Free is a kind of cheaper :pac:

I think this business model would be good for blu ray though as well as games, streaming quality is often pretty crappy and I imagine most people would pay a few euro to get a high quality copy of a new release rather than wait about 5 hours for an actual HD copy to download. Not everyone has 50mb UPC.

They have to make it cheap though, no one is going to pay a price that approaches their monthly Netflix sub to watch one film. If its more than lets say €4 then its gone out of the realm of an impulse buy that you might grab while in the shop getting something else.

Yeah, xtravision nightly rentals was getting ridiculous. Wasn't much more to buy the disc to own on amazon. The issue I always had when renting was remembering to bring the bloody thing back the next day.

I got an email from Xtravision
"You may be aware that Xtra-vision went into receivership earlier this year however we are delighted to tell you that the company is officially out of receivership and we're moving the business forward."

Is this because they're after closing down half of their stores? How is that good news for me if my local store still has the dirty "STORE CLOSING" sign?

So some xtra vision shops will have a HMV in them interesting

HMV Ireland ‏@HMVIreland 46s Would u like to know which Xtra-vision stores will be welcoming a HMV shop-in-shop?? Little taster coming VERY soon...watch this space!

A shop-in-shop sounds like they'll put up a bit of HMV branding around the DVDs, CDs and games that they already sell. It's gonna take more than that to save most of these shops.

I see there are now 17 vending machines in various Spar and Eurospar stores in and around Dublin. Anyone use one yet?

Think they give out films for half the price of an actual store? Which seems mental to me.

Not really as they don't have major staff costs to cover or light and heating costs.

Brand new HMV logo on one of the windows of my local store,in comparison to many other branches this one has been thriving, mainly because it serves such a large hinterland and is the only half decent source of games/dvd's etc.

How much is a new release blu-ray from the vending machines?

Seems to be €2.99 regardless of whether it's a DVD or BluRay

Did anyone get an email voucher code for rent one get one free yesterday? I got one and tried to use it, but the machine said it had already been used! I think they sent the same code to everyone. (It was only valid for Wednesday).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,563 ✭✭✭Mizu_Ger

Just got another email from Xtravision saying the code was wrong and they have the corrected one now. Fair balls to them for fixing it!

I'm going to waste my free rental on After Earth, to see how bad it is!

Are they just in larger Eurospar shops? as i have one within distance compared to an hour away from the xtravision store.

Looks like this really is the end now.

It is understood a consultation process with staff is underway
Xtra-vision is planning to close 28 stores, with the loss of almost 90 jobs.

It is likely the closures will happen after Christmas.

The Irish Independent reports that the decision stems from the decline in DVD rentals, and puts 55 full-time and 31 "full-time equivalent" positions at risk.

In a statement to the paper, the company said it "is condensing its store portfolio to a smaller number of focused retail locations, while remaining dedicated to its investment in Xtra-vision Express; its vending machines operation, and its online channels, which are proving increasingly popular with customers".

It is understood a consultation process with staff is underway.

BBC has reported that eight Northern Irish stores are set to close.

Xtra-vision was purchased by Hilco Capital in 2013, who went on to 'dual-brand' several HMV and Xtra-vision stores here

Hate to say it, but don't think it will be long before the axe drop on HMV too. Sad to see so many out of jobs right before Christmas. The two brands sadly are two tired and old.

How many Xtravsions are in Ireland ?

I'm guesing that the big market stores will be safe and the smaller town one are in trouble ?

I would have thought the ones in smaller towns would be busier. Generally they wouldn't have the competition and alternative stores to go buy games and dvds, and probably surrounded by areas which wouldn't have good broadband infrastructure to make streaming and downloading that appetising.

Didnt they replace small town shops with Kiosks though ? I think that is were they might be moving to rather than shop

The sad thing is you'd probably have to pay to subscribe to every streaming service just to get the same choice of films in an xtravision store.

F Them, they were ripping people off for years. I remember when they first opened they charged people for not rewinding a vhs tape. And the cost of a new release became a ripoff and if you were a day late yo got charged the full fee, now there are no late fees, all you can rent for a set fee. Supply and demand in full effect here, they had it so well when they had a monopoly on the marget , its time for them to die

All video stores did, even small independent ones long before Xtravision became the behemoth it did.

There is a little over 90 stores (including the 28 to be closed and the standalone HMV stores).

So when a completely different group of people ran the company?

its just the nature of retail. when I was a kid there were tv repair shops everywhere and places to buy coal. anyone remember going into town to book a flight......

Bit harsh considering how many people are going to lose their jobs when it does eventually die.

Sad to see so many jobs lost.

Unfortunately they refused to modernise their fee structure or delivery methods. Today's announcement is no surprise. I am surprised they lasted this long tbh.

The blame lies firmly on the management at their HQ.

HMV are taking over the CD/DVD merchandising of Tesco so closures of Xtravisions was inevitable.

One would assume locations where there's a Tesco nearby, like in the Galway Shopping Centre, are most under threat.

The staff in the clonmel store are incredibly nice people so I'd be really sad to see it go :(

It's actually insane how stubborn they were with not lowering their prices, their rental ones especially. €5.25 at the hilt of the downloading era was complete madness, and only very slight reductions since then has buried them unfortunately. There's a HMV in my town and I would say I have been in there twice in 3 months. Hilco haven't done things a whole lot different from what I can see.

11 in North Ireland. 8 of the 11 are closing.

RoI list of stores here. I count about 76 remaining stores of which 28 will close.

Everytime I go into HMV I leave without buying a thing. Their videogames prices - the only reason I'm there - are always more expensive than anywhere but GameStop.
