there would have been more bloodshed if only the extremists on each side had guns and there was no police / army to keep civil order. There would have been even more Northern Bank roberies, unrest etc.

Here in the Republic our security services had to defend against many PIRA / INLA bank robberies, kidnappings etc too.
Do you honestly still believe the British army came to keep the peace/civil order...

God love ya....even the most hardened unionists don't attempt to pass off that lie anymore
If this was the case why would they open fire on a civil rights march??

Talk about US corporate "getting your retaliation in early".

They were welcomed with cups of tea and sandwiches by many Catholics when they arrived.

Maybe instead of going to the White house he could go on a bird watching holiday with 3 of his comrades to Columbia next time? The yanks would like that.

One of the main drivers of the murdering that came before the peace process as well dont forget that as I and many others wont! Him and the loyalists were as blood thirsty and pathetic as each other.

Yes and people who can't move on from the good friday agreement and are determined to keep the bitterness alive can all jump in the same sack.

Surely Ms. Mc donald and Mr Mc Guinness would have been stopped too?

Adams has history and US boys have info on it and asked him questions which he didn't like and walked out.

Previously he "precleared" security, but probably just thought it wasn't needed again. Tough luck, USA treats every trip as a separate trip and if your name is flagged as being involved in terrorism, then you need to answer questions.

Or maybe, like his frienda, he thinks the law shouldn't apply to him.

Not only did he preclear security but .... "anyone attending the event is known to have been screened by the FBI and Secret Service before being issued with the official invite."

...and they wouldn't even let us have a look in to the flights of rendition , not that we'd ask!

No comparison with south Africa. In the 1980's, the PIRA was'nt looking for equality for Catholics, there was that already. NI was not south Africa but yet the PIRA bombing and murder campaign went on.

Bitterness? Check out the SF/DUP family fued up north.
There's moving on and then there is remembering those that had family murdered and got off scot free and now hold positions of power gained through their crimes. SF/DUP and the other nutters should jump in that sack you mentioned.

Just read this in the IC. Has there been an apology? I don't think it's been covered by the Irish media. I guess some jobsworth chinless wonder got his jollies from it.
Does everyone agree that he should not have been stopped entering?

He wasn't refused entry. Some officials questioned King Gerry, which he does not like at all, so he left in a huff. Classic case of SF trying to drum up a little "victim" attention for themselves, given that FF and FG are getting all the media attention. I hope he enjoyed his free holiday in the USA at the expense of the Irish tax payer!!

No we're discussing the inclusion of terrorists at diplomatic functions. Hence why I mentioned Mandela. :)

Obama is also a terrorist if you include drone strikes

This happened before years ago if I'm not mistaken.

Probably not the best idea going to America when you're the ex spokesperson for a terrorist organisation.

Doesn't stop you though if you're the leader of a theocratic authoritarian regime that has one of the worst human rights abuses in the world though...

The United States has a history of inviting terrorists over

and here's Obama with Yahya Jammeh, who's been dictator of Gambia for the last 20 years.

100% untrue. These flights were funded by the tax payer. Also, they sit in business class. I have sat beside front bench members from SF on US bound flights before.

Not at all. Mary Lou and McGuinness were not stopped. Putting Gerry's alleged terrorist connections to one side, you also have to remember that he has flirted with the legal system in the UK recently too. His celebrity status got him passed pre-clearance in Dublin but the officials pulled him aside stateside and he didn't like it one bit. He must think that he is untouchable.

    LOL at old whataboutery chestnut

    There is NO comparison.

There was no democracy in SA so there weren't the options that were available here.

Mandela was imprisoned for strikes and leaving the country without permission. Neither was illegal here or in the UK.

Later there was sabotage but done to avoid death or injury. Nothing like the deliberate targeting of civilians or the enforced suicide of proxy bombs here.

What? Sure they're all living ''on the average industrial wage'' ;)

Maybe Gerry was wearing Shergars teeth again

He's had a few problems gaining entry with these over the years

The Americans have a massive hard on for Edna Kenny at the moment and anyone that might get in the way of the blueshirts getting into power again will be stopped and questioned.
