There are very very few young and inexperienced drivers driving actual performance cars as they can barely insure a small underpower city car never mind anything remotely interesting. P.

I must say, when I see young drivers barely out of secondary school driving around in heavily modded cars I'm like "how the feck can they afford insurance on that!" ... Then the other voice in my head says "they are most probably not insured!" Lol. Or borrowed or nicked the car haha. No, when I see older people own a modded car I just think "they must have a good job to pay the insurance on that" :D

When I see an older person in a modified car I think "wow. Now I just feel bad for you".

Please, cars are a hobby and a toy for many people.

Hey, guess what... the roads aren't a playground for man-children and their obnoxious toys.
How bloody boring would it be if we didn't have nice cars to drive around in and have a bit of fun.

Is there anything... anything more boring than adults who think cars should be 'fun'?

Yes, people who think cars are just a thing for getting from A to B and don't take any pride in what they drive.

You obviously have never had the pleasure of driving a proper car.

People are into different things, lots of people are into cars I'm sure what ever you are into plenty of people would find very boring. You will find that proper performance cars are far safer than the crap most people drive also.

A 'proper' car. The worst thing about car enthusiasts is their belief that one car is more 'proper' than another. Imagine someone who owns a Zanussi washing machine boasting about how it's more 'proper' than someone else's Whirlpool.

"Call that a washing machine? Now, this is a washing machine... 1600 spin-speed."

I have no issue saying here that I drove like an absolute tw*t when I was younger. Type of car made no difference - did it in everything from Ford Fiestas to Celicas to S2000's. The car and the power available make no difference - an idiot driver is an idiot driver, whether it be a Micra or a Evo. Lucky to have not killed myself or anyone else during that time.

Because of now being a bit older (only 31 as yet!) and a lot calmer behind the wheel, I realise how utterly stupid some of the stuff I did was. When I hear about these kind of accidents now, I automatically think that they were either acting the bollocks and not concetrating, or that they fell asleep. Guess my own experiences have jaded my opinions on them.

Funnily enough, drink driving doesn't occur to me with younger generation, but would occur with the older generation.

I have to say, I've known people get into their car after 8 or 9 pints and drive home - and none of them have been under 40 years old. I don't know anyone around my age (late teens-early 20s) who'd ever dream of driving after even 2 pints.

Just wondering why people are not tying up drinking and driving with young people. We all know they love a good drink, and binge drinking and that a lot of them cannot handle their drink and end up doing stupid things so why are people not adding up young people with drink driving? Seems these days a lot (not all) cannot have a good night out unless there is any drink (and some of them drugs most probably) at a venue. I know what I'm talking about I'm a father of a just out of teenage daughter!....

Yeah sure having better brakes so stopping faster, better handling, being faster to react to sudden dangers and easier to keep control etc don't make any difference. Having more power also makes overtaking far far safer and more comfortable, makes getting out at junctions safer, gives you more control in a dangerous situation as maybe instead of breaking you can speed up to avoid a situation etc.

I suppose there is no difference between tyres either....

The washing machine comparison is nonsensical.

Their cars probably aren't high performance. They are probably only small cars, maybe 1 litre or so but have a body kit and a few stickers. Hardly a performance enhancing modification.

It's the attitude of the driver that causes the accidents.

I have more pride in my appearance. My car would be kept clean and washed and tidy but I wouldn't see the need to have it lowered or have a noisey exaust welded on

In general drink driving is far more of a taboo with younger people than older people. They might do a lot of stupid things when drunk, but driving isn't as likely to be one of them as it would have been in years gone by - it's just not socially acceptable.

It's a really positive sign that the message about drink driving is getting through - at least to people who were young enough not to remember a time when drink driving was acceptable.

You're confusing people who are actually into and own performance cars and high spec cars, with the boy racers who have (generally) sh*t cars and feel the need to lower them and stick big exhausts on them to make the look like "performance" cars.

Massive difference between those and actual car enthusiasts. (I would consider myself the latter and would be massively insulted to be called a "boy racer" :D )

In a single car collision? yes, generally but then theres also accidents that arent accidents

If you drive a 'high performance' car on a public road you are still a little boy racer.

no, I dont believe that for one moment - I dont believe the bit as well about them thinking it not being socially acceptable, if anything I would say the younger people would have more of a pressure to have a drink with their mates - plus the invincibility with young adults these days means that they think accidents happen to other people not them, and that other people get caught for drink driving, not them so it makes them even more likely to 'try and get away with it'

I cant understand people shelling out hundreds for a Big Bore exhaust when all you got to do is cut your back silencer box of any ol car and get the same sound that way :D

Yes, people who think cars are just a thing for getting from A to B and don't take any pride in what they drive.

Nope. Cars are literally a machine for getting you from A to B. That is literally the entire point of their existence.

Cars are for getting in, going somewhere and then getting out of and not thinking about until you need to get in them again.

Having "pride" in your car is tragic. You didn't build the thing with your own ****ing hands for Christ sake. You bought a thing made by a multinational corporation to use it for its sole intended purpose.

As a young driver myself (19) I can say from my experience drink driving is just not socially acceptable among my peers. The message against drink driving has been hammered into young people since childhood. It's unseen whenever I go out, taxis all the way. Of course theres always exceptions to the rule, but I'd say the rates of drink driving among young drivers have decreased substantially in recent years.

I'd nearly go as far as to say adults are more likely to drive over the limit. There's no way my friends or I would go near our cars after even one drink due to the heavy restrictions on new drivers (pretty much zero alcohol allowed in your bloodstream for N drivers) but the likelihood of an adult chancing it home in the car after a few pints is high. I see it at family gatherings and at work regularly.

Adding just a back box to a normal car I'd agree with you somewhat though I don't have an issue with people who want to (plus a cut silencer will not pass the nct).

However adding a straight pipe with de-cat or uprated cat to a proper modified car makes a significant performance difference, the sound while part if the experience is just a result have having much better flow of exhaust gasses by having less restrictive exhaust system. I'm considering adding an uprated exhaust system to my own car, partly to get more of a rumble out of it under acceleration but also to enhance performance. Proper systems are pricey though nothing like the cheap back boxes you see for sale in motor factors.

I very much enjoy the experience of driving though. I have a car that you sink into the seat when you accelerate, that loves to be thrown into corners (which is all perfectly safe I might add). I like it to look well the same as I'm sure you want your new jacket to look well etc etc.

To many people cars are far more than boxes for getting from A to B.

Well, they are free to think it is more than a box for getting from A to B but it is literally just a box for getting from A to B.

By this logic a house is just a place to shelter from the rain so why bother having a nice comfortable one with the mod cons that you want.

We should all just live in sheds, they will keep us dry after all and isn't that the point.

Cars are a hobby for an awful lot of people, they enjoy driving them, cleaning them, reading about them, watching tv shows about them etc etc etc

I have no interest in cars, but I don't see how someone who's into cars is any different to someone who likes fashion, or has a huge record/movie collection, or a large TV, a fortune's worth of gym equipment...

If it gives you pleasure (and you drive responsibly), whats the issue?

Anyway, this thread has moved from topic, so how's about we all agree to move on and get back to the ops points, m'kay?

I use my toothbrush twice every day, much like how i use my car usually twice a day. They are both just tools solely designed for a particular purpose.

What kind of a sad case would i have to be to be to start modifying my toothbrush and spending hours my spare time reading about toothbrushes or watching TV shows about toothbrushes?

Car enthusiasts are just silly. You may as well be a toilet enthusiast.
