Hi there. I am using a C7 just plugged into the TC7200 (not bridged). Most times I am downloading (usually in the evening) the internet drops. Do you reckon that if I attempted to bridge it would solve that problem?

If you are using uTorrent it can use UPNP to open ports on the C7 but they remain blocked on the TC7200. It's impossible to troubleshoot issues with double Nat but internet drops is not a typical symptom. Are you sure you're not maxing the upload? This would do as you describe as if you use all your upstream bandwidth you will struggle to browse.

How can I tell if I am using all my upstream? When using utorrent I only have one download open at any time, i.e., I delete seeding files before I start to download.

While you're downloading you can also be uploading, you will be able to see the speed and the number of connections. You should be configuring uTorrent so it's limiting the upload to suit your connection.

Depending on your client that could still be 200 outbound connections. If you download from a website its Site<-->You. With a torrent its Many<-->You, even on a single torrent file.

Set an upstream limit or 20kbps and see how you get on.

    Two questions:

Do you know if Virgin is STILL using the slow-wi-fi modem now?
Could I just subscribe to the 360mb/s and then downgrade for (I think it was) 10 euro to the 240 and would I keep the better modem in that case?

I am on the 240Mbps contract using the Technicolor 7200.U modem supplied by VIRGIN and can achieve 240Mbps with my Dell XPS PC which has Gigabite Ethernet when connected directly via Ethernet cable to the modem.

All of my other devices (which have 100Mbps Ethernet) including laptops and my new MINIX X6 streaming box, can only achieve 30Mbps directly connected via Ethernet cable to the TC 7200.U modem.

Do any of you have this problem? Any Solutions?

That was an issue with the Ubee, sure you dont have that?

ED, mine is the Technicolor 7200.U

Strange. I don't keep super tight tabs on the units I don't use myself but it would be strange that both units from different OEMs have the same 10/100 negotiation bug. Unless the embedded switch is an off the shelf part.

Ed, both the original unit that VM couriered to me and the second one that the VM tech installed were TC 7200.U.

Also the VM tech did a very thorough test on my cabling and said it was perfect, I installed it my self ith top quality Comcast RG6 cable from the VM splitter on the roof eves to the TC 7200.U so I know it was installed properly.

I'm not saying either you did it wrong OR it wasnt that unit. The ubee is known to have that fault (VM acknowledged it) and you've clearly demonstrated the same behavior with the TC. Just unusual to see it from two OEMs.

Well in the end I'll be chancing the 240 connection and I'll find myself buying a router if the wifi works like crap.

btw do they install the modem in the room you want or the one that is most convenient to them? I have an old UPC box connection in the most useless room of the house if they install it there I might find myself having to buy plugs

If all the taps are active (depends from house to house) then you can place it on any of them.

If its the only one then that is where they'll fit it (or you will, its often just delivered by a courier).

I wouldn't have any confidence in the VM tech. All of the ones I've dealt with were very poor. Just rushing to get out the door and leaving chaos behind them.

Oh. In that case I should probably get ready to buy plugs... so that's what they mean with "self install"? Here's the modem, have a good day?

What are "taps"? I know there is some kind of a box in the wall with "UPC" written on it on the top floor in a little room.. is that a tap? I don't even know if this house has a telephone something somewhere... there is a random cable coming out of the wall at ground foor as well, wonder if that is fiber too or phone...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

None of its fiber. Virgin/UPC/NTL comes in over co-ax cable, that box you describe will have two connectors on the bottom you can use.

    P0001_310710.jpg

Any units like that are for use with Virgin, a phone cable will be much thinner with a transparent head on it, that might be the random cable you found.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 131 ✭✭stillalive88

There are three cables. They are kind of thick and one looks like a coaxial. The other ones... might be coaxial females? Can't tell.
Maybe I am in luck????? Maybe the previous people made some artisan cable that went downstairs???
Or it could they be antenna tv cables?

Yes the box looks exactly as you have shown. It seems to be connected to nothing, just has two females there, one with some kind of a screw on top of it to keep it closed (easily unscrewed now and put back on).

Lads I installed the C8 today and am getting down speeds of 225. The only problem is when I type in 192.168.0.1 to turn off the wifi in the UPC router it doesn't load the webpage. Do I have to go to a different page now since it's virgin media? Thanks.

    Try 192.168.100.1 instead.

Thanks for that. It allowed me to disable 5GHz but when I tried to disable 2.4Ghz it said "Can not disable radio while you use WIFI roaming opt-in."

Did anyone else have this issue?

    Is that Wi-Free I wonder?

You have to disable Wifree in your virgin account panel then wait 48hrs before it will allow you disable the radio.

First of all great guide/thread, after reading though the 34 pages, I still have a few questions.

I have a archer C8 arriving in the next few days so just trying to figure out the best way to set it up.

Currently using the technicolor tc7200 modem, sharing my apartment with 5 others so I'd rather not brick the box trying to manually set it to bridge mode. It appears my box is using exclusively ipv6 as I have no NAT or dmz options, I just want to create a "psudo-bridge" do I just give my C8 a static IP, turn off wireless, turn off the modem firewall and dhcp? Want to make sure I eliminate any chance of "double-natting".

    Thanks for the help lads.

"Psuedo-bridge" is double NAT. So you'd have to bridge to avoid it. If you're on DS-Lite you'll have to get it disabled and even then, you may not be able to bridge the TC7200. Depends on the firmware version.

What would the effects of a double Nat be for a normal user? Web browsing and a small bit of streaming.

None, it only affects gaming, Skype, remote desktop or things that depend on an inbound connection getting to a device inside your private network

So I would never be able to use Skype?

It's not the best setup for Skype but Skype is very smart software, it can adapt and use a server node which both you and your caller connect to. This means you will never get an end to end direct connection from you to the other party, this adds latency to the connection which could affect the quality.

I have UPC 240MB using Technicolor TC7200 modem/router, i had the same issue as not getting download speed more than 40MB over wifi. I followed this thread and bought TP Link Archer C2 and followed the steps in thread to setup both router few months ago and was happy by using 2.4GHz and 5GHz with good speed of 70-80MB over wifi.

UPC router IP address 192.168.0.1 - WIFI turned off

    Archer IP address 192.168.1.1

Archer Getting IP address from UPC e.g 192.168.0.5
    GW : 192.168.0.1

Connected LAN cable from UPC modem to Internet port of Arhcer - Assigned IP LAN range 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.200 with DHCP "ON" and all phones and computers were connected through Archer and was assigning IP addresses from Archer.
Recently I bought Wifi printer and unable to print via wifi and unable to ping one pc to other PC in ip range of 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.200

Currently turned off Archer and Turn on wifi of UPc modem, PCs are assigned IP addresses from 102.168.0.X range and able to print over wifi and also able to ping pc to pc.

Please advise where am I doing wrong?
