A 'proper' car. The worst thing about car enthusiasts is their belief that one car is more 'proper' than another. Imagine someone who owns a Zanussi washing machine boasting about how it's more 'proper' than someone else's Whirlpool.

"Call that a washing machine? Now, this is a washing machine... 1600 spin-speed."

Ray, haven't you posted on Boards about watching Top Gear? The programme for car enthusiasts?

I use my toothbrush twice every day, much like how i use my car usually twice a day. They are both just tools solely designed for a particular purpose.

What kind of a sad case would i have to be to be to start modifying my toothbrush and spending hours my spare time reading about toothbrushes or watching TV shows about toothbrushes?

Car enthusiasts are just silly. You may as well be a toilet enthusiast.

People are different and have different interests. Shocker!

Top Gear is an entertainment programme dressed up as a car programme though.

I watch it from time to time and I drive a 16 year old Corolla. :)

Failing to wear a seatbelt is insane.

Seatbelts are incredibly useful in a crash. Not just becase they stop you being catapulted into being a vegetable for life, but because they do what plenty of people who wear seatbelts fail to do; tighten the damned seatbelt! There's a small pyro charge in the seatbelt that fires when the sensors detect a collision. This charge drives a piston that tightens the belt incredibly tight so that you effectively become part of the seat. The airbag fires a few milliseconds later to absorb the significant remaining forward motion of the seat/occupant combination while the steering wheel and pedals are retracting to prevent you being horribly impaled. All this is occurring while the front of your car is crumpling at a predetermined rate, further absorbing the crash energy.

    Engineering is fantastic.

Engineering sure is fantastic, but the human body has not evolved to the same degree of safety yet unfortunately.
You can have all the safety bells and whistles in your car, but if you're going to fast and you crash, your internal organs are going to suffer.
this seems to be something those in bigger, fast cars seem to forget and think they are invincible.
this ad is years old, but still so valid:

Ah but your not banging on about how all cars are the same, blah blah.

I'd love to know if they intend going to their own wedding in a Dacia Logan or some other piece of sh1t! :pac:

Yeah sure having better brakes so stopping faster, better handling, being faster to react to sudden dangers and easier to keep control etc don't make any difference. Having more power also makes overtaking far far safer and more comfortable, makes getting out at junctions safer, gives you more control in a dangerous situation as maybe instead of breaking you can speed up to avoid a situation etc.

I suppose there is no difference between tyres either....

The washing machine comparison is nonsensical.

I drive a perfectly average car, and I've never had any problem stopping, getting out at junctions or overtaking. This rhetoric about needing great handling and lots of power makes me laugh. You're driving on public roads, not a Formula One track.
I have a car that you sink into the seat when you accelerate, that loves to be thrown into corners (which is all perfectly safe I might add).

I resent having to share the roads with people who like 'throwing' their car into corners.

I used to watch it from time to time, if there was nothing else on, but the vast majority of my posts about Top Gear aren't that positive (mostly because of the racism, not the cars).

Yes, people who think cars are just a thing for getting from A to B and don't take any pride in what they drive.

Nope. Cars are literally a machine for getting you from A to B. That is literally the entire point of their existence.

Cars are for getting in, going somewhere and then getting out of and not thinking about until you need to get in them again.

Having "pride" in your car is tragic. You didn't build the thing with your own ****ing hands for Christ sake. You bought a thing made by a multinational corporation to use it for its sole intended purpose.

A lot of performance cars are built or at least tuned/tweeked by the owner, how would you like someone commenting about how crap your hard work on your home for example is?? You have your opinion and others their own so please stop trying to belittle others with your "opinion"

So you continued to watch it despite being offended at the "racism"...

I'd give up trying to reason with this one lads, can't argue with stupid.

    Banned.

Say that to the Motor forum.

i like useful things on a car - low profile tyres are good, better grip. ABS braking good and that traction control thing. anything that helps the suspension that helps the car stick to the road, especially round corners and stops the car from rolling over is good. Some of these fancy LED lights are good because they improve visibility for the driver and other road users - but a lot of the other custom moddings are unnecessary for safety I think, nice if you want the car to look different and stand out but some people go right over the top, dont know when to stop and then end up looking ridiculous sometimes

How did high performance cars even end up in this debate? The age group in question can't afford them/get insured on them regardless.

Half of em aint even tall enough to look over the steering wheel ... and dont get me on those baseball caps and tracksuits they wear whilst driving these super duper cars :D

Why dramatic? I class dramatic as people tarring all with one brush.. I'm no boy racer and I see first hand the carnage at accidents but I'm still into my high performance cars and spend quite a lot of money and effort on them does this mean I'm an idiot, no it simply means I take pride in my possessions.. I respect yours and the other posters opinions but I think a lot of people will disagree with some..

I think all young drivers up to age 21 should only be able to drive up to 1ltr or 1,1ltr unmodified 'normal' motor cars ... mind you saying that , they can just do just as much damage in a 1ltr corsa as a 2ltr beamer I suppose ... I know give em bicycles until they are 21 :)

Most people dying are not in performance cars. People who put the time and money into performance cars are not dogging them around back roads late at night.

You'll find its the typical young lads cars, Boras, Golfs etc that are crashed most often. Not performance cars.

A 1 litre car at 140kph is a lot more dangerous/difficult to stop than a proper 2L car at the same speed as by and large the 2L version will have larger brakes and be built for that speed???

    Or am I missing something

Andy I agree with you about certain young people and there driving don't get me wrong, the best place for them is on a bicycle, we are probrably even on about the same people.. But I also know a lot of younger people who drive modified and performance cars who are responsible and do it for the pride in their car, I just don't like all young people being branded for the sins of a few..

Vast amounts of American 16 yr olds started out driving in 5 litre V8s with leaf spring suspension. They seem to get on just fine.

Lol this post reminds me of today as I was walking down to meet my friend. This car starts sounding its horn like crazy way behind me, and kept sounding it til it drove past.

The car in question was a 94 micra with so many young lads in the car the back of it was practically on the road, with a ****ty spoiler on it.

God I wish I was as cool as them
