I'd say it's where the term came from though; Scotland mercenaries or similar.

    In Tyrone that's a grape.

One with the tines closer together is a "perdy grape"

I wonder the reality is most words we use are Regional English words used by whatever English settlers settled in out respective areas. Most of us even in places like Clare, Tipp etc are living in areas where Irish was spoken until recently my grandfather's grandfather kind of time. Scottish mercaneries would have spoken Irish. Alot of our dialect words are from the north of England i believe./

We came from Scotland long ago anyway!
Scots Gaelic would be quite similar to Irish Gaeilge. When I was there last I was able to roughly translate some of the signs.

Our family generations back came from there. None/Very few of our name left in Scotland now, I wanted to find the family tartan when I was there but no, we'd all gone and it wasn't to be found :(

And YAY, grape grape, grapey grape grape.

Had some laugh at this missed it a few weeks ago so just to clear it up for ye here in Kerry
A fork is used to eat your dinner and you can use the fork or a spoon to eat grape s with ice cream for desert but if you want to do any work around the farm you need a pike cause it will take all day with a fork or spoon and you will get feck all done and if you break a prong or sprong then you will need to get a new pike as you will do nothing with the prong .

What if you can't find a pike, would a perch do? Or a trout? ;)
