If it's the 'slow' ferry (i.e. one of the big ships) they very rarely cancel.

Ah yes that is Ulysses so that might be OK, I wouldn't fancy it though :)

It's the Ulysses, which I think from looking at dep/arr times is the slower one. Not cancelled yet on the website, but others are around it. It's for the sister in law, I'll tell her to keep an eye on it and maybe have a back up plan or be prepared for a bit of a wait! Thanks guys.

Jonathon Swift is the fast one - doesn't take much to cancel that tbh. Just had a look, and the Oscar Wilde (which is a slow one) has a few cancellations too.

I can't ever remember seeing the Ulysses being cancelled...that ferry operates up to Force 12...and then it's only cancelled due to passenger discomfort!!!

Crazy night here in Donegal, Wind, Thunder Hail, and the storm warning hasn't even come into force yet

Had to laugh at the image RTE are using for the storm, alls that missing from it is a certain wind battered reporter. According to the caption we're in for 20kmh gusts!

I wonder should Kerry be included in the orange warning for later in the evening ( probably 21.00 to midnight )

I'm not sure many here are able to decode the above message efficiently, could you help with the main points?

I'm nearly sure the Ulysses has never missed a scheduled service. Unless that has changed recently it definitely used to hold that record. Still though, wouldnt fancy being on it in winds up to force 12!

Is it now the case that every gust of wind is going to be named "Storm ....." ?
I've made stronger farts than the last two storms like.. The only real storm I can remember in the last 10 years was Feb 2014.

That is not true up here where I live. There have been damaging and dangerous winds. Always best to make provision rather than risk life and property.

I live in Limerick, and we have had 3 warnings already this winter and absolutely nothing to worry about. Maybe a wheelie bin knocked over. I just think this panick and warning people not to travel is really unnecessary.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,219 ✭✭✭Gaoth Laidir

The cold front should be pretty squally as it will be passing through at 35 knots, with cold unstable air behind it. We should see a high gust factor later this evening and tonight.

Maybe true if we all lived in the one spot in Limerick

I believe all this naming storms is nonsense. It's gone the same way as USA where even a few flurries of snow or a gale 8 wind creates a media frenzy. I have lived in South Donegal all my life. We get storms every winter. Several storms. It is the same for the entire western seaboard. 120km per hour GUSTS do not warrant orange alerts. Just a normal gale warning. It has left everyone hyped and daft about the weather.

    Limerick itself got 3 warnings..

At first I also thought naming these storms was silly but then when you hear the name of the storm mentioned on news/internet/weather documentaries its easier remembering the storm there talkin about because of the name so I think now yes it is a good idea..

Sure dont the germans name every high and low pressure system no matter how small now thats confusing lol

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,141 ✭✭✭✭JCX BXC

Thought we had got all of this storm complaining out of our system ugh.

Why do people insist on comparing our storms to other parts of the world? We get different bloody weather! They are used to those extreme storms there, and they would do alot less damage there than here!
