Are you getting contrarier as you get older?

For me, the answer would have to be yes.I don't have patience in queues, fume at indecisive drivers, give out about referees, am less prepared to put up with fools at work. When I was younger, I was more placid and prepared to put up with things. Are you different?

Nah. Not a bit. Patience and understanding has come with experience.

What was the question again OP?

No, more laidback - stuff that bothered me when younger does not now; I have a lot more perspective and I'm a lot more positive.

But I am becoming less left-wing. Still left of centre and will always be, but whereas ten years ago I would have been all over stuff like Indymedia, I can't bear that rantiness now.

I used to read The Guardian a lot before too, but it has become a parody of itself.

There's no such English word as 'contrarier'.. I think you mean 'more contrary'!!!!!

When you get older it's no longer your first rodeo so you have some perspective and you see how much more **** things have become in general and it makes you contrary

Dodgy knee's, back, impending death etc does'nt do anything for your mood either

Nope, but I'm not that old really. In my experience older people only really start to get contrary when they get health or mobility issues. No point in being an auld grumpy pants for no reason I say.

There is little in life more satisfying than arriving at a point where you truly don't give a bollix what anyone thinks about you. For me the first thing to go was suffering fools gladly. No need to be mean or impolite, just a complete indifference to gob****es and twats.

Think he meant maturer. Sure, I'mmaturer.

I actually think I was more bitter and cynical about people and society in general and what motivated others when I was in my early twenties. Now I've begun to see the good in people again, that most people are generally decent, or that they are trying to be decent and just get on with their lives.

    Bollacks!

I was an angry young man. Middle aged now & too busy to be contrary.

Looking forward to being an 'Old Git' though!:D

This whole "I get contrarier as I get older" gibberish is just a lame excuse for certain people to think they now have a licence to be the total narky sh!thead that they always wanted to be

Mostly I'd say the opposite. With a bit of maturity comes the realisation that you're not special or unique or important, and that your time isn't any more valuable than someone elses, and that the things that were urgent five years ago are of absolutely minimal significance now.

I think you also spend less time worrying about what other people think of you, after the penny drops and you finally realise that they don't think of you at all.

    It's pretty liberating.

Definitely more zen overall, especially when it comes to dealing with the myriad things which are outside my control. One thing I'm far less tolerant of however is people who love a bit of drama & those who are overly needy.

I think you develop an eye for folks like that over time (and avoid 'em from the get-go accordingly).

I'm just counting down the days when my last kid leaves home.

Then I won't have to be polite to the neighbours anymore.

    Happy Days!

I've become a lot more tolerant and patient, especially when driving. If someone makes a silly mistake, blasting the horn at them won't teach them a lesson. There's enough unnecessary noise already. And it's not my job to teach them lessons anyway, especially when I'm not immune to making the odd mistake myself. In heavy traffic where the N11 merges with the M50 north of Bray, I like to see how many cars I can allow to merge in front of me before the driver behind starts getting annoyed (not many, as it happens).

In some ways, I've become more cranky though. There's a certain type of right-wing 'internet hard-man' that I just... fucking despise. Cynical, racist and/or misogynistic, deeply unpleasant, completely devoid of empathy. I'm sure there's a perfectly valid reason (probably neurodevelopmental) for their behaviour, but I just find them insufferable.

What a lovely philosophical thread this is becoming:

It's not age. It's the length of time you've been a dad I think. YES, it's kids that put you on the road to grumpvile.

It starts with giving out about the cost of ****e just cause it's got a teddy bear sticker on it. Then it's the bloody mess, when you realise you are the only bollox cleaning up anything anymore. Then the little feckers and the missus too, can't be arsed to switch off the lights, I have the fuppin' kardashians or whatever ****e reality TV on a loop on every tele in the house. is it really such a stretch to put a plate IN the dishwasher as opposed to ON it??? Then they say I am getting forgetful but that's not true...the wee gits keep movin' stuff from where it's supposed to be into places where it's NOT SUPPOSED TO BE!!!

NO, TO BE HONEST I DONT THINK IM ANY LESS PATIENT THAN I USED TO BE

NOW GO TO BED AND TURN THAT FECKIN' LIGHT OFF IN THE HALL!!!!

Becoming more conservative with each passing year. I wouldn't view that as being a bad thing by any stretch.

    We all grow up.

It would be interesting to glean the demographics from the "Trivial things that annoy you thread" over time and see what throws up
