unlock code I could use any sim I liked. Same story with friends who bought this phone on Eir and Meteor. Perhaps Three is different. But I have a feeling this business of locking to your carrier only affects the US and not Ireland or UK models unless it's branded for eurosim.

Well it installed a few things like a 3 app but those can be uninstalled. Currently disabled are Facebook, Instagram, and S Health

Drive is there but I use it for backup in some apps and it has some Samsung Members app I can't get rid of but other than that it seems pretty light. The MS Office apps are installed too but I use those anyway.

Just tested with a Meteor SIM now and its working :) so this one appears to be unlocked anyway

Is the edge worth the extra few pound ?

I think so.. but then my last phones have been an S6 Edge+, Note 4, Note 3... you get the idea :)

I like the bigger screens, but to be honest I'm feeling a little underwhelmed here. My S6 Edge+ is just as good from what I can tell and this S7 Edge has already restarted once which I'm hoping is a one-off.. Nova seems to stutter occasionally too (anyone else seen that?)

Thanks. So it seems not much benefit software bloat wise going with the BTU. In fact VF don't have instagram or facebook installed and you can remove all of the vf bloat with the exception of vf notifications.

Very similar to what I got from my local Vodafone store. Went for the Red Essentials Extra plan for €40pm, and the listed price for the S7 edge was €400. Was pleasantly surprised to be told I only had to pay €300 as I was switching my number from 3. Also got a free Otterbox case, which I was buying anyway and was expecting to pay for. Very happy with the deal.

Is the edge worth the extra few pound ?

20% larger battery (3600mah v 3000mah) and 5.5 v 5.1 inch screen would be only reasons to go for the edge in my view. Though the larger screen and edge likely need the higher capacity battery so the 3000mah on the s7 is likely good enough and the same as the HTC 10 and more than the G5.

I also found the edge screen is a bit of a gimmick (never used edge contacts or apps to be honest), prone to ghost touches, and if anything has reflection and distortion problems, and a blue tinge on both edges on white backgrounds (which is typical of amoled sreens but more obvious with the edge). I'm nitpicking here though and the larger screen is certainly a benefit for many. It's a pity they didn't give us a 5.7 inch screen though.

One thing most people have not considered when they get the edge is it is difficult to get a good protective case as most manufacturers will leave the edge exposed (otherwise what's the point of having the edge). This could be fatal in a drop situation. Also there are zero decent tempered glass screen protectors. They either do not cover the edge or do cover it and don't stick properly, interfere with touch sensitivity or have a halo effect. The regular S7 has none of these issues.

If I had my way all over again I would have saved the 100 euro and got the regular S7.

You can only turn them off. I used the edge features for like 5 minutes. Then every time I wanted to ring someone or text them I forgot to use the edge contact app. LOL. Had no interest in any of the other edge apps.

Having the smaller screen I guess is a personal preference. The 5.1 inch is easier to use one handed I guess for some people. I would have liked if they made a flat 5.5 inch + screen as that blue tint which is on all edge screens (with white background) started to annoy me once someone pointed it out. Same with the reflections and the way text gets distorted on the edges. Rumors are the note 6 could be 5.9 inches :)

If you buy the S7 on 3 prepay, is it locked to the network?

Flashed generic software today you just need new version of Odin and download the software. All installation took maybe 5 minutes.
