If I'm drinking Guinness it'll only be in a pub that I know I'll get a good pint like Mulligan's in Poolbeg street. But given the choice I'll have a Galway Hooker stout over a Guinness any day.

    What??

    They're two totally different topics.

mine, the 'best pint in the world' (no less) topic will forever remain a reference point for tourists and locals alike for the rest of virtual time!

Years ago, I'd often go drinking with a friend, both of us on Guinness. After a while, I noticed that when we'd finish a pint, there would be rings from the head along my glass at various intervals, ie. mouthfuls, while his glass would be almost clear. He suggested that maybe the glasses were washed with a different detergent (but I thought that was a bit stupid). I reckon it was down to different drinking styles, not that I know what mine is.

    Has anybody else noticed this?

I'd say the clear glass had been washed with Renovate detergent in a Spulboy or something.

First they came for the socialists...

In the Netherlands they rinse out the glass before pouring so it doesn't have a head. Could be the same thing here, one guy is getting a rinsed glass which the head won't stick too.

Had Super Bock stout when in Portugal last year and that was much nicer than Guinness. Guinness is a poor stout in my opinion. Not a bad beer overall as its nicer than most lagers but a terrible stout.

I don't like Guinness myself but my father in law drinks it. He drinks it from cans though. Ive never really known anyone to do that. My husband would have the odd pint but he thinks drinking it from a can is disgusting.

I was solely a cider and spirits drinker until recently enough. Having turned over to Guinness I wouldn't consider drinking anything but stout anymore :o

Thankfully I find Guinness leaves me with no real hangover. Beamish was a nice pint but it had me in an awful state the morning after! Must try Murphy's some night.

What's the difference between stout & porter? And why does Guinness call itself a beer?

Gave up drinking Guinness years ago. O'Hara's stout, Dark Arts porter, Porterhouse Wrasslers or porter, Sweetman's porter are all far superior to Guinness.

Haven't a clue but porters don't seem to be as creamy in my experience. Isn't beer an all encompassing term for stout, lager, ale, ipa etc?

Forgot about Sweetman's stuff. Quality pint.

    According to you.

I'd take a Guinness over any of them.

The only way to drink Guinness is straight from a pint bottle.

    Because it is.

I love a pint of Guinness as much as the next man but I've grown out of the paddywhackery /mythology of it to a certain extent: all that guff about it not traveling well, "letting it stand" and the fact that everybody has their own pub that somehow pours the best pint in the country.

Agree also that the bottles are lovely, especially the foreign extra.

In reality, there's no difference. Stout is the name that used to be given to the strongest (stoutest) porters, but most regular stouts these days aren't any stronger than any other type of beer. You can get imperial stouts which are a lot stronger (8-11% would be typical).

Beer is just the generic name for a drink typically brewed with water, malted barley, hops and yeast. All stouts, porters, ales and lagers are types of beer.

Guinness is fine...but I don't get why people obsess over it.
It's got a nice texture but it's really, really bland.

The only thing it's really got going for its popularity; the way it's got its claws into and dominates Irish culture.

Better than that, Guinness and absinthe.

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

To be fair, the cold, draught /nitro stout a lot of us grew up with is a relatively recent thing. I still enjoy a pint of Guinness but it does taste relatively bland (the cold doesn't help of course) in comparison to a lot of others around these days, especially bottles.

    Here here!

What a drink. Am I right? Think about the black stuff. By God. You should be proud. Ah t'is grand isn't it?

I remember my first cravings for the black stuff grew when I was 15. I would have had my first proper sup the pint at Christmas and I remember being stuck in Irish class in the run up to a hot summer fantasising about a cold black beauty on my table. Everyday we had irish class I was dreaming about a thick creamy pint. I failed Irish but that's not important. I had many a scrumptious pint that summer.

So AH, what were your first magic Guinness moments? :)

I started drinking it when I was working in a bar years back. Didnt like it at first so the head barman would give me a glass of guinness with a dash of blackcurrant in it. Then I graduated on to pints of guinness with a dash of blackcurrant in it. Then I didn't need the blackcurrant anymore. Then I became a man and grew a beard.

I'm not trying to be cool or anything...but I literally only had a sip of a pint years ago and nothing since....

Taught it was rank....doubt I ever will at this stage :pac:
Though this may be an age/weird thing...you see no one my age group/People were in my year in school drink it....but often see younger and older people drink it

This happened regularly. Once I noticed it, I kept checking. My glass (and sometimes other friends) had the rings, but one particular friend (and less regularly others) would have a clear glass.
