Sent a PC to someone via Nightline couriers, arrived looking like someone had viciously attacked it with a baseball bat. PCI-E retainer snapped off and card out of slot, hard drive cage bent, brackets broken, loose screws, etc.

It was in the original case box with foam inserts and plenty extra bubble wrap, so no way it just fell over or something innocent - it would have to have been seriously abused.

They wanted 60 to ship it insured or 20 via normal shipping....couldn't afford to spend 60 euro on shipping a PC so took the normal shipping. And of course this is what happens.

Sent them an email but have a feeling they'll tell me to **** off because I didn't insure it. Not sure what my next step should be...

Sorry to hear, pain the ass.

They will likely tell you to piss off but I'd suggest doing a little research to see if there's any EU legislation on the matter. A couple of times I've been told to get on my bike by a big company, pointed to their terms & conditions or whatever but when I've gone and done my own research found them liable under EU legislation. Once the relevant information is pointed out to them they'll usually just pay.

I suppose I'll just wait for them to reply. I wouldn't mind if the case was just dented or something vaguely understandable but for it to actually arrive in that state would require serious brute force.

It was also signed for by a third party at an address some doors down, not the recepient who did not have a chance to check for damage given this scenario. Wonder would that work in my favor.

I'm never been in this type of situation but I imagine you could definitely use that to your advantage. You should start a thread in online buying and auctions. Someone there is bound to have had a similar problem over the years or know someone who has. Seriously crap thing to happen, hopefully you get it sorted.

I had to handle a situation like this about 6 months ago with DPD when I was working in a PC repair place.

Well packaged PC arrived to the customer pretty banged up, clear dents on the side of the box and this had caused a bit of damage to it, but like yourself a 3rd party person (a random neighbour) had collected the package.

It took a few days and sending on photos of the PC before and after it was sent but eventually they backed down, especially when I argued that no courier service should hand over a machine worth hundreds of Euro to a random person. They backed down eventually and covered it.

It did help we sent 4-5 packages a day with them and collected about 10 from them.

Insurance in most cases is to protect it being lost entirely, not damaged by incompetent handlers. Same way signs up in carparks saying that management is not responsible don't actually have any legal significance. They're providing a service which you pay for and unless the service is the intentional destruction of property, then they're accountable for any damage that occurs while the item is in their care whether you insured the item or not IMHO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,635 ✭✭✭Redfox25

I think the fact that they delivered it to the wrong person at the wrong address should stand to you. Your contract was for safe delivery of the item to the correct address. They might argue out of it if the incorrect person at the correct address signed for it but as this is not the case then I think you have wiggle room.
Get photos if you can and keep them.
Worst case take them to the small claims court and see how that goes. They are the group behind parcel motel I believe and wont really want bad publicity.

You had really rotten luck there Terror. Hope you get sorted and your customer too.

So it turns out that MindFactory refunded me the price of the faulty Motherboard to my paypal, when I thought they would send a replacement. Anyway before I get a replacement skylake board, I wondered if anyone had alternative recommendations to the AsRock Z170M Pro4S to go with an i3 cpu.

    Source?
If you are buying an eligible GeForce GTX GPU, system or notebook please ensure the seller is participating in the Rise of the Tomb Raider GeForce GTX bundle; NVIDIA cannot provide download codes and coupons for purchases made at non-participating retailers and e-tailers.

I don't know why, but this really doesn't seem like a massive incentive to go and buy a new 900 series card. It just seems like it would be more of a "ah sure why not?" kind of perk.

Agree. I remember a few years ago they would throw in 3-4 games with GPU, which were very new, so it was a great saving if you knew, that you will go for those games too.

One game like Tomb Raider would not push me in getting GPU.

Look like you did everything right, I learned a long time ago, as I said to someone there now. The original packaging is designed to ship the items, including TV's on a pallet, in a big block. They don't offer any protection when shipped on their own, as there is usually only a bit of styrofaom on each corner. That offers no protection for any external forces.

My advice: Stuff the box with lots and lots of balled up newspaper. It's great fro protection.

I know that doesn't help much, but hopefully someone reading will get to use it. You should also try parcel direct, much cheaper than nightline.

Yeah, it was stuffed full of bubble wrap in the sides as well. The case itself, and the external box, are perfect - they aren't damaged at all. It wasn't like blunt force or crush damage, just internal damage from being thrown all over the place I would think.

Crucial is the consumer facing side of Micron. They're the same company.

Micron own Crucial. Crucial is just their consumer brand.

I wouldn't do that for a TV. If anything impacts the side the panel is on it could push the packaging material into the panel and crack it. Probably unlikely but I'd still rather not chance it. For everything else though it makes sense.

After working in DHL for 2 years & helping to empty the arctic lorry each morning I'd say chances are if 1 of the couriers didn't deliberately mishandle it then it probably fell from the top of the pile whilst in the back of the lorry. Some morning's we'd open the lorry doors & it would be so full, parcels would spill out onto the ground. Imagine a box with a pc in it falling from the top of that pile onto concrete floor. A good 10+ feet drop will do a lot of damage to something even with average packaging.

Thats why this stuff needs to get automated sooner or later. Fact is you dont see Kiva's robots dropping a single item in a warehouse of manic activity.

If you have the build for it & the money to spend, go for it.

I'm waiting for the second iteration at least as the screen door effect is still there.

PC world has a reasonable selection.
Prices are 10-15 more expensive in store but not the worst.

Yeah, but not on display. Are there any shops that have all their mice out on display for you to try?
