Is it too late to chip in with some anti religious diatribe? I can quote Hawkins too and provide youtube links to Hitchens? It will help spread the hatred festering here towards religions which for sure will help us find a solution to these problems

Oh yes we mustn't criticise religions because that only makes the problem worse. Like we are doing great already not criticising them.

For every terrorist atrocity like this, groups like IS win over new recruits eager to do a copycat. They also win over thousands of new western apologists who try to pin the blame on everyone and everything except the perpetrators and their religion.

All these suicide bombers come from one religion, Islam. No other.

At what stage do we call a spade a spade and say this is a murderous death cult which has no place in modern Europe?

    In Europe?

If you want to get into how much blood is on the hands of Christians in Europe then I really don't have the time.

What about the whole bosnian genocide perpetrated by Christians?

Oh God (or Allah if you prefer), could we please stop with the whata-****in-boutery! It's tiring. It's tedious. It's been done to death. There is a philosophy and religious forum if you wish to discuss atrocities carried out by Christians. This is a thread about bombings in Brussels.

I'd quite rather he bottled it than kill a few more!

Is he a coward for not carrying out a terrorist act?

Sky news are reporting that ISIS have claimed responsibility.

I have no intention of being dragged into the 100 billionth online religious debate, I do accept take your points but from my perspective its lunatics who kill people not religions. Just as I don't speak for everyone here neither do these animals speak on behalf of a religion
    Cheers

That said, if he did bottle it, it will be a case of 'Off with his head!'.

They're also picking a fight with an imaginary 'christian empire' if that's what they're doing.

The majority of Europe, especially Northern Europe, at this stage is most definitely post-enlightment, post-religious and highly secular. A majority (well over 64%) in Belgium and a lot higher again in France simply don't really consider themselves religious at all and for them it has no importance in life.

Most of Europe is *very* different from the USA when it comes to those kinds of attitudes. So, just lumping "The west" into one big bundle makes absolutely no sense.

They're really getting into picking fights with windmills territory and just frightening people and whipping up a European secular far right which is not a religious force, but it's a highly xenophobic one with an extremely nasty history and one I wouldn't want to be encouraging!!

"Islamic State fighters carried out a series of bombings with explosive belts and devices on Tuesday, targeting an airport and a central metro station in the center of the Belgian capital Brussels," AMAQ agency said.

The UK and Germany really need to be on high alert as well, The possibility of an attack in those two countries is really high.

Yeah, why didn't he go through with and kill more people, the coward!

    Seriously. WTF?

The number of IS recruits who've been bottling it and defecting has been increasing in recent months. This is a good thing, it indicates that their pool of candidates is narrowing and they're more reliant on people who are terrified and desperate then focussed and devout.

It was certainly a shock, and a surprise, and a shock to me. I didn't think they would be in to that sort of thing.

As far as I am aware at the height of the terrorist campaigns in Northern Ireland, it was fairly standard in Dublin Airport and elsewhere to be scanned with a hand-held metal detector at the door.

I'm not old enough to remember, but I know I read it somewhere.

It wouldn't be THAT difficult to implement large scale baggage scanning at doors. They do it in major Spanish railway stations and the X-ray machine are fast and big enough to process everything without much fuss at all. They're maybe 2 or 3X bigger than a standard machine.

So you think the US government and the EU are going in there just trying to do the right thing?

Again I never mentioned the US nor the EU for that matter.
Even if that were true, it's none of our business. We are not the world police. We won't and will never be thanked for it. Today is our thank you.

Unfortunately being a good human is a thankless task.
I imagine if members of your family were caught up in this kind of thing you'd change your tune about who's life is more important. It's irresponsible to put others ahead of your own family.

It's also irresponsible to let evil occur and do nothing about it.

Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and all other European countries who refuse to take Muslim immigrants or don't have local Muslim population. Isn't it easy?

Japan as well, they don't allow muslim Immigrants in and if they do very strict rules, no mosques allowed in Japan.

It does rather beg the question, what the hell is the point of additional forces on the ground.

Ack the leftist atheist who likes attacking de church in 2015 but won't attack a much more dangerous religion.

I'll attack the church on any year, last year, this year, or even next year. I can't say I'd shed any tears if religion, all religion including Islam, was banned in Ireland tomorrow. But that's not a reasonable point of view, it's never going to happen in our life time anyway.

Catholicism has destroyed far more lives in this country than any other religion ever will, that's an indisputable fact.

I'm all for cutting down on hate speech and it needs to be applied across the board. For some of the posts that had to be deleted today in this thread, perhaps an automatic one year in prison, minimum.
