That's the man. I knew him more from comedy (he's really bad at comedy btw) but heard good things about his podcast. Went from having interesting discussions about why he didn't think the moon landing was real to him pimping some supplements from a notoriously dodgy businessman. He does talk MMA when a big event or a noteworthy fight has taken place but he is very interesting breaking it down. A lot of people have turned on him in the last while. I'd still listen when he has big names or a good guest on. He's not awful but there's so much great podcasts out there that you need to time manage sometimes.

I thoroughly recommend the Joe rogan Podcasats - The joe rogan experience is the random one but he does do fight companion podcasts which take place during live UFC events he isnt commentating on - The fighter and the kid as guests have usually a bit of UFC content and obviously any fighters he has on will be ufc based but 90% of the podcasts are random. Completely random and in no way UFC.

Up and around 700 of them at 3 hrs a peice, there is some mind benders and some hilarious guests.

    My Personal recommendations are

    Graham hancock - 3 casts
    Neil DeGreese Tyson
Anything with Joey Diaz - especially the one about selling crack to whitney houston and doug stanhope is in the middle of a mushroom trip.
I also like Duncan trussell when he is on but its 90% talk about drugs if you dont mind that.
Many many others you will have to go digging.

Yeah, OP, I think you summed up the characteristics of a poor podcast. The Nerdist was recommended to me and I've tried it because it attracts quality guests - but listening to thirtysomething men trying to out-bro one another is tedious.
FWIW, my favourites are Kermode and Mayo, In Our Time and Stuff You Should Know.
But I'm noting others' recommendations here - thanks a lot!

Podcasts are a fantastic medium. I still find it a mystery why they haven't yet had a big breakthrough moment that allows them to become fully mainstream. As big and all as Serial was pods are still relatively niche; most people I know don't listen to any at all, though that number is falling all the time.

Going back to the OP: I wouldn't be put off by the experience of coming up against random musings of people talking crap. There's a danger of that in a lot of pods. The type of media it is can often draw people who are tragically fond of the sound of their own voice and some shows can consist of people just shooting their mouths off because they are, so, like utterly hilarious - American Pop Culture related shows can be chronic for this, so watch out.

There's more freedom in Podcasting and that's usually a strength, but it can also be a weakness: people can be too self-indulgent and there can be too much talk sometimes for too little organization and knowledge. There's usually a good podcast for nearly every conceivable subject under the sun, but you do have to listen first; if you can't get past the style or presenters than it may be a lost cause, no matter how much interest you may have in the subject.

As for actual recommendations. God, I wouldn't know where to start! Well, considering you started with the Empire podcast, I would recommend Filmspotting - Great show: knowledgeable hosts, interesting segments and polished and professional. The best in the business, if you ask me. I'd also vouch for The Last Picture Show - Solid film criticism and film history on that one. Overall, you won't be stuck for new film related shows to listen to. One warning though: I see a lot of people have bigged up Kermode and Mayo and it is a popular and well put together show, but I can not stand it. I listened to it for years and now the only thing that I might bother with are the actual film reviews, which are still great, but they make up a small enough portion of the show. The rest is given over to in-jokes and backslapping and it does my nut in.

I think Radiolab is a great podcast to explore, if you want to branch out into shows about science/current affairs/human interest whatever. The hosts are very likeable and the shows are always fascinating, even if they don't always initially promise to be.

Big podcast fan. Listen to them mostly in the gym.

    The MMA Hour
    Football Ramble
    Around the NFL
    Second Captains
    How Did This Get Made?

Those are my favourites by far.

The BBC4 comedy and documentary ones are good.
    All in the mind,
    The Nerdist,
    Criminal Show,
No such thing as Fish (QI team, can be a bit banterish at times)
    Freakonomics,
Stuff you missed in history class (bit American centric but interesting)
    Radiolab,
    This American Life,
    Esquire classics.

The usual football ones mentioned here but find Off the ball the best.

Trying out news ones lately so some good recommendations here. As said, some can be a bit shouty but I pick and choose episodes I'm interested in.

Used to listen to a good few podcasts when I used iTunes and an iPod. I've moved away from that for about 4 years and haven't been able to find a service that replaces this system easily. Any recommendations on Android?

Use Podcast Addict myself, find it does the job, skipping long intros or end credits and other settings.

