Caring about anthems and flags, constantly going on about (a usually distorted view of) history, claiming that your race possesses some unique set of characteristics etc- These are hallmarks of a moron . If I ever got into power I'd ban all that sh1t together with anniversaries, military parades etc.

Yes, but Ireland's call is so simple it used words that rhymes with words that means the opposite, or a negative to the original.
It is on the same level as Baa, baa black sheep as a song.

    Offensive? Hahahahaha!
Northern Ireland should have their own team

I've only ever heard that suggested once before by a particularly bitter northern unionist politician.

At least if it's going to take the name of only one country making up the team then use the flag and anthem to go along with the name.

You'll note it's called the 6 Nations not 6 Countries. Nations are not necessarily countries and can be aggregates of people. I'd say most of the players from Ulster would be okay with being of the Irish nation (of people) but would consider themselves politically British.

TO settle all argument's either adopt Michael Healy Rae's musical offering or the winner of this year's Eurovision, although 4 road's to Glenamaddy by Big Tom is a cracking tune ,as is ''don't close the lid till I kiss me mammy goodbye'' by wee Daniel, always bring's a tear to me eye.Actually ,''Drop kick me sweet Jesus, thru the goalpost's of life'' again by wee Daniel,it's a right ripping tune,it's a very silly auld foreign game anyway, with rules nobody understand's,I mean what's with throwing a funny looking ball side way's anyway, replace it with cricket,it's the main game on the mainland anyway.

In fairness, most songs / anthems would sound pathetic when compared to La Marseillaise
    Italian one isn't bad either.

I like Amhrán na bhFiann, but for an all-island team I'm not overly fussed if it doesn't get played. Ireland's Call is just fcuking atrocious though.

It's just some crappy tune that's meant to be all incluive so that people from Dublin would play too.

I care little for it, my main grip though is that there should be a verse at least in Irish.

No matter if it is an anthem, presumed to be an anthem, for one Nation, a Country, two Nations, an International team or a collective of beings...

That song is the worst ear bashing cráp ever written.

On the One Road would be the song to sing :p

Coulters version sounds like it was jotted down in 5 minutes.

I wish we could have a national anthem with the words Fianna Fail removed. Any connection to a corrupt party of traitors who bankrupted Ireland and cost thousands of people their lives should be removed.

For a land that is famous for its poetry, song writing and story telling, Ireland's Call is truly an embarrassment.

Have you ever tried translating Amhrán na bhFiann into plain English?

It was originally written in English

It's offensive and this current rugby fad is worryingly making it acceptable.

Either Northern Ireland should have their own team, they should play with one of their own sides, or the team shouldn't be called Ireland.

    It's just so...lame.

Why not a verse or 2 of Danny Boy or some other song if the anthem was unacceptable?

Because it's pub song and even more cringeworthy. Pre-existing songs generally speaking don't really work as anthems and IMO a purposely written one is better... (See next quote for prime example.. )

I can understand and accept why it exists, but it's such a poor song. I cringe whenever I hear it and it compares very poorly against La Marseillaise.

Scrap it and get someone to write a stirring anthem for the team!

Off with ya... we eagerly await your submission !!

Just be prepared to get lashed out of it and have at least one thread every February dedicated to your efforts :D

Ireland is the Island; this Island, the team is from this island

Ah, not really. Of the team that finished yesterday's game 5 players were born and raised outside Ireland and their only affiliation here is that they make their living playing for provincial sides. These provincial sides are business ventures rather than sportsmen representing their province.

Nathan White - born and raised in New Zealand.
CJ Stander - born and raised in South Africa
Richardt Strauss - born and raised in South Africa.
Jared Payne - born and raised in New Zealand.

So the team may live on the island but not all are from the island.
The 4 mentioned have previously represented their country of birth at some level.
Should we now have another weird Anthem for them.
Irelands Call was written by Phil Coulter, an RTE and media 'darling'

Why is our national anthem shunned in favour of this simplistic joke of a song that could have been written by a five year old?

It's a nice anthem and is agreeable to British-Irish ears.

