Fast Question, When was there rise in extreme menstrual pain ? Is it documented or is it all anecdotal. I would have thought it would be no more of a problem than in the past.

It's always been there, we're just getting to the point where we don't have to put up and shut up now

No no, it's nothing like that or fear of anything, I just don't want to know is all. Some bodily functions I just don't need to know about is all, and I don't think I'd ever get to a point where I could have a chat with a woman over a coffee while we talk casually about her period. I'd just be too weirded out tbh :pac:

Genuinely I don't understand the modern need to be so open about these things. That's why I said I'd give women the rime off, to avoid the over-sharing!

You should thank your lucky stars you're not married to me!! :pac:

I know lots of men who feel like this, yet would have no trouble discussing the size, shape and regularity of their sh1tes!

Yes you do need to put up and shut up, either that or take a sick day, just like everybody else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,673 ✭✭✭AudreyHepburn

As a woman, I can't honestly say I agree with this.

Yes your time of the month can be painful and unpleasant but unless you suffered from something like Endometriosis or other serious chronic complications/illnesses as a result I don't see why you wouldn't just take a day or two of sick leave if you really need to....I had to do it on one occasion myself and there so no trouble whatsoever.

It's not some horrible disease we suffer from, it's something women have been going through since the dawn of time and it's not a reason to be mollycoddled.

I don't think we should have to 'put up and shut up'. I don't see why we can't speak openly about the fact that once a month we may feel like absolute shíte - the same as someone can talk about how they feel miserable when they have a cold. It's nothing to be ashamed of or keep secret.

'Put up and shut up' is not the same thing as 'don't pull the piss and take advantage of your employer & fellow employees'.

The 'put up and shut up' mantra is just ignorance, but at the same time, I'd say to anyone, if they're feeling like shyte, to go home and rest up, as they likely won't get a whole lot of work done that day anyway, and the last thing anyone needs in the work environment is someone who is miserable, albeit occasionally.

I really couldn't see anyone taking any more advantage of this though than those same people who already take advantage of an employers sick pay policy.

Everyone feels miserable and absolute ****e from time to time but that doesn't warrant a day off. If things are severe to the point you simply can't (genuinely) work then so be it.

I suffer a lot with my stomach with severe bloating/heaviness which absolutely drains me physically and leaves me anxious and irritable etc But I most certainly wouldn't be looking or entitled to regular days off.

As a man I have to 'man up' and 'stop whinging'... So I've to work as best I can on those days.

Who is saying that to you?

Who is telling you that regarding your chronic stomach condition you should just man up and stop whinging?

I agree that you either have to work though it, or take a sick day. I suppose it just sounded from that phrase (and the question that preceded it - whether period pain has always existed or whether its a new thing) like it should never be acknowledged or talked about, as would have been the case in generations past.

I don't see why that should be the case - there's nothing shameful about periods. It would be great if that attitude could be chucked in the dustbin of history (and I think it is being, we've come a long way).

Whats the point in saying it? You dont speak openly about having a cold, you say i have a cold and thats it, if someone was going into detail about the symptoms that were unpleasant then that would be inappropriate too.

If you are bad enough to take a sick day then take a sick day, if not then suck it up and get on with it.

Really? You've never said - 'Fuck's sake my nose won't stop running', or 'my throat is raw with coughing'? It would be pretty common in my experience. It would also be pretty common to complain about a headache or sick stomach after a night's drinking. Is that any more acceptable than saying I've got cramps or a sore back or feel sick when I've got my period? It's not like women go into graphic detail - even in women-only conversations that would be quite unusual.

In my office we have a pretty even split between men & women. If one of us has cramps we'll usually pull out a hot water bottle to ease the pain. It's no big deal. We don't talk about it at any length, but it's certainly not hidden either.

Would you feel more comfortable if we phrased it like "I've got a bad headache in my uterus"? :p

Will the army cut the extra period pay given if they are given time off?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10 pedroismyname

Seems ridiculous to me. If it hasn't ever been necessary and isn't done in most of countries then it definitely doesn't need to be introduced.

As an employee, I would be mad if someone with the same responsibilities/pay as me was getting days off.

As an employer, I would probably be put off hiring someone who might call in sick too often.

I actually wouldn't be opposed to this in the cases it was genuinely needed but if it was brought in, we all know that some people would take advantage of it so it would eventually have to be a statutory entitlement to take 2 days off (for example) every month and then it would also have to be applied to men in the name of equality (or employers would be understandably less inclined to hire women). I imagine if every worker was entitled to an extra 24 days off every year it would do pretty serious damage to our competitiveness.

Would it damage our competitiveness or would it mean that people would get paid less and/or more people would be hired?

That would seem like a reasonable alternative alright but I suspect people would object to being paid less for taking statutory time off for medical reasons.

I don't think people should be paid for period days. Absolutely not. But they should be there to take unpaid if the lady needs to use them.

It is not a secret that women are less paid for the same jobs anyway, yet it does not bother males, right?

Also usually women are those who have to sacrifice their career to raise kids - all of you who are posting here included.

Why society hates women so much???

Instead of regarding them for the role they play... And having an understanding for the issues they are facing...

I'm not included, I sacrificed my kids to build a career. I just popped them out and threw them in a creche. No kid going to stop me breaking the glass ceiling

    Well, I said - usually.

Of course there will be exemptions.

It's not possible to have children, be a stay at home mom and expect to still earn as much as you did with a job.

If you make the choice to have a child and stay home with the child, you can't fault society. It's not society that made you a parent

I'm not going to dispute what you're saying, but would love to see the back up for this? Genuinely interested.

I just saw the 'pill= no periods" comment, and even though he's getting a going over for it, it's not entirely untrue. Running packs of pills together stops periods for some women.