I was about to say the same. I also was an iTunes and ipod caster, it's only when I got a decent android phone that I discovered podcast addict. It's one of those apps that does what it does perfectly, free and multifunctional.

I like the "We Hate Movies" podcast, 3 American lads choose a different terrible film each week and take the piss out of it. It can be a bit dorky at times, but its a good laugh.

The main presenter of the Empire podcast makes my skin crawl, Chris Hewitt i think it is.

Oh yeah it's fierce dorky but not really in your snarky internet dork way. I really like the kind of films they focus on, it's hardly ever obvious targets and they're best when they're tearing into films that retrospectively seem far more stupid like Twister.
A safe bet is pretty much any 90s film which you may have watched some random weekend at either 2am or 2pm.

The recent series of Hardcore History - a 6-parter on WW1, was phenomenal.

It's a big time commitment. There's the bones of 25 hours of content there. But it's quite thorough. It surely doesn't cover even a % of the war but that's a reflection on the scale of the conflict and not a criticism of the podcast.

That and Carlin's series on the Mongols are some of the greatest pieces of media of any kind I've ever consumed.

They're enthralling, massive in their scope, and while I don't have enough of a background in history to say for sure how accurate they are, the quality of the production would make me fairly confident that he's not talking through his arse.

He does another podcast - Common Sense. It's mostly a US-centric political show, but it touches on other issues from the news around the world. It has a moderate libertarian bent to it, if that makes any difference to you one way or the other.

Aside from those (including some stuff on Youtube that may as well be podcasts)...
    Football:
Football Weekly, Football Ramble, Second Captains, The Anfield Wrap

    Science:
Infinite Monkey Cage, the Naked Scientists

    Pop Culture:
Nerdist, WTF with Marc Maron, Kermode and Mayo, Red Letter Media

    Gaming + Tech:
The Crate and Crowbar, Yahtzee Crowshaw's "Drowning Out" series, the Co-Optional podcast, the WAN show with Linus Tech Tips, Super Bunnyhop, Ahoy.

It's good to have something to listen to while playing some kinds of games - strategy, MMOs and that sort of thing.

I listen to a lot of film and tech podcasts. Accidental Tech Podcast, The Talk Show, Fighting in the War Room, The Film Programme, Filmspotting, Hello Internet, The Uncomparable, and Slash Film.

My biggest complaint about podcasts is they tend to be too long. I wish more podcasts had chapters like ATP.

I listen using Overcast which has a smart speed setting that shortens silences without the chipmunk effect. Easily the best podcast available for that feature alone, although other apps have started copying it.

Cheers mate I'm liking FilmSpotting, subscribed! They seem to have a massive following on their forum too. I'm not the biggest fan of Kermode but I do enjoy his reviews, and I think I'll stick to the youtube uploads of them, rather than the full show.

Giving Radiolab a listen now too. One of the biggest problems (for me) with podcasts is that they are so long. I don't often have 1.5hrs to sit and listen to something on a daily basis. Shorter the better IMO.

I find with apps I could download 3 or 4 and spend a day or two messing about with them, with no real affect. Podcast Addict just works and has loads of settings anyway, general and for each podcast. It plays radio as well, though a bit buggy for me.

Now if there was a polished rss/news reader, podcasts and radio all in one, I'd be set.

I've only in recent times started listening to podcasts.

The one I listen to religiously is Distraction Pieces by Scroobius Pip. He's a British rapper but it's not about rap music. There are a few guests that are rappers but the discussion varies. He also gets alot of actors and has had 1 wrestler on it.

I also dabble in the Joe Rogan Experience, I'm being more selective about what ones I listen to rather than listening to it all. But there are lots of interesting guests and topics there to choose from.

Serial has been grand this year, but the first season was great.

I also list to the Rogglecast which has now been wrapped up, that was by a music producer called Blockhead and his friend that talked about a range of stuff, mainly the sh*t that goes on living in New York.

Juan Ep is a hip hop one that I listen to as well.

There are lots more I want to listen to, but time is a problem :D

I agree. No real mystery or suspense in it this year

I find it hard to work and listen! I'm either concentrating on one or the other. Tend to just go for walks or listen in the car to them.

I used to like the football ramble but now it's a few lads having the bantz, looking down on others having the bantz.

Reveal is good but a bit American centric.
    Transistor.
More or less from BBC4 is good for drilling into those stats you hear from politicians and journalists.
    Sporting Witness for sports nerds!
