A question/experiment for the people of AH

So this may seem very strange but I'm hoping you can indulge me.
I'm asking anybody who's bothered to answer a simple question, without reading the other replies to this thread or googling etc. Straight off the top of your head.
I have a reason for asking but revealing it right now would influence peoples answers.
As this is the most unscientific experiment ever conducted, and that this is After Hours, I am fully expecting plenty of witty and humorous responses (so don't let me down) but maybe work in your actual answer if you can.
    Thanks.

So the question is: How does the movie Field of Dreams end?

    (just go with it)

    Sadly.

I haven't seen it but I think Kevin Costner pulls off a rare survival, and that's always tragic.

I remember a big crowd of people watching a game and someone pitching a ball with a big smile on his face.

    I think.

OP Here. OK, ok, if people follow the first post it won't really matter now.

This is why I wanted to conduct this little experiment:

    I think.

That's exactly how I remember the end of the film. But it's not right. I watched this film on the TV last night and was waiting for this scene but it never came. I was left a bit confused. I thought at first I had just mis-remembered the film after it being sometime in the mid 90's when I last saw it.

Then I went to the IMDB message board for the film and found this crazy post http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097351/board/flat/248273463?p=1

And now I don't know if I'm losing my mind or not.

Does anybody else have SHARED "incorrect" memories of things with others?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,760 ✭✭✭✭osarusan

Ok, clicked straight to the end, so haven't looked.

I've seen the film though, so I know how it ends:
with Costner and the ghost of his dad playing catch while multiple headlights indicate that the crowds will arrive in droves to his baseball field in the corn.

Miles of car headlights heading towards the field

He built it and the motherfcukers came

I've definitely misremembered movie scenes.Bit odd it should be shared though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,761 ✭✭✭✭RobertKK

I never saw the movie but presume it ends with telling us who appeared in the movie, the director, all the people involved in the production along with the year it was made. The name and singer of the songs.
Maybe a 'The End' at the very end, but probably not.

In a post credits scene, Nick Fury comes out and asks Kevin Costner to join The Avengers.

That's what I was thinking. I was completely ok with having the wrong memory of the ending until I saw that I'm not the only one with the same memory.

Mr Not Going Forwards mentioned the Play it again Sam effect, but isn't that more of a phrase related thing? This is a whole visual scene

Been ages since I watched it but I think the very end you see the line of car lights that are on their way to the field after Kevin Costner has a chat and game of catch with his dad.

I need to validate my false memories in some way. Ego must be fed.

TBH it's just plain weird that I'm not the only one that remembered the same "wrong" ending

Build it and they will come.

That IMDB thing is weird. Is he trying to say if you remember the made up fictional version you are a team player and if you remember the actual version you are a selfish individualistic person (with a great memory)?

His post is a little bit crazy for my liking, but there is a post on this thread, that guy's recollection as well as my own so far, that correlate a night-time game being played to an audience of onlookers (the people in the cars arriving at the end of the film).

I've remembered stuff wrong lots of times, but never found other people to remember the same thing differently, in the same way, without any sort of contact. A memory can be influenced if corroborated with somebody else, but people you've never met or known? That's strange, and interesting.

I'd love to hear similar stories

Yeah, it is really interesting alright! I suppose the falsely remembered ending is probably the natural next scene really so maybe you could argue that the people who remember it this way have very vivid imaginations to the point it seemed real?

He get depressed and drives off the pier. "Bollox this," he says. But then he realises that he can't drown, because he has gills. Yep, Waterworld is a sequel. The best kept secret in Hollywood history.

So wait, you're saying that a lot of people are imagining the next scene as they perceive it will happen, 'watching ahead' with their brain so to speak?
