Yes, very well done. Trust the plan - you averaged well under 9:40 for your MP sections there. With a backpack!

... three days after 20 miles with 10 at steady pace.

Some seriously impressive training going on here, fair play.

Well done AM, solid run and your right, this is for you and nobody else. I only decided target after last long run, went really well. All the time no pressure, and at end of the day 26.2 is long way and you have to be fully prepared, so on that score think your well on the way to great Marathon:)

+1 to this - I find it very tough to get going beyond easy pace with a backpack, its possibly a mental issue as much as physical, either way its tough! Well done

thanks D :) I've seen you mention that on your log and found myself wondering what on earth you have in there... I find if you leave out the makeup/lippy/mascara etc its much easier to manage :D

joking aside though, next weeks runmute has a block of 10 miles @mp, no breaks, I will be leaving the backpack behind for that one :eek:

No chance would i be leaving the essentials out of the backpack.:D I think leaving it behind for the longer MP stuff is definitely a wise move, you're going well though - keep up the good work

    Thursday 18th February: 4 miles recovery run @ hr > 130

I walk the dog every morning at 6.30, its been a long winter but this morning the very first glimmer of brightness peaking through the dark sky gave me a real lift, pity I had no phone to capture the beauty. That early morning walk for the 6 months of the year where the various stages of sunrise occur & then daylight reigns, is my favourite time of day.

Headed out at lunchtime, given what a beautiful day it is I thought I’d thoroughly enjoy this but I didn’t in the end... The body was tired and I find sometimes on these recovery runs that I’ve almost forgotten how to run, there’s no flow or rhythm, to be expected after a hard run like yesterday I guess. There’s a definite pinching going on in my lower back this morning and both calves are extremely tight. I have a sports massage booked for tonight which I fully expect to be excruciating...

    Friday 19th February

Went for aforementioned massage last night, oh sweet mother of god the pain…. I’m pretty sure the masseuse took pleasure in going in deep, TBL I can pass on the details if you like, no need to ask her to go harder, in any language! Speaking of which, I may have turned the air blue with mine :D it was worth it though, the calves feel loose & light and no pinching going on either.

Today is a rest day and the last few weeks I’ve done a strength session on my rest day. Couldn’t get a straight answer from the experts at the talk on Monday night but I’m guessing by the faces they were making they are in the ‘rest means rest’ camp. Skipped the heavy stuff and just did some gentle yoga stretches instead. Will try and fit the S&M in on Sunday instead.

My guy uses reverse psychology on me when that happens. 'You can ask me to ease up and I will, but you won't get the same benefits, might as well get your money's worth etc etc'. I usually buy it because it IS what I'm paying him for. :pac:

    Saturday 20th Feb 18 miles including 2@eays/2@MP x 4 times

I wasn't quite sure I how I feeling about this one during the week. On the one hand you have nice simple 2 mile laps so could set the watch up for that very easily, on the other hand you have 18 miles with 8@MP.... Today was also the day to try out the breakfast I'll probably be bringing with me to RD, a 44g tub of porridge oats that you only need to add boiling water too, along with a banana (or some apple as I had this morning) and a glass of Kelkin Revive that should do me fine on the day.

I set off from the Phoenix park just after 10 and was just getting into my easy pace when I spotted a pink jacket bobbing up and down and immediately recognised the running gate of aquinn, crossed the road & stopped for a quick chat, she had 3 miles left in her 16 and was full of beans, typical :D.

Out the gate and down the quays the plan was to run 9 miles to Seapoint & then turn back. It was drizzling rain and I remember thinking gosh I'm lucky, it could be bucketing down....

The first MP section started along the quays somewhere, I went off way to fast, spent the first mile trying to level out the pace, all felt fine. 2 section was somewhere along the Booterstown road, I dipped in through Blackrock park too which was beautiful and very quiet, I'd forgotten about the very steep hill on the exit followed by some Rocky steps (yes, I hummed the theme tune as I ran up them :D) all the way through Blackrock where I see they still hold Saturday Ballet classes in the same place I went to as a kid (we will just put that in the 'what was I thinking box...). Turned around at Seapoint after a quick photo and Oh My God what the F? I knew the wind was going to be against me on the way back although I hadn't noticed it much on the way out but literally as I turned the heavens opened  before I got back through Blackrock Village I was soaked through, I don't think I've ever been so wet..The run back was the least pleasant I've ever had but I wasn't letting the wind or the driving rain stop me hitting MP so I pushed on.

The final two miles (easy) up the quays & back into the park were horrendous, I was freezing cold and my legs were starting to cease up with the slower pace. Character building! I tried to relax and just embrace it, nothing else I could do and anyway not long to go though to get back to the car and dry clothes!!! The joy!! and the car heater :) and a sense of achievement that I hit my paces again today, and solo. I was glad I hadn't asked anyone to come out with me in that weather.

Lap Distance Time Pace Elev HR
    1 2.0 mi 21:33 10:46 /mi -86 ft 126 bpm
    2 2.0 mi 19:08 9:34 /mi -18 ft 150 bpm
    3 2.0 mi 21:46 10:53 /mi 10 ft 139 bpm
    4 2.0 mi 19:20 9:40 /mi 36 ft 153 bpm
    5 2.0 mi 21:55 10:57 /mi 5 ft 140 bpm
    6 2.0 mi 19:10 9:35 /mi -45 ft 153 bpm
    7 2.0 mi 21:58 10:59 /mi -4 ft 143 bpm
    8 2.0 mi 19:23 9:41 /mi 21 ft 154 bpm
    9 2.0 mi 22:40 11:20 /mi 63 ft 142 bpm
    10 0.0 mi 49s 10:21 /mi 6 ft 149 bpm

So MP is at 150 hr? Is that what I understand from above? Which was around 4:10 pace today?

Two things I would say... First, You're right not to put pressure on yourself re target time.

Second... When I did this plan (or my version of it), There was a 14mi @ MP midweek run a few weeks out from the marathon. D told me, if you can do that run at MP, you can do the marathon at that pace. That was a huge confidence boost and turned out to be right.

You've been way more consistent than me on the midweek sessions, that will really stand to you. You're much stronger now than you've ever been, if the rest of the training goes as well you'll have a great run in Rotterdam.

thanks Anna, yep, I have this highlighted on the plan in RED :D I still need to find someone to run it with me which won't be easy given nearly everyone is in the middle of a marathon plan & its a Wednesday