I understand the political necessity of having such a song, but it's a horrible song/anthem/whatever you want to class it as.

This. I have never heard a more puerile song in my life.

What's bizarre is that outside of Ireland, people tend to view Ireland's Call in a really positive light. There's obviously no formal ranking of these things, but it's reasonably common to see it directly referenced as "God, our anthem is a dirge, why can't we be like the Irish and get something like Ireland's Call?".

Absolutely; I agree 100% with you. It's all about opinion. I think I'm safe in assuming you don't agree with me? Fine; I have no problem with that whatsoever.

    It is horrible though!
    ;)

By the way; what is this "sex" thing you speak of?

Some people like it and others don't as for the anthems I like both anthems.

I like Ireland's call, sang it with pride amongst Frenchmen in Stade de France yesterday.

But La Marseillaise is the best anthem I have heard imho. I love they way they spontaneously burst out singing it during the match.

Aye, plenty of time for the frogs to learn how to sing whilst the rest fight for you. In fairness maybe the Northern Irish guys need to be kept right as well. What about the sash or gstq being played as well as the soldiers song? ;-)

Allons enfants de la Patrie, Arise, children of our Nation,
Le jour de gloire est arrivé ! The day of glory has arrived!
Contre nous de la tyrannie, Against us tyranny's
L'étendard sanglant est levé, (bis) Bloody banner is raised, (repeat)
Entendez-vous dans les campagnes Do you hear, in the countryside,
Mugir ces féroces soldats ? The roar of those ferocious soldiers?
Ils viennent jusque dans vos bras They're coming right into your arms
Égorger vos fils, vos compagnes ! To cut the throats of your sons, your women!

Aux armes, citoyens, To arms, citizens,
Formez vos bataillons, Form your battalions,
    Marchons, marchons ! Let's march, let's march!
Qu'un sang impur Let an impure blood
Abreuve nos sillons ! Soak our fields!

I jest. I think nearly all national anthems are crap. The French have a good tune and really enjoyed it in escape to victory.

I don't think in rugby the anthem is that big an issue for the Northern Irish fellas even if they unionists. Think they can get beyond politics and I suspect they are more concerned with an 18 stone muscled monster grabbing their goolies.

I posted a thread on this previously in the Rugby forum; but it was against the charter and was removed. So I might as well add what I had said to this:
National anthems are a huge part of the build-up to international matches, particularly in competitions such as the World Cup and the ongoing Six Nations. They really set the tone for an exciting match; with hype being a huge part of sports in today's world.
The Welsh and Scottish anthems at home are, in my opinion, great example of passionate, prideful and elated anthems when sung. The French anthem, of course, is another obvious paragon.
And then there's Ireland's Call. Opinion is divided on this one. Yes, it's catchy; but is 'catchiness' really that important when it comes to a Nation's anthem? Personally, I feel a national anthem should encompass a nation's history, culture and pride. It should be suited to its use, i.e. to be sung passionately and loudly by the team and fans in a stadium. I think Ireland's Call verges on being rather 'pop song-ish'; its lyrics (1st verse pasted below) seem much too generic, not saying much about our Nation's rich heritage and history - and its melody doesn't, to me, resemble a historic song sung by our Irish ancestors.
But then again, this is all just my opinion. I'd like to hear other opinions on it, I feel it should be discussed. Amhrán na bhFiann is a great anthem, but of course it's questionable whether it's appropriate to the whole island of Ireland.
I'm not sure what the alternatives are - Fields of Athenry springs to mind, but again I'm not sure if it encompasses our history and heritage. I'd like to hear your opinions. Rant over, finally!

"Come the day and come the hour, Come the power and the glory! We have come to answer our country's call, From the four proud provinces of Ireland
    Ireland, Ireland,
    Together standing tall!
    Shoulder to shoulder,
    We'll answer Ireland's call!"

While we're on about weird rugby songs, why do Munster fans sing Fields of Athenry like it's their anthem? Athenry is in Connacht.

La M is a very gruesome and bloody anthem. Always surprised to hear people sing along to the tune.

Up there with AnF for dreariness.
