Architecturally she is beautiful, the fact they've done away with the bulbus I would be keen to see the actual fuel savings over a prolonged period

Yarmouth, England. Swinging the ship at the widest part of the river otherwise you have to back it the whole way out. Very little room for error and it better be slack water, or you're going to make the Harbour Master unhappy.

    That's very impressive looking

Looks like an ERRV, wonder is she DP? Would make the swing significantly handier

I was reading today about the Kirov class cruiser.... the worlds largest active combatant (excluding carriers obviously)

    kw2vxghptjmcmzo5smtx.jpg

The scale & capability of this thing is staggering.
250m long & displacing 28,000 tonnes.... hundreds of missiles & up to 5 helicopters carried (it usually carries 3 though)....

But to get a handle on the scale of this thing, just look below deck at the size of their behemoth surface to air missile silos...

    uzfq9oclivfdknl4ida0.jpg

There were 96 of these massive tubes....
    Complemented by 364 other SAMs...

    Some might call that overkill!

After a troubled start to it's life, the USN's newest aircraft carrier, the USS America is finally ready to put to see again.
After 10 months of repairs, despite being less than a year into it's lifespan.

She's an assault ship, but can carry f-35's

ah that explains it then, more of a troop carrier then

It will be one of 2 marine assault ships that will be tailored for flight operations.... there is no well deck to load/unload troops via landing craft or hovercraft.

Typically it will carry around 30 aircraft, so capable enough.
But it spent the last 10 months being modified so the Ospreys & F35s wouldn't rip through it's deck!

Because sometimes you just need another 30m!

More along the lines of the "Sea Control Ship" concept the US Navy developed in the 1970s:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_Control_Ship

Basically a smaller alternative to the big fleet carriers, but still able to act as a flagship for an amphibious assault group, and to provide it both with air cover and close air support for any landing operation carried out with the other ships of said group. Pretty much all Wasp or America class ships can do that job, but USS America and her sister ship USS Tripoli (currently under construction) are, as BoJack pointed out, especially designed to support larger air groups than other ships of that kind.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

Not the most impressive looking vessel, but something that is a milestone.

The DARPA 'ACTUV' was cristened "Sea Hunter" yesterday.

The worlds largest autonomous surface vessel.
