Yep that is the ferry terminal area in Mariehamn, Åland Islands where the booze ferries from Stockholm to Helsinki pull in.

Interesting part of Finland in that the population is primarily Swedish speaking and once voted en masse to join Sweden.

They also are demilitarised, are self governing to a degree, do not have conscription and have special rights within EU.

I once asked a Finn if the Swedish speaking Finns were an ethnic group. He scratched his head and couldn't answer.
On enquiry, my tour guide in Helsinki without hesitation told me that Aland Islanders would support Sweden in a Finland-Sweden football match. Asked who Swedish-speakers from Helsinki ( of which she was one ) would support she replied " Finland, and they find the question offensive." That would seem to suggest that Swedish-speaking Finns are not a cohesive group,

One of time I stopped there they were unloading wind turbines.
Can't recall where and when all the Finns picked up their crates of Lapin kulta they all had the following morning as they staggered off the ferry in Helsinki.
Twas a very interesting ferry ride. :D

There are a lot of Swedish speakers in Finland, but Aland islanders are as good as Swedish AFAIK.
Not sure if they stare less so ?

A less interesting fact is that is that my unconscious self was there in late 1996. In keeping with the spirit of the cruise; blacked out at sea, came to at sea. I was all at sea.

Did you fill up at the buffet beforehand ?
Half the passengers probably have never seen the Islands with a clear head.

What a trip, the Swedish archipelago, the glory of the Northern lights, the women, the drunken jilted Finnish Liverpool fans looking for a shoulder to cry on, the poor Spanish students and Japanese tourists who never saw what Finns can do with cheap booze, the truckers who think it's funny when the lady you are chatting up collapses comatose into your crotch.

I would highly recommend the trip, during Summer anyway, as something special.
