the one for sale is blue... so i'd have to paint it. if it was grey the same as my car i'd definitely have bought it :pac:

might give him a ring there, sure i'm doing nothing anyway and it is only €20, you'd spend more on a take away. i don't think i'm sold on it though, i think MC has it nailed, it's kind of too roundy on a car that has very crisp lines or something.

    I like it!

Maybe paint it satin or gloss black?

Can you get spurious air filters? I never bought one so I don't know!

absolutely, yes. possibly the most popular spurious item :)

giving this whole front lip thing a miss... i don't like it enough to tackle the Jack Lynch at rush hour on a Friday for it.

The one I have is soaked, so doesn't let much air in. Might try and dry it out first and see.

i'd be more concerned about how it got wet?

spurious air filter in most cases wold be <€10 if you are near a motor factors.

Lads what is a "spurious" filter lol?!? Vehicle manufacturers don't manufacture filters, they outsource the manufacture of these to companies like UFI, Wix, Fram, etc. Filters made by these companies are not "spurious"!

Anyone for the downfall of the E36 :)

spurious would be the industry term for parts supplied from a motor factors rather than a main dealers. I guess Noccy usually buys his bits from his Ford parts department and is wondering if it would be available in a motor factors.

I beg to see why someone that seems motor orientated would say something like that??
Yeah a manufacturer picks one of those manufacturers to make a filter for any given car....
Only the one chosen could be considered OEM.

What are the other companies filters that are on sale independently called?

    Spurious??

The word "spurious" just makes me laugh in that context, there is no such thing as a "genuine" Nissan, Ford, Toyota brake pad, tyre, filter, clutch, timing kit, etc. Vehicle manufacturers don't manufacture these parts, if you buy a clutch kit for a BMW off BMW, it'll have a clutch kit in it that will be manufactured by LuK, if you buy one in a motor factor, it'll be an LuK clutch in an LuK box. They are made by the same manuacturer and are probably coming off the same production line. How one gets labelled spurious but not the other, always mystifies me?!?

    nobody is debating that.

i told you exactly how one gets termed as spurious :) did you get it?

Yeah but the "chosen one" when sourced independently isn't "spurious"?!? Nothing in my view, manufactured by an OEM manufacturer is "spurious". This covers an awful lot of components available today independently, that are casually labelled day in and day out as "spurious", yet they are being fitted to vehicles as part of the initial vehicle build.

so to answer the mans question.

he can pick up a spurious air filter for his Mondeo, no bother :)

No the one chosen by the manufacturer isn't spurious no matter where it was got of course. But all the other 14,000 are spurious.....

My understanding of a spurious part is a non oem part. A bit like the endless mass produced Chinese clones of every other product.

So seems after all my suspension talk during the week I've got my own problem. I have the radio on 90% of the time but deliberately turn it off to make sure there are no wierd noises from the car or engine. Done that tonight over speed squeak another one squeak pothole squeak. Sounds like it's coming from the front drivers side and even with the car stopped if you put your the door opening and rock the car up and down you can here it in the front and back. So I'm not sure if it's 2 problem or one sure I suppose I'll get it checked at the service probably bushes of some description ?

On the whole spurious thing my understanding of it. We will use vw just as an example.

OE: bought of Vw in a VW box could be made by Mann if it's an air filter but will have VW stamp on it as well as Mann.

OEM: The exact same filter made by Mann but in a Mann box with no VW stamp but identical other than that.

Spurious: Any brand of filter outside of that which could be made by a manufacturer who makes OEM parts but not for that car ie a Mahle filter. Then you can also have crap brands also considered spurious.

That's my understanding of it anyway.

i'd class that one in bold as OE too as it's for a VW. I'd class a Mann filter for a Ford car as OEM, ie it's an Original Equip Manufacturer but not OE in Fords

    I'm the lad driving :)
He broke up the timing of the video ridiculously.

I got the steam going down the straight and limped in, found air in the system and bled it.
It came right and i went out for a further 20mins.
Then it happened again so the day ended at that.

The video leads you to believe i just didn't care!

Nope that is my daily/track thing :)

My "****ing b***ard" comment is upon seeing the steam for the second time :)

It's ok though it's set in motion a cool few ideas for next year!

The air filter is situated directly under the drainage channel under the windscreen. With all this excessive rain lately, water must have seeped in a gap between the windscreen and plastic channel covering, allowing it directly onto the filter. Must try and see if I can seal it somehow.

I still feel like that shouldn't be happening. I would recommend checking that the drains are 100% clear and not blocked with a few cheeky leaves somewhere!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,300 ✭✭✭kirving

Is it a Ford? I know three separate people who have had issues with the pollen(cabin air) filters causing issues with the fan because the plastic seal becomes loose.

Seems the best option is to make sure the windscreen is 110% clean, and fit only the Ford branded replacement part.

Oh I know why it's happening, the tray isnt sealed tight to the bottom of the windscreen. There are 2 screws missing (holders broke), so that's why it isn't sealed tight to the window.

You can buy almost any kind of car related screw in halfords they stock all common types you'll probably pay something outrageous like 3 euro for 4 screws but If it sorts the problem. I'd buy a new air filter regardless and try and seal it up surly the engine wouldn't run great as your filter resistance would be way up meaning you need more pressure drop to get same air flow rate. Also even if it drys out there may be weak spots in the filter caused by the water etc.

Sure it went out in a blaze of glory! (And steam...)

Was it a burst rad? I remember when mine went I drove around with it for a week wondering why I could see heat haze raising from the bonnet whenever I'd stop! I think I just closed my eyes and hoped for the best until it completely **** itself!
