Haven't seen it but I think it's that a team that had no chance eventually wins, but only after hardships. Also, I know that it makes grown men cry.

You just misremembered it OP and the scene you invented isn't exactly out of keeping with the theme of the film. It's not surprising that you would create an amalgam of other scenes or that someone else would do the same.

I thought Costner's dead father showed up, they played ball then the old black writer fella went off with the ghost players. And people queue up to come see the phenomenon. Haven't seen it for years though. Off to read the rest of the thread and google now.
