Some unionists are motivated by their hatred of anything that could be considered of "them'uns" - it's a type of anti-culture.

Willie Frazer was recently trying to organise a protest at the airport in Belfast because it was selling 'Irish' paraphernalia (probably made in China).

    Yeah it was a pensioner.
Ahh mr. Frazer... The pure definition of a Cnut.

Great post. You only have to spend a few hours in the Londonderry suburbs of Creggan Heights or Ballymagroarty to realise that it's just one side that get all tetchy and petty about how things are named. :)
Yes, you could also go to Culmore and get equally tetchy people.

I don't see any Nationalist mayors wetting their underpants over say, Ulster Scots signage.

To be fair to Jim Allister, and this is hopefully the only time I'll ever be defending him, he wouldn't be in the same league as Oor Willie. Allister is looking to bolster his support from curtain twitching, garden fete running, soda farl baking Presbyterian grannies. Frazer is a headcase.

No, many are good, honest and respectful people. Their politicians on the other hand... a lot of the things they do and/or say can be merely posturing to the gallery; in other cases they are merely just expressing their sincere bigoted beliefs - it usually just depends on the individual.

We're not all f*cking nutbag loony bigots. Unfortunately they're the noisiest and get the most attention though.

But yeah, for a town that has had it's fair share of employment catastrophes, this isn't exactly something any councillor in that town should be shouting about.

It's the age old problem up here.

Rather than actually sort out the mess and come up with some solutions to make the north a better a place its:

"DEFLECT! DEFLECT! LOOK AT THON MANHOLE COVER WITH THEIR FOREIGN WORDINGS AND SUCH! VOTE FOR US AND KEEP THEMUNS OUT!"

There's only one policy by the likes of the TUV and that's to keep divisions in place.

The rest of us sigh, keep our heads down and hope our job is secure for another month at least. Because not one of our 'representatives' gives a sh*t unless their own personal agenda is being fulfilled.

Yea it's the TUV, hardly representative of unionism given their single MLA and only 13 councillors across the entire of NI.

Jim Allister is a more intelligent, articulate version of Willie. Same league? Definitely. Jim just has a bit more cop on.

Sinn Fein wet their pants when a "Welcome to Northern Ireland" sign was erected at the border in 2012.

Willie Frazer is a nutjob, but yes they're two cheeks of the same arse.

They're basically made up of DUP deflectors who are the largest party in NI, so apart from a few policy differences they're essentially the same dinosaurs, just with a different roar.

Aye. Imagine being opposed to wasting public money.

    Nah they're not really.

The DUP are a bunch of w@nkers (I can fully get behind that idea), but Allister's lost are a different breed entirely. I think there is a subset of the DUP (their bible bashing brigade) that could definitely be described as TUV-lite and I am sure they would have defected only for party loyalty but the DUP as a whole actually is more moderate (to an extent).

On Twitter the party’s Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA Phil Flanagan protested: “People in this area don't want the signs, even if they cost nothing.”

NI is full of nutters. It's a wee goldfish bowl.

Well I agree there are some moderates in the DUP, and some more extreme elements in the TUV, generally speaking I'd view them all as being much the same. Gregory Campbell for example wouldn't look out of place beside Sunny Jim.

Yea Campbell is a complete tool.

I usually feel I have to comment when the Sinn Féin people start on about things, but in this case I feel obliged to tell the Unionists to f*** off.

Also very funny whenever you hear a SF person on the radio trying to avoid at all costs saying "Northern Ireland"

I maybe wrong on this but didn't SF replace all the hospital signs with bilingual signs when they had the health ministry and then later they were all replaced again when the DUP had the health ministry. They have a rich government up there.

SF has it's own morons that goes without saying. They pale into insignificance though when compared to their Unionist counterparts.

So far, is it 1 Councillor?

It hardly seems to be some big issue amongst the Unionist masses!

LAD have put together some quality stuff on the TUV. They have a video of Jolene Bunting attempting to speak English thats pretty funny.

I don't think that happened. It may have been NHS literature or something like that.

It's one councillor here. Last week it was an MP caught on record seemingly agreeing with the racist sentiments of one of his constituents. A month or so back it was a whole (unionist) council blocking a new leisure centre (free!) for a nationalist town.

Ok on the face of it, it's Ballymena, it's the type of them up there so it's not to be unexpected that they might kick up a fuss. But there'll be something in a week or two... then something else the week after that...

Are they demanding the uisce be removed from under the manhole too, just in case?

Maybe they should demand that the water supply be voice-activated so that every time someone turns on the tap they must say "water" in English.

    /sarcasm

Cue a drought in NI as the voice activation doesn't understand the Belfast accent! :pac:

Probably to the get the contract for their mates. The expenses and tenders scandal in Stormont is off the scale...

It's all agua to me, and should be for certain Unionists too.

Unfortunately this is common behaviour from Unionists. The slightest display of anything Irish will offend them. The TUV are a particularly sinister collection of bigots. The fact that they don't form part of the government means they can display their bigotry more openly, unlike the DUP who have had to tone down their hatred of all things Irish due to being partners in government with SF - although that hasn't stopped them engaging in the odd xenophobic/bigoted/sectarian slip now and again. Outsiders have a lazy analysis that both sides are as bad as each other, believe me they're not.

I know, I see last week these unionists put a bomb under a prison officers car badly injuring him, after it went off in a residential area of east Belfast.

    Ohh wait. That was republicans......

Nice attempt at deflection though :)
