The Union flag is so much more than the English . . . .

Not only does it belong to English British people all over the world, but its also a very eye catching design which has also become a fashion symbol in its own right. Nowadays you will see people of all nationalities wearing clothes with Union Jacks on them.

    Here are a few examples;

I think most Irish people say English when we should say British,But guess who I blame?thats right-I blame the English, I grew up watching the likes of Dad"s Army on TV.and the song "who do you think you are kidding mr hitler if you think old ENGLAND is done"; Also remember that Lord Nelson said that "England expects........; so maybe we take our cues from the likes of that??

So no one has actually ever experienced any real abuse from wearing a UJ on their clothing which was the point of the thread?

I caught a slap in Inchicore for wearing a Rangers top.

wouldn't bat an eyelid at anyone wearing a piece of clothing with union jack on display, an isis/daesh flag however would have me running for the hills however, its 2016 not 1912 :D

It depends on who's wearing it.

Someone who's Irish but lived in England... can't really see the harm.

BTW someone said Johnny Adair was dead? "Upthera"

A few people have chastised me for donning such apparel. I honestly have no idea why.

So what if my Reebok shoes and jacket have a little UJ flag on them? Who cares?

People have actually got aggressive over it! I've been called a Tan cnut and been told to fcuk off back to England and suckle on the queen's titties.

Any other people deal with such morons?
Morons? pot calling the kettle black there. I doubt a single person here believed your ludicrous like about "honestly having no idea why". But FFS if you are going to lie like that do not immediately show that you know fine fucking well they they are doing it!

It's the union flag (not jack), unless displayed on a boat.

    Are ye boats? Are ye?

I agree but I think the poster you quoted was joking.

The troll has been banned. :)

Context is important too imo. When some loyalist inbred is wearing it, it's not good. But when someone who simply grew up in Britain has/wears a union jack, no different to anyone having the flag of where they're from.

It represents Britain and Britain's history - good and bad and diverse.

Hard to take anyone seriously if they get offended by the union jack yet consume mountains of British culture (sometimes even contributing to the British economy in doing so).

But see here's the point. People like you completely ignoring the lies of the op to pander to some stereotype that really doesn't exist anymore just for some excuse to wheel out this cliched rubbish

It may be clichéd but it's true.

Ye because having an issue with the British political establishment and it's past is the same to having a problem with British clubs and people how exactly? Should a British person who has a problem with one aspect of Irish culture be deemed a hypocrite if they don't hate everything Irish?

So why don't you take point with the other side and the lies churned out to push a stereotype? Or is it just fun to talk about the Irish as a collective "we" and talk about how backward "we" are, and then by "exposing" this and including yourself in it you can get a pat on the back by the rest of the boardies by showing us all how progressive you now are? Do you see the likes of the EDL and their fascist followers as representative of the English? Or do you hear the English people talk about how "we are backwards" because of them? You see it's the "enlightened" folks like yourself who are just as archaic but have gone the full circle

Oh for God's sake, you don't know me at all. I regularly criticise the self loathing types you refer to, who like to put us down and call us backwards (but not themselves) and I did not do the "We" thing at all, so relax instead of making rather excitable assumptions and leaps.

I can still however simultaneously hold the view that cutting the tiny union flag badge off pairs of jeans and seeing it as a big deal for the t-shirt of a band whom I love, to have a union jack on it (yet still no problem collecting the rest of their merchandise) is laughable. And worse again, if the likes of that pettiness is from people who consume masses of British culture.

The George's cross symbolises EDL ugliness to me (generally speaking - it's not always the case, to be fair) but the union flag represents a hugely diverse society (including many Irish people) and I associate it with that rather than oppression, because symbols can change over time. To me it represents ordinary British people and British culture.

It's an eye-catching design but personally, I find it aesthetically ugly. Too many unpleasing angles.

And anyway, can't the Union Jack only be worn at sea? :pac:

I sported a pair of British Knights back in the day. They were popular and never had any issues wearing them. Think they had the flag on the tongue.

This is just not true, they may as well be from Iran, they are nothing like us when you think about it. an example of this is when you are in Spain, the locals can always tell the English and Irish apart, mostly because we are respectful and not acting like lager louts.

    This post is hilarious.

    You are correct.

I was totally aware of the terminology (union Jack Vs Union flag), but for the purposes of this thread I chose to use Union Jack, simply because the majority of posters on here wouldn't even know or care about such things :))

    For once we agree.

It's dead Kenyans, Burmese and Irish. It's dead black, white and brown, African, European and Asian. It's centuries of racism, sectarianism, ethnic cleansing and robbery, all unpunished. It's like the now defunct emblem of another European state, but because it mostly flew over the poor and the powerless it hasn't been given the same thoroughly deserved treatment.

This is pathetic, the same thing could be written about any symbol if you take everything out of context. There are people born in the 90's that could barely comprehend the values of people in the 70's, yet you sit behind your monitor pretending that you can paint a broad brush stroke on millions of people over 100's of years because they don't fit your cosy 21st century outlook.

We all live in the British Isles. ANyway having a problem with the Union Jack on a piece of clothing, such as Reebok, is a complete and utter moron.

A flag actually represents nothing worthwhile. Its just a symbol of division between humanity.

Evening feeling national pride is encouraging division.

Having said all that Im Scottish and I made sure I have Scottish flags on my number plate and I have a Saltire flying high too!

You are wasting your time with that old fart. 'Your man' is a self confessed Ra head, so I guess the Union flag is to him what a silver cross or a garlic necklace would be to a vampire :)
