They really are. That was my local store growing up. Used to love popping in when home and picking up some DVDs.

One would assume locations where there's a Tesco nearby, like in the Galway Shopping Centre, are most under threat.
The Roscommon store is staying open. It's a 2 minute walk to tesco.

Doubt it. Renting physical DVDs is being replaced by streaming rentals on sky store, iTunes, Netflix and the likes.

11 in North Ireland. 8 of the 11 are closing.

RoI list of stores here. I count about 76 remaining stores of which 28 will close.

Looking at that map I would guess it's the Xtra Vision only shops that will close and the joint Xtra Vision/HMV stores will stay open.

Ballyfermot is going anyway. I saw the closing down sale signage on there tonight. I had been in there this afternoon and there was no signage at that time.

I used to spend a fair bit of money in Xtra-Vision. Never once rented, but was always buying dvds, boxsets, games etc. It was my go-to place. Rarely ever left without buying something.

Then when the Xbox One was being released, they completely f*cked over their customers by forcing them to buy another game or they wouldn't get their console, then blaming it on Microsoft (even though Microsoft denied it and the same restrictions weren't in place in any other stores apart from XV). Even though they didn't do the same thing for the PS4 release two weeks later (due to the backlash and negative press over the XB1 release), I promised that after I got my PS4 (I'd already paid it off in XV), I was never buying another thing in there again. Switched completely to buying from Amazon or just streaming/Netflix.

The Xbox One release was just a pure and utter farce, and after that, I have little sympathy for their business going down the tube, aside from the employees losing their jobs.

The sad thing is you'd probably have to pay to subscribe to every streaming service just to get the same choice of films in an xtravision store.

    One word Kodi

    One word Kodi
    Piracy?
Kodi can be used as a simple streamer, that's not the implication here.

    Never mentioned piracy.
There are loads of very legal repositories and add ons.
Not my problem you interpreted it the wrong way.

Everytime I go into HMV I leave without buying a thing. Their videogames prices - the only reason I'm there - are always more expensive than anywhere but GameStop.

To put things in perspective of just how bad it is when buying physical copies of games. About 3-4 months after Assassin's Creed Black Flag was released I seen it was still €70 in Xtra-Vision (Gamestop and Argos were the same price, give or take €5) yet on Amazon for a digital download for PC it was only €14 on sale. Considering there are so few costs for distributors when it comes to digital games in comparison to physical games there are always massive savings to be made.

I hope they keep the online store. They do real cheap blu rays, its magic.

    Clonmel isn't closing.

    Clonmel isn't closing.

    Neither is Thurles.

Now's the time to ditch the Xtra-Vision part in both stores and focus on HMV. Put an Xtra-Vision Rental Machine in both stores.

Clarity on at least 2 of the Galway stores closing.

    http://connachttribune.ie/15-jobs-gone-in-xtra-vision-closure-015/
A spokesperson was not able to confirm which of the Galway stores will close, although this newspaper understands that the premises in Galway Shopping Centre on the Headford Road and beside Joyce’s Supermarket in Knocknacarra are to shut their doors.

Rural stores may be the safer, as it's broadband downloads killing it

I do it was a really good place to buy video games as they would order you in any game that you might wont.

I remember as i was younger EG a child they used to have no problem letting you pay off games in there.

They used to always have loads of WWE Videos as well to rent EG every PPV over the last few years and used to be really cheap i think 5 of them for 5 pounds or something for the week.

But with HMV and Xtra Vision there just to deer in this day and age for buying and renting i used to visit the one in kilkenny weekly when it had a standalone HMV and it was a lot better then it is now as you could allways pick up a bargain in it. Now i just look at the prices and have a hart attrick and walk out. Gamestop will go the same way.

There not always. When a new game comes out it pretty much the same in store as to download in terms of price. I'm talking about PS/XBOX. Far as I know Xtra-vision don't sell PC games so your example not really a fair comparison. There things like PS Plus & Games with gold which are a great deal. The downside with digital is you can't trade in.

The Xtra-vision store in Skerries is closing down too.

I agree, got a load more there, as before it was usually some bargain like 3 for 17 at Amazon before the sterling went up.

Was briefly in it y'day, only bargain i saw was the Love/Hate @ €25 down from €35 included was a 36 pg booklet, only i got my brother the boxset 1-4 a good while ago & another got him S05 last yr

    What's with the "stores"?

Xtra-Vision and HMV in Galway are entirely separate buildings, the HMV is a large two storey store at a prime retail location, the Xtra Vision is at a shopping center 20 minutes away.
