With the way things are going in Agriculture, are we to be soon left with nothing?

It's hard to know. The big players like glanbia or dairy gold will keep dropping the prices. With the IFA the way it is they can't do anything and no one will take them seriously after the scandal they've been through. The way the weather is its adding extra pressure to already struggling farmers. SFP are being cut and the diesel price is dropping yet fertiliser prices are still high. It will be an interesting few years

Yeah who cares about our economy being one of the fastest growing economies in Europe. Exchequer returns have surpassed expectations, employment values are increasing, business & Household debt is reducing but sure recovery me hole is right  Did someone mention whingers?

The choice of candidates in Clare isn't exactly inspiring. We even have a professional surfer. Surf on Dudes!!

“I am a professional surfer who has returned to the land to start a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm near Lahinch, as I believe wholehearted this offers the most realistic, scalable solution to the issues surrounding rural life in Ireland.”

All these things are great OVERALL.
But there's a huge disparity in WHERE its happening.

I've spoken to plenty of people who say they are feeling things worse now that they did in 2009/10.

For people living in economically stagnant rural areas, essentially tied there with housing and children in schools. There is often little felt of a recovery..

Its taken tool long into an election campaign for the current government parties to acknowledge that certain portions of society are not seeing any local recovery... who cares if the exchequer figures are good if the insurance on both cars have doubled, and similar direct costs on households are increasing and local employment and wages are stagnant or declining. A friend of mine was told to expect a 10% cut in salaries in April 1 as the company is in trouble after an upward only rent increase by the property owners.

Saying "the benefits will trickle down eventually" isn't good enough, its a cop out !!

And only a banana republic with a housing and homelessness crisis would say they are hoping to bring back 700,000 people to the country.. Where the **** will they live !

Given the scale of the financial crisis, the current economic forecasts of other countries within the EU and the commodities markets looking shakey again it's incredible to find ourselves gaining momentum.

These are first steps. Like it or not it's recovery that we'll need to see continue. What do people expect the government to just turn on the cash tap and start spending non-existent money?

"Banana Republic" is a pure and utter cop out retort. We are the antithesis of a banana republic, it's just a term used by Sinn Fein and their ilk like to bandy about to garner mob mentality.

Housing there is a major issue, in both quantity and quality at reasonable prices. Homeless "crisis" has become pure political football, there was homelessness and long term unemployed right the way through "the good times" but nobody gave a toss then.

The whole "feed the country from our back garden allotments" isn't something I'd believe in but
"Mr Smith is one of the most influential surfers in Europe and has played a key role in fostering Ireland as a worldwide surfing destination."

He has to be commended if he's using his influence to help our tourism sector. How many of us can say we've done similiar? I certainly can't. Lahinch is a cracking spot so anything he can do to boost numbers visiting there is a winner for locals.

Hi folks, very quick question, 8ft pdm strainers with one internal strand of high tensile and two at the roads. Should I brace them of is there any need?

    Correct. Im not from Castlebar.
But, I work in a small company, in a small rural town. We have had great difficulty filling vacancies in semi skilled roles in the last number of years. In my view, welfare in this country is too generous for those that have no reason not to work only sheer laziness. I have to say I'm sick of whingers too.
If you work hard and smart, you will be rewarded.

    Ok
My banana republic comment may have been OTT.

But there is no chance of improved economic policies to include rural areas when until the election the government wouldn't acknowledge there was a disparity between the recovery seen in the major urban areas and rural Ireland.

Banana republic isn't so far ott at all. Our fiscal debt is steady at 200 billion+. Our politicians, civil servants, our entire judiciary and justice system are being paid still as if we were digging gold and and pumping oil. And it don't matter a f who gets in. It's still a runaway train.

I know it's not a perfect guide but look at the number of new cars
    http://files.simi.ie/statistics/2016/Car%20Sales%20by%20County%20January%202016.pdf
Yes Dublin had the lions share but across the board sales are up 30%

    Totally different subject...
A mate of mine wants to buy a couple of springers from me, he's in the BDGP I'm not...
If I give him the tag numbers can he have their star rating checked before he buys??

If you ring ICBF they might give you that information, I doubt if they'll give it to your friend who doesn't own the heifers unless he pretends he's you.

This backpacker was in Cavan today. Passed him heading in the Athlone Rd. he was around the town centre later on, and thus evening they were heading out the N3 Dublin rd.
Pretty hard to get a lift, I imagine :D
