Anyone pissed off with Kavanagh saying "full recovery" to Conor after round 1 when he was clearly gassed a little? Reminds me of Ronda's idiotic coach saying she was fighting beautifully even though she was getting the face minced off her by Holly. As a guy who's fought a little, I want my corner to be honest with me between rounds and be blunt. Kavanagh should have told Conor to bide his time and smartly box Nate and not pour it on looking for the finish.

    That's bang out of order!

We didn't see the full corner speech. He's hardly going to go "jasus you're lookin awful tired there, pity you're so wrecked".

Yeah agreed, it'll be interesting to see how he copes with this.

I'm not sure what walk around weight is but it surely isn't near 170 seeing as he has been bulking for months.

I thought he had mentioned a walk around weight of Just Over 170 in the past But That Depends On bf% Etc I Suppose. He's in no way a ww under the current cutting rules anyway. Hopefully he reinvents himself as a more likeable character but keep the wit.

Yeah your right that was a bit strong,i'll retract that, just bugs me big time that he took such an unnecessary risk and Kavanagh surely played his part in this stupidity. He didn't need to take this fight against someone longer and bigger at 170 just really amateurish stuff.

Well he most certainly shouldn't be saying "full recovery" and encouraging him to land the haymaker right uppercut when it was clear Conor was breathing heavily. Boxers are constantly instructed to take rounds off by their corner...Kavanagh should have told McGregor to stop being so aggressive and try and pick Nate off coming in instead of playing up to Nate's type of fight by trading.

Very true. Conor is a pot shotter type fighter. Not a high octane active fighter.

Possibly chasing his own prophecy of a first round finish but gassing after 1 medium paced round is poor. He was walking around most of the first. Very little movement or footwork going on.

Looked plodding and sluggish. Compared to the Aldo fight when he was bouncing around on the balls of his feet. Albeit it only lasted 13 seconds.

The criticism of Kavanagh is very bizarre to me. It seems some people think he has a video game controller at his disposal with the ability to make decisions for Conor as well as control him in the octagon.

anyone criticizing Conor needs to be banned he may have lost but he is the best thing to ever happen to mma in many ways he saved the sport only a few whiny begrudgers will say negative things about him nate got lucky as well and choking isnt even a proper fighting technique in my opinion it's like biting or kicking someone in the groin nate was scared so he used a choke on him very unsportmanlike he's not a real sportman like conor he is just a thug

The criticism from me is not so much about his cornering, even though his cornering seems poor.

Its about pre fight decisions. If he tells Conor to not take a certain fight i have to believe Conor listens to him.

Conor was absolutely the money fight and had plenty of options in front of him, taking a short notice change of opponent, against someone bigger and longer by some margin than he ever fought while jumping up so much in weight you make the bigger guy more comfortable than you is the epitome of stupid and shouldn't have happened.

Still find criticism of McGregors ground game a bit premature, we still don't know. He survived well against Mendes, he had an impressive submission escape too. He was beaten up by Diaz before he ever hit the ground in this fight.

Same with his cardio, I think yesterday was a bit of an outlier. Between his weight gain and his idiotic swinging for the fence, he was gassed. In a title fight, I don't believe that happens. Still fancy hin to beat Frankie tbh.

JK told him to "pepper that front leg" at the end of the first round
He was promptly ignored and I think it would have made a big difference

I'd be astonished if Kavanagh was able to sway Conor all that much regarding fight decisions. He seems to me the type of guy that has so much self belief that he's going to make a decision and run with it regardless.

I think we saw that with regards to when Aldo pulled out at 189 and Mendes was the fill-in opponent. From Kavanagh:

    http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2015/6/26/8850887/ufc-189-news-interview-jose-aldo-chad-mendes-all-the-same-to-conor-mcgregor
"It was UFC president Dana White who called me and asked how we felt about Chad Mendes stepping in to fight Conor for the belt. Conor was sleeping at the time so I walked into his room and told him it could be Mendes instead. He opened one eye, said ‘They're all the same' and then went back to sleep. That's as far as any negotiation went."

Kavanagh told him it looks like it's Mendes, Conor said do it, the fight was made. Personally, I'd imagine that's how it goes all the time.

His ground game vs. Mendez was very little. He defended against a man sitting on top of him. Very basic stuff.

In hindsight now it's easy to say taking the fight was stupid. Little to gain, everything to lose. Letting Nate off the weight cut, only 10 days to prepare. If he beats him though no one says a word and the train keeps moving.

The gameplan looked bad last night. It seemed as if he was sure if the left connected flush it was lights out. When that didn't happen he just seemed to panic and keep throwing it harder. He wasn't enjoying the normal reach advantage he's used to and missed a lot of shots. He wasn't selective with his punches and looked slower than normal.

Maybe the extra weight impacted his speed and gas tank. His power certainly didn't transfer as well as most thought it would albeit Nate is durable and can take a lot of damage. Commenting on his ground game is madness, he clearly was out on his feet when he shot for the takedown and there was only going to be one outcome from there.

GSP lost badly in a huge upset and came back stronger, hopefully Conor can do the same. He definitely needs to fight smarter though and have a gameplan, was really disappointing to see him go out like that. Nate is a rangy fighter and has good boxing but I wasn't expecting him to pick Conor apart on the feet.

Surely defending from the full guard is the hardest? Open to correction of course, I've never done it. Still he survived, and dealt damage from the bottom. His ground game did not cost him the win last night.

That is a little bit of the myth being built up though too from Kavanagh I think, well, he and Dana both had different stories when it came to how the replacement was decided when it came to the Aldo fight so one of them is lying.

I would imagine Kavanagh has stayed true to Conors overriding feeling when it came to picking a replacement but maybe embellished it a little to make it seem even more impressive.

Could be wrong of course, Dana's version just seemed the more plausible.

I'm not saying you're wrong but to be honest, if it's a shootout between Dana and another party over who is lying then my money is on Dana every day of the week. The bloke tells so many lies on a constant basis that if he told me grass was green I'd have to double check myself.

Google 'Dana White Lies' and there's years and years worth of stuff from fighters, media etc that will come up refuting things he has said and so on.

Oh yeah, I am well aware and it came into consideration :)

It just seemed that if Dana was going to lie about he would have said something similar to Kavanagh to hype it up more, would have served his interest more :)

Because he's actually a journeyman fighter, losing 8 out 21 fights, 3 of his last 5 and is full of chit.
