you really should have bargained the timing belt change into the sale CIP!

Well I'll have it over a year when it is due one. I got a brand new battery, 4 new fitted mudflaps, new tyres on the back and 7mm ones on the front so I thought I did ok. I knew it didn't need a whole lot only the Timming belt. I mightn't necessarily get it done in a main dealer anyway and I'm going to leave it till the summer it's due may On a time basis and it will be close on the milleage basis too so I'm not too bothered. I've decided to keep it longterm so a few 100 euro here and there on maintenance is not the end of the world really when overall it's perfect mechanically.

280 for the basic service which is high compared to a vag but they are very awkward to service plus parts price are high on Renault parts 15 for oil filter, 25 air filter, 35 for activated carbon pollen filter, 65 for fuel filter it's a whole unit even spurious parts are not that much cheaper and then RN0720 oil is really expensive as Mobil Castrol etc don't make it its about 70 quid if you were buying it in a motor factors add 2 hours labour as that's what they actually take to service I don't think it's that bad considering a golf would be 200 and they have a cheap paper element fuel filter and all filters are easily accessible on them.

Wowza, but if that's what it takes!

Got the mondeo fully serviced last June, air, pollen, oil, diesel filter, shell oil and a full valet for 220. I was whinging at that!

€550 for a timing belt change and the tensioners/water pump along with new oil etc plus VAT from a main dealer doesn't strike me as being that high tbh.

Its high compared to an independent maybe yes but it's not comparing like with like really.

Ye but I bet you don't have to strip half the front corner of a mondeo to change the fuel filter :pac: you can't even see the filter when you look into the engine bay it's in under the drivers headlight. Focus mk2 were always said to be tricky to do a pollen filter on I changed the one on mine no bother but the Megane one envolves removing clutch pedal amount a lot of other things. It's madness the places they but the 4 main filters in. I had budgeted around 300 euro for a service during the summer so no major surprise but Ye it's not cheap to service them.

Ye an independant is around 400 ish. Ah I'll kind of cross that bridge when I come to it but I'm always slow to go away from that main dealer as they are sound I know them they are accommodating and I know that if I'm working they would give me a car for the day no bother. The previous owner used to buy all the tyres for the car there that's how full the service history is with them it's never been touched by anyone else from what I can see.

It's a bit different with timing chains though. A timing chain should last the life of a car

Apart from the fact thats is a giant pain in the neck on low speed corners as your inside wheel will start hopping. It will shred your tyres and make the car more unpredictable at high speeds too. Terrible ideas, buy a proper diff if you want to do it!

    I have don't worry :)

I bought it like that but it was changed out!

    Having a mini depression.

Found a nice set of Escort XR3i wheels for €120 ONO. Ad is up 71 days but called him anyway. They are still there but he said there's someone coming to pick them up on Thursday. I said I can pick them up tonight but he told me he will confirm with the other guy that he's coming and call me back. He called back and told me he is going to get them.

There was a set of 15" MK1 Focus wheels with good tyres for €100. I had arranged to go and have a look at them, but he texted me saying that he sold them, about half an hour before I was about to set off.

In other news, a B5.5 Passat with a broken rear window passed me on the N4 while I was doing 100 km/h. Sadly I didn't catch him on the dash cam as I'm in the middle of some wire tidying.

And also... any tips on how to remove these screws? I believe those plates (and screws) have not been touched since they were put on, back in 2000. I sprayed WD40 on them about 3 times but I am afraid of stripping the screws.

Ah, thought you weren't sure about what head was on them. I'd just force them off. Are you putting new plates on? They'll more then likely pull out of the plastic bumper before they'd snap.

That certainly makes me feel better alright

Jam a small flat head into it. Might grip it enough to turn it

I think you will have to drill out those screws Gvidor. If they can't be removed with a screw driver, you could try using a grips of sorts as it might stand a better chance of getting a turn on the screw.

Stick in the biggest screwdriver that fits, push the screwdriver as hard as you can and turn.

I doubt it will strip. It's just a registration plate bolt

Tried flat screwdrivers and everything but they just won't turn. They're really seized up. :(

Strange. Surely the bolt is screwed into plastic or a thin layer of metal.

Didn't spot that. Barely read the description and left it at that.

    Edit. Read it again:
I must confess that it's losing a little water but always seems to be topped up for some reason.
Call or Text anytime after 1pm Sundays as i'll be out until then.

What you wanna do there is wedge a screwdriver/whatever between the plate and the car to put pressure on the plate, then unscrew.

I would do that if the screw kept turning but didn't come out, but as it is, I can't get those screws to turn at all. Would doing that help in this case?

Oh, thought they were spinning on you.
I think We used similar screws to those on number plates, they have a really coarse thread on them and rust really quickly. They also break handy enough too IIRC.
Make sure you have a screwdriver that sits tightly into the screw, just go for it. Try tightening then loosening.

You could also have a look on the inside of the boot panel and see what you're dealing with. Could just be rusted
