They do... The Z170 Extreme 6 and the Gaming K6 are exactly the same motherboard. Only difference is the Fatal1ty branding and the Fatal1ty mouse port.

    ASRock-Z170-Motherbaords.jpg

(That's a Extreme7, which has an extra PCIe slot and 2 extra M.2 slots, but you can see the colour scheme. Can't find a small picture showing the K6 and Extreme6 in one, but trust me they're identical.. I checked! The k6 is also around 30 quid cheaper :D)

my build is all blue and black themed

When is the launch of that EVGA case. It looks a thing of beauty

Hardware Canucks had a real good look at it. Not very impressed with it either.

I'm curious to see how good the Thermaltake rip offs of the Caselab's designs are.

Am I the only one on here who has zero interest in all this gamer marketed aesthetic nonsense?

I mean i want to just buy a well spec'd motherboard and case, not a fcking Lamborghini! :pac:

Do the sharp edges on the heatsinks make it perform faster? :p

I personally normally cheap out on the motherboard and put the extra into the GPU/CPU - I don't really ask much of my motherboard, and I'd say a massive number of those who spend considerable amounts on motherboards don't either. You see it quite a lot here, peoples initial build lists sometimes have motherboards that cost as much or more than the processors they've chosen!

Those boards look great in a nice tidy windowed case though. I replaced my H81M with a H97 because I got a good deal on it and it looks better in the case, but from a functionality point of view for me the H81 was perfectly fine.

I am pretty machine same. I just go for okay mobo for given cpu, that has needed connections and ports for the rest of the system.
Buying a high end mobo is aware of time in my eyes. You pay so Much extra for something that will cost latter on same as low or mid range mobo when upgrade comes. As long as mobo does what it needs at that moment, there is no point in flashy one.

Its funny how people try to sell old generation cpu flashy mobo for 200eu, when they payed 300eu for it back in the day, but reality is that it's old socket and equivalent current gen mobo as low/mid range costs brand new 70eu...

I went for an Asus Maximus Formula VII last upgrade, got a decent & stable OC and have not touched any of the extra bits on it since. In fact I uninstalled the ROG software as it was a buggy pile of sh!te.

Good thing is it will be easier to sell it on when I go to upgrade-who knows, might even get offered a part exchange on a barely used dog house plus cash for it on adverts..

Yeah but I bet the H81M didn't have EXTREME written in full caps all across the motherboard automatically rendering it vastly inferior to the H97! :pac:

    Kyoko's comment is priceless :D
I'm so glad they made a point to put GAMING CASE on this gaming case multiple times. I kept finding myself forgetting what it was I was looking at during this video, but EVGA was kind enough to remind us that this GAMING CASE product is a GAMING CASE titled GAMING CASE. Thanks EVGA, you have solved my problems. But what if I want to browse the internet for some porn? Does this case come in a PORNO CASE option too?

    :pac:

Can't believe I put ~200 hours into Skyrim. Just spent most of my Christmas break playing the **** out of The Witcher 3 which I got for Christmas; my God it is superior in so many ways!

And now to get up for work tomorrow at 6AM, and still not asleep :(

110 hours into FO4 here (got it on the 3rd of December), work in 5 hours but in one more go mode..sleep is overrated anyway :p

I'll have a look at Fallout.

Honestly the more of the Witcher I play the madder I get at Bethesda for Skyrim being such a buggy, basic RPG suffering hugely from console-itus (from performance, gameplay, to UIs).

So I'd have to ease back into a Bethesda title :P

First stage of buying for my long, long overdue upgrade. Just bought an i5 6400 & Asrock Z170 Fatal1ty Gaming K6.

Yes, I know it's a ridiculously lush and frivolous motherboard :pac: But I don't upgrade very often and damnit I like pretty things with nice features I'll probably never use. :D

Rest of the build I'm thinking:
DDR4 - whatever is reasonable, probably Corsair.
PSU - might splurge some more on a XFX or Seasonic fully modular
    Cooler - H100i

GPU wise... I was thinking 980Ti, but I might just wait with Pascal being so close.

Case wise, it's now between the 600C and this beauty EVGA just unveiled at CES

    Thought? Comments? Abuse? :pac:

I've been doing a fair bit of research recently into PSU's and it seems that EVGA and Super Flower are also really good so you might want to keep an eye out for them too. I'm currently waiting for an EVGA 650W G2 to come back into stock anywhere as all the reviews seem to be raving about it.

I've been looking at motherboards as well and although I wouldn't go as far as getting a Fatality, I would look for at least a z170 board rather than a h170 offering. Originally this was just to get a board that could handle graphics cards that could run xfire/sli at x8/x8 but the more I read, the more I become convinced that a z board, especially for a gamer should be more desirable.

One article that I read recently that was concise was this one which basically stated that if you choose a h170 you are losing out on overclocking and the max ram speed is 2133MHz. Considering that the optimal speed is 2666MHz and also gives the best value for money, this may be worth considering.

Huh. Skylake chip bug found. I wonder does this explain some of the weirdness around benching overclocks for them.

That EVGA looks sweet, chances are it will have a saucy price tag though.

Phanteks Enthoo Primo cases are well worth a look, they have some really well thought out & beautifuly finished boxes out there. Great for water cooling if you go that way. Silverstone and Lian Li also make some excellent cases.

InWin also have the 904 if you like the tempered glass look, saw them on special a while back on scan for slightly under £150.

never played skyrim, but played the hell out of witcher 3.
after reading reviews, I don't think I'd be able to go play skyrim after playing the witcher and seeing it in all it's glory

Skyrim didn't really grab me either, I wanted to love it but I could never really throw myself into it and get lost in the world. I played about 40 hours and then just stopped.

EVGA claim that "gaming" case is going to be around the $50-99 mark as its only budget levels of plastic construction..

Saw someone else say there'd be several versions, with differing pricepoints depending on features. The one on display wouldn't be the cheap one.

The display case was the deluxe version, I think they said it will be $150

Ryan Shrout - not the greatest journalist in the world, so take his report with a pinch of NaCl.

Anyway, not the case for me personally. Prefer less bling the older I get!

I wonder what versions of Prime95 were used? Its generally a given that only v26 and earlier are even usable on Skylake due to AVX bugs practically melting the CPU into a puddle in all the modern versions...

AFAIK there's STILL no software that can interface with its new temp sensor either, making it very hard to accurately gauge its heat

What would a skykake i3 over clocked to 4.2 from 2.7 be comparable to?

You sound like you are suffering from buyers remorse! Is it still giving you trouble? Was it the GPU in the end?

Any one having trouble with the new amd soft wear? Its not holding it overclock on the GPU after I do a shut down? Any ideas?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,934 ✭✭✭MarkAnthony

There's a known issue with the R9 290 and overclocks involving voltage. The driver is holding the OC but not the voltage increase involving back screens at start up. Bloody annoying, I'm sure there are other issues.

I'm too scared to test it :( Most likely GPU, PSU a distant second, issues with the mobo or CPU's PCIe subsystems a distant third. Beat the proverbial stuffing out of most of my system now without any issue, trying to work out out to get Kombustor to run a long-duration torture test rather than its usual mini-runs. Crashes usually only start to occur if the GPU is pounded on for long periods, and the screen vomit resembles what used to happen when I maxed out my old HD4830's OC settings back in the day :o That said, tried underclocking the card a tad but its had no real effect. Push the card long enough hard enough and bad things happen :/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,307 ✭✭✭Xenoronin

Screen vomit does generally point towards the GPU. LinusTechTips used this benchmark constantly running to prove his 7 computer setup being stable. Maybe try leaving this on for a few hours to hammer the GPU?
