You don't want your harddrive spinning that much or accessed that much let alone alone the potential for the database getting segmented or corrupted, a small USB formatted through the box is a much better option.

The epg is actually loaded into memory once the receiver loads up so its not accessing the hard drive very often at all.

Mount USB. But when i go into crossepg settings it only let's me select internal flash and /nedia/hdd (1TB HDD). I unmounted and mounted and still nothing.

So I did a restart and USB showed up. No option to set it to download every night at 04:00 though unless I'm missing something

The option to set download time is on the cross egg config screen.Half way down the page, can set it for whatever time you want.

That option is on hyperion and other images but I don't see it on openvix. Now I am new to this image so maybe it's somewhere else or I'm completely blind! 😀

There are so many options out there now it's almost more difficult to get a bad box than a good one, the level of support of images is brilliant as well.

I've started to push by Solo2 a bit more recently, I've DreamPlex on it hooked up to my server, I'm also accessing it externally on my phone more than I used to as well as using live pause, it's barely breaking a sweat. I plan on doing a bit more tinkering while I'm off for Christmas to see what else it can do.

1 great addition I've added to it is a gigabyte homeplug, it's a lot better than wifi I find for accessing external stuff.

Also, although I see the point being made with the picons and not constantly having the HD in use, the HD are made knowing they could befor heavy use in systems like CCTV DVRs with constant recording

Very good point, in my world there are 2 types of hard drive, a failed one and one that's going to fail, I try to minimize the amount of constant use as much as possible, but I'm old, the quality of drives being produced now are a whole lot better now.

Just looking through last few pages and most of the links that were posted have been removed, so can anyone recommend a replacement for my AA2 that's around the €150 mark? Needs to be triple tuner but I can get the cheap USB terrestrial tuner if it keeps the price down..
    TIA

I got these when they were on offer on Amazon, extremely handy to have the 3 ports and not to lose a power socket, I've my PS4, TV and Solo2 running off it.

Oops, link would be handy http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00X59GJGC?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00

    That's nuts .
I bought the previous model for £22 last year

Homeplugs seem to have gone up alot in price in general since last year

That's 200Mbps, the ones I got are 1200 Mbps, there's no comparison in speed, also, the pass-through for the power socket is very important for me with my setup.

have u read through the tread at all,
theres talk on a number of boxes,
very few options for 150, maybe the lx2
or have look at the et8000 for few quid more
looks like a great box and good support

Have to highly recommend the xtrend et8000. Huge upgrade on the aa2 which I had for the last year. Have had no freezing etc which I was getting a lot on the aa2.

I just purchased the xpeed lx2 for the next door neighbor so actually just settings this up at the moment. Very surprised at how good this performance is also better than the aa2 and only cost €144 delivered.

    Thanks,
    BobbyT28

The major advantage the AA2 has over all other Mips based receivers is the vastly superior picture quality particularly sd channels.
Its the reason I still use the AA2 as my main receiver despite owning much more powerful receivers .

Would agree the picture quality is better on aa2. But I think I'll sacrifices the picture quality over stability and performance. From a personnel POV, I just had too many problems with the aa2.

    Delighted with the xtrend

Out of curiosity, why is the picture quality better? Is there anything you can do to make it better?

I can see all the links. Not sure why you can't see them.

Up and running on an Xtrend 8000 since last night. Despite cocking up the spec I ordered and facing a steep learning curve to get the image setup, I think its a great box. Way better than UPC.

It's on Auto be default, why set to on ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,974 ✭✭✭greasepalm

thats ok previous models/image had it set at off and box would heat up,and they must have changed it to auto now on current images.

Its basically to do with the Broadcom chipset in the Xtrend and other Mips based receivers .
Its not designed for good graphics .
The Alien 2 has an Sh4 cpu which is a different architecture which includes a high class floating point math unit and high speed bus which is the key components used for drawing graphics.

There's nothing you can really do to improve the picture quality to make it as good as the Alien 2 I'm afraid.

Its a pity really ,the Linux Mips receivers have come on leaps and bounds in the last few years and they are really very powerful receivers but their achilles heel is still picture quality ,primarily sd ,its noticeably inferior to most non Linux receivers .
