After following this thread for the last year or so, I'm on the verge of buying a new GTI PP 3 door. Spec: manual, alcantara/cloth, DCC, sunroof, Dynaudio and tech pack. My one dilemma is the colour, I was all set to go for reflex silver, I feel it compliments the badging, front and pano roof, but am now having doubts. Having not seen one in the flesh in years ,( first ever mk7 gti I saw was silver), I feel it looks very ordinary on basic models but then again so does night blue and I currently have that on my mk7 r line and once coupled with a nice spec it looks very well ( sunshine also helps!!). Anyway I'll need to make a decision soon. I know colour is a personal thing but have any of you seen mk7 GTI reflex silver lately?? There's one on carzone currently which looks a little dull imo , but its always hard to judge by pictures. Anyway..opinions appreciated

152 5 door for sale in Galway? I know that car well, I know its original owner. It looks very smart in silver, really nice IMO. The sharp clean lines on the mk7 suit it. Silver is relatively rare too these days so you'll have something a bit different.
Agreed too that the darker colours hide the little details in the grills and your pano roof would be nice against silver.

I see a silver 151 GTI every day. Definitely a colour I would go with. The one I see only has halogens, so the red line doesn't go through the headlights, and I actually think this is better. I think I read on some UK Forum that you could spec without the line in the lights. From the back, the led tail actually sit the best of all the colours with silver.

Very nice. Do you have MIB 1 or 2 infotainment? Yeah love the Xenons. Took it for a good spin today, I think I'm adjusting to the diesel. There is some serious mid range poke all the same.

The push from the GTD and R is the same in gear. Both engines produce the same amount of torque so for day to day stuff the GTD will be every bit as quick as the R assuming they have the same ratios in their boxes.

    GTD 280lb/ft from 1,750-3250rpm
    R 280lb/ft from 1,800-5500rpm

Obviously when you want to stretch the R it has the extra bandwidth then to hold a gear for longer meaning it is faster, but for getting a pint of milk, you really don't be hitting the rev limiter.

Considering the GTD uses half the fuel and diesel is cheaper, it has serious performance per euro.

Similar reasoning as myself for picking the GTD vs GTI. Fair enough the GTI is more rapid, but doesn't have the low down grunt so you have to really drive it on to make the most of it.

My driving style is more used to to Diesel so I went that way.

Did anyone add a tuning box? Some of the more reputable ones like DTUK seem to be ok.

I'd agree for day to day driving it's very good. I rarely pushed by GTI to 6k rpm, between getting a chance to do so and the fact that it was very thirsty when you did.

From reading around there's a few negative stories about the DTUK boxes. There's a lot more positive ones than negative though but I kind of wonder does their presence on all the UK forums help quash the negative stories a bit.

If you were interested they usually have discounts on the various forums. Remaps mean bye bye warranty as they can scan to see if they were ever messed with now so the DTUK boxes are getting very popular.

The GTI (and the R) have bags of low down grunt - it's not like a Honda Civic where you have to drive the nuts off it to get anywhere!

The GTI will do into 40 MPG too very easily too, so unless you're doing inter-galactic mileage, the point of the GTD is a little lost on me, but each to their own of course ;) GTD does have lovely standard wheels, definitely the nicest standard wheels in the range I think.

Thanks for the input. The deal has been agreed now, I got the winter pack thrown in as well so not a bad spec all things considered. I would have liked keyless and an alarm! crazy that one is not available on a car costing this much,3 door or not. My current car 2.0 TDI R-line was a 142 so depreciation wise I took a bit of a hit, but happy enough with the deal overall and really looking forward to the new arrival!

Having read your comments and seen the pictures earlier in the thread I have also contacted Brian in Spirit detailing regarding a new car polish and ceramic coating package, so I hope to get up to him once my car arrives.

Happy days, did you go for all that spec mentioned earlier??

That's quite the machine. That front diff on the performance pack is meant to be excellent and I would consider it worth the money over the non pp.

    When is it expected?

I wouldn't be happy about the alarm / keyless either. That silver one in Galway is for sale because it was targeted by scum, wheels and other bits were taken off it. No alarm.

What's worse is, if the car doesn't have an alarm, it doesn't have deadlocks either - meaning that a thief just needs to break a window and open the door from the inside. Crazy imo.

