    Tralee City ffs

Tallaght is officially classed as a village
It's all to do with mentality;)
Why are there such a disproportionate number of complete and utter gobshítes in Kerry? The place really is an embarrassment.

Absolutely thick idea from yet another waste-of-space Kerry troglodyte.
'Sup, babes, stood up in Coppers again?:pac:

At one stage, the High King sat in Tuam. And it has a cathedral (two, actually, I believe) I'm starting a campaign.

We could reinstate the Republic of Connacht while we're at it.

Yes please. Although Castlebar will not be the capital, ya hear?

    It's gotta be Tuam :/
There are very few genuine cities in Ireland. ..Cork wouldn't classify as a city in Spain for example.

I've been to cities the size of Cork in the US and cities roughly the size of Galway in Belgium. Why is Spain the benchmark?

There is a city in the Netherlands with only 40 inhabitants.

Maybe we should use that as a benchmark

Also cordoba and granada are classed as cities and they have about the same population as cork

They want to call that a city?

They must be off their tralee

Tralee is far from a city, they would have a better chance getting classed as a landfill

It's funny the way people say Irish cities wouldn't be called cities in other countries. If anything other countries have even more arbitrary requirements than us to qualify as a city. You've cities in the USA the size of small towns here.

The UK seems to be terrible for it too. The North has as many "cities" as the republic despite having a much smaller population. Add on to that the raft of towns around the UK upgraded to cities for EII's jubilee in 2002. At least here city status doesn't depend on whether a single specific person lives long enough.

Derry and Belfast are in the UK and are subject to their rules on local government.

We're talking about the Republic of Ireland here.

New York, London, Tokyo et al. They are Cities.

Tralee. You're a glorified village. Delusions of grandeur indeed.

I know I'm being pedantic but Tralee has over 3 times the population of The City of London.

Aren't cities classed by population not by having a fancy church in it.

Historically any place with a cathedral was regarded as a city, e.g. Clogher or Lismore.
The smallest "city" in Ireland with a royal charter is Cashel. Maybe it should have been named in the same breath as Kilkenny in the Act.
Personally I would think Mr. McEllistrum's ambition to make Tralee a city has the same chance of success as that of an emission of flatulated gas surviving a whirlwind.

Tralee and Killarney are both too small to have full scale city councils. That just wouldn't make any sense and 'city status' isn't really meaningful in any other context.

What could be done though is a rationalisation and restoration of the concept of town councils.

I think it was absolutely insane to remove town councils as they do provide a focus for towns. Our problem was that town councils had not been modernised and were like a snapshot of Ireland in 1921. Many very large towns had none while very small ones had full councils.

We need some kind of restructure of local government that allows for town councils and mayors. Ireland's almost unique in not having that structure and it does prevent towns from developing properly as they lack a platform for putting together local plans.

In many ways we end up doing things with voluntary organisations like the Tidy Towns Committee that should really be functions of a town/village council.

I can see why Tralee needs some kind of proper status but it absolutely does not need a full blown City Council.
