thanks :D just doing some maths (haven't opened the beers yet...) Stook was 1:32:54, today was 1:27:54, thats a 5 min pb (isn't it??) and very big confidence boost.

Was heading to the start line with some clubmates, a girl passed us going in the opposite direction and she said to her friend 'I just want the socks' I said to my clubmate 'I want to be that runner again' :p his response? Too late AM, too late :D

    Trim 10 miles

Trust the training…. something myles splitz has said to me a few times and when out for another slow plod during the week his words suddenly popped into my head, so that was today’s mantra.

Arrived in Trim & immediately spotted mbarr doing his warmup #swott :D. Headed to the registration room & meet some clubmates, did a couple of warm ups while I figured out what was what & despite being told by a marshall there was no bag drop at the start, discovered there was, phew as it was a bit chilly and I was only wearing shorts & singlet so very reluctant to strip off too early!. Head up to the start with the club, took my inhaler and a gel on the walk up. Was passed along here by FBOT of all people!! ‘what the hec are you doing here?’ but he was too busy to stop and chat :D doing mileage I discovered afterwards. Met tang who has had a bit of man flu the last few days, he sandbagged some more by telling me he wasn’t feeling that great, yeah, sure  I’m still not forgiving you for the heart attack yesterday!! Met younganne then too and we chatted a bit & then joined by FBOT who decided as he couldn't find anyone else better to talk to he would finally stop and say hello. All of us were on the look out for the elusive Bogger Lemon…

Spotted the 90 min pacer who is also a boardsie, didn’t get the chance to say hello, sorry! decided to stand a few rows ahead of him as I saw a number of people I recognised that I knew would be slower than me and I didn’t want to get penned in.

    Mile 1-5:
Meno had suggested running in front of the pacer and using them as a point of reference and push on after halfway if I felt ok, okie dokie, that was the plan. I don’t remember much about the individual miles but the first couple seemed to be fairly sheltered with the wind coming from the side, the pace felt quite comfortable but I was conscious of overcooking it too early so I stuck with it. Repeating my Stook mantra of I can and I will with every step, I was NOT letting the negative thoughts in, not today.

    8:54, 8:52, 8:52, 8:45, 9:06

I had missed the mile beep for mile 3 & 4 but I figured they were sub 9 as was keeping a good eye on the watch throughout, when I saw mile 5 I thought that’s fine, I had slowed to take on some water which were in cups, and looking at strava now I realise there was a hill too, echm, ok I don’t remember any hills :p

A girl passed me at the water stop at mile 4 ish in (I think) a green top and she looked strong, I decided I’d go with her. I remember thinking how strong I felt, my legs felt good, not tiring at all. The breathing was also pretty dam good until about mile 6.5 or so when it got a little more shallow but it was never a problem, I was never gasping for breath until the last few hundred meters.

    Miles 6-10:
At some point me & my new friend turned into the wind, that’s ok though, I’ve done a lot of running in the wind recently, I wasn't letting it slow me down, we did however find some people to draft off, obviously both having the same idea :) and the miles went by a little like this: draft, pass, draft, pass, repeat. I did take my turn at front running, it wasn't all take take take :D. I lost my new friend at mile 9, she headed off into the sunset, I made a mental note to look for her at the end to say thanks but forgot.. Strava also indicates a hill around mile 7, nope, don’t remember. At the 7 mile mark all that was in my head was ‘St Annes Parkrun and you’re done’ I knew I was on for a negative split, I still felt strong and was thinking at this point of everyone else and how they had done, I was pretty dam sure FBOT & tang had hit & exceed target and just wanted to get over the line now to find out.

    8:35, 8:42, 8:45, 8:37, 8:39

On the approach to the turn into the industrial esate there were crowds cheering, I heard a ‘come on AM’ and thought it was a clubmate I’d expected to see on the course (where were you happygoose??!) but it was FBOT, I raised my arms in the air, delighted with myself and took off like a scalded cat, spotted tang’s head over the wall before I came around the corner and sure enough there he was with a large as life Lemon by his side, they gave me a shout out which kept me going another bit but then I realised the finish was no-where in sight & I had to run to the end of the road!!! balls! before I knew it tang was running beside me egging me on and younganne on the sidelines cheering too. Thank you both!

Over the line & stopped the watch which said 1:27:56, WHOOP WHOOP WHOOOOOOOP! a 5 min PB over stook which was 1:32:54. Official time 1:27:54

Trust the training indeed :) am delighted, for myself, for tang, for younganne & mbarr, we’ve worked hard the last 6-8 weeks and it’s paying off, at last. Met up in the club house for coffee & cake, well, we had coffee FBOT had cake :p, I think 5 slices may have been a touch too much M? My clubmates did extraordinarily well winning womens & mens team prizes and some individual prizes for our fantastic faster runners. Big well done to them, they’ve earned it.

So where from here? Coachy (:D) has looked at the paces from today and my avg HR and given some advice & guidelines on where to go from here with HR and slightly more frightening, my HM pace for Galway  however, I could have run a couple more miles today (tang I know you’re probably thinking ‘really?’ but I had shot off before I met you hence the breathing :D)

A great day out indeed, the rain held off until the last mile and a big well done to Trim AC for a fantastic event. I'll be back next year for sure.