Yeah, I suppose its pretty loaded alright, but I don't plan on changing so soon again! My annual mileage is below 10K so I don't require a diesel. My current car is immaculate and a nice spec but since the mk7 GTI came out I wanted one, I probably could have gotten one when I bought the r-line, but the basic spec was pretty poor and at the time I wasnt prepared to pay what was required to get the spec I wanted.
Having read so many positive reviews of the performance pack a few years back, I felt if I was going to get a GTI, it would have to have it. Red badges should look nice on the silver also! Will I ever get the use of the diff?? Not sure, I don't plan on having it on a track, but there's a few nice twists and turns on my commute to work!

By the way loads of useful information picked up here over the last year or so, so thanks to one and all!
Anyway Happy days indeed, hope to have it by end of April/start of May.

You'd nearly hold out for the 162 plate of its gonna be may! Although personally I'd be way to inpatient! I think someone on here is doing that with an a45 amg

What did your pal who got rid of the 152 gti change to after?
Did he just get rid because of lack of alarm?

    A new diesel Octavia VRS.
He got rid because his missus (and possibly himself too) didn't feel comfortable taking the GTI home again. Not worth the worry and stress to him, etc.

The scum down this neck of the woods like anything VW and Audis too, one of the reasons I wouldn't have a GTi myself.

There was a spate of it around Galway over the Christmas period. A gang targeting Golf's in particular for easily "eBay'd" parts - wheels, lights, etc.
And it wasn't just GTI's - I know of another lad with just a regular Highline Golf who woke up one morning to find they'd taken his rear bumper valence!

The alarm (which only comes standard on the R) does give some peace of mind, as it would also be triggered if the car was jacked up / lifted.

Yep, had the front fog light bracket nicked from my old Passat CC on my driveway overnight. FFS the part cost only €40 from VW and they still robbed it, fella at the parts desk when I was collecting the replacement was telling me that VW alloy wheels and the touchscreen stereos were the most common things walking. I know of a Passat and A4 local to me that had their rims taken on the same night, nothing special about the wheels except they would be easy to sell on.

It's difficult to have anything nice in this country.

Yeah the RNS Nav units in the last generation Golf / Passat were thief magnets. If you bought one on eBay (and I did, albeit through a seemingly legit channel), chances are it was "hot".

The latest gen radio/nav's are un-nickable... it's too integrated into the dash, the CD player / SD slots, all the brains of the unit are all in the glovebox, separate to the screen. VW won't even authorise dealers (they won't give them the unlock codes) to upgrade non Nav-equipped cars with Nav units.

So... the eBay / DoneDeal market for VW radios is dead, or soon will be!

So they've started nicking the taillights, wheels, fogs, bumpers... instead :(

Not nice hearing all this, but not really surprised. It would actually make me consider a 5 door but I had my heart set on a 3 door, and if I did opt for a 5 with the alarm it would mean a difference of about €1500 which would mean some of my options would have to go. I may consider an after market alarm, but would rather not have the car tampered with, no matter how " neat" they might be.
As a matter of interest, where did the incidents that you know of take place? I live in a fairly isolated rural area, my parking for work is completely secure and I would normally be very particular about where I would park my car, never left on the streets over night etc. I just want to be able to enjoy the car, it's not worth it if you have to be worrying about stuff like this IMO.

Lads, ye have me all worried now! Someone recommend a good aftermarket car alarm installer in Limerick!

The incidents happened on these guy's driveways overnight - both houses are in what I'd consider very safe, quiet suburban estates outside Galway.

I may be wrong but I think it's possible to spec the alarm without keyless, no? I can't understand why VW don't have deadlocks fitted (which have been in cars for 25+ years) if you don't spec an alarm.

They're taking bits off the Octys too. Two tarmacadam technicians were stopped by my neighbour in November walking up the private lane towards the back of my place where the cars kept, wheel brace in hand. Bold as brass, opened the gate and saluted him as the passed by. Another one nearby had its wheels nicked and there's a caddy van going about with the exact same wheels. Go figure, eh?

Thankfully mines alarmed but stuff like what happened your buddy makes my blood boil.

Yeah, I'll look into it again, but the sales man is adamant that it can't be speced. He asked the question at a few different levels apparently!

It must have been the other way around I was thinking. It looks like you can spec keyless without alarm now (but only on 5 door for some unknown reason). It doesn't make much sense as I had a 3 door GTI in 2013 and I did spec the alarm + keyless.
