Have a look at lian Li cases, I must say I do like them generally, brushed aluminium finish

Thanks will have a look, could go mini-itx as well. Have a bog standard H81-c board with 4460 and wouldn't mind replacing the board.

If you are going itx there are a lot more options now than previously that will take a full length card. I'm pretty sure the evga hadron dies, and there I think you can still buy the ncase m1

haven't been round these parts much in recent times.
Is the gtx-970 still best price performance card for gamers or are there newer options from nvidia?

I quite like silverstone cases - might be a bit pricey however

What's the story with replacing the motherboard + CPU on a Windows 10 license that was upgraded from a Win7 OEM install? Hearing conflicting reports and want to know if anyone has experience with this.

Afaik there isn't really an OEM version of Windows 10 anymore its more like a single user personal license so you can switch it between machines once you remember to deactivate it first

AMD's 390 beats it in price/performance & there's no newer card from Nvidia in that bracket.

I just bought a GTX 970 STRIX on amazon for €337.49, is that a decent enough deal?

Guess I'll be sticking to the stock cooler for my upcoming 6th gen build.

I ordered it on early Tuesday 2nd so it was pretty quick.

I completely forgot this version doesn't have the nice backplate the G1 has. It would look nice in my case but it's no big deal.

Arctic were quick to reassure people that their coolers won't cause this kind of damage. This is most likely because their standardised LGA115x mounting bracket is so frail it will happily sacrifice itself long before it can pose a danger to any Skylake chip.

    Just like mine did.

Guess I'll also be sticking to the stock cooler for my new build - Arctic want how much in postage before they'll send a replacement piece of plastic??!?

I find it amazing the general emphasis on 3rd party cooling, particularly in builds which don't even feature overclocking processors. It's obscene, in my opinion. I see them recommended frequently enough here in such builds - not by everyone, but by certain individuals - they treat every build, even budget, like it's a champion overclocker rig.

The Intel stock cooler is excellent all things considered; incomparably better than AMD's stock cooler, and due to Intel's far lower thermal consumption, also up to the task of mild overclocking if it arises.

I was about to sell a PC to a guy the other day, with an i7-4790 - non K model. He turned up, looked at the machine - and saw the stock cooler. His actual words 'What the **** is this? In a gaming machine? Sorry, I want a machine that won't catch fire or blow up during games".

My love for custom coolers was based on my old rig that sounds like a leaf blower with the custom cooler. That said power consumption has gone down in the past 8 years.

    That is f*cking hilarious. :D

Did you not tell him the pc blowing up would only add to the immersion in the game?
Its probably because the stock cooler doesnt look like much as its small and compact.

So is Mindfactory decent enough for components? They are looking cheapest overall for a build I'm planning.

Yeah fairly cheap. Delivery is a rip off though, its still normally cheapest though.

How much of a ripoff are we talking? Ordering essentially a full build worth of parts.

God I hate waiting on a delivery. I don't mind if it's Monday - Friday because there's reception in my apartment building that is there 9-5 Mon-Fri that will take it but I'm having to sit inside all day today now waiting. It's been out for delivery since 10am with no sign of them so far. Last time I had a weekend delivery I basically sat in my apartment all weekend waiting and on Monday found out the delivery driver had sent the item back as undeliverable when he saw nobody in reception without even trying to buzz my apartment, I have a horrible feeling the same could happen again...

Would it kill them to at least give an estimated time? I'm basically being held hostage in my own apartment for fear of missing them at this stage...

    €30 for a case
    €30 for components
    €30 for a monitor

They stack, to a max of €90

Most just get the components from Mind factory and have a look around for the case

Ah it's better that I order the parts off Amazon France then, will be cheaper in the end. Thanks!

    Good times.

Finished cleaning my old case, just had a little root-around to find some of the stuff that goes inside it.

I have now confirmed that the SSD drive tray adaptor has vanished into thin air and the old CPU cooler has had its LGA115x mount shattered.

    Great start to the build.

I've a 3.5" tray adapter that you can have if its any use to you.

Double-check it anyway. If you're spending at least €300-€400 on the innards it's usually worth going with Mindfactory, Amazon usually have good prices on some screen or case but that depends on whether you need something very specific or not.

What is everyone using for speakers? Does anyone have any recommendations in the €100-150 range? I was thinking a pair of T40's. Speakers aren't my strong point but they seem well reviewed.

Bought a pair of these (the II version, these are the III) for my brother about 3-4 years ago.

Still working flawlessly and the sound quality is amazing.

That feeling, when you test-boot your brand new PC and it spins up all the fans... and sits there, no POST, no display, no nothing. You know, the one where all of a sudden the bottom falls out of your stomach and you feel cold inside?

As Shulk would say, I'm really feeling it :(

Why? Why did I adopt new tech? Rule 1 of building on a budget: NEVER EARLY-ADOPT. I broke it and the one about not getting stuff from Germany because of RMA. Now I'm currently €700+ in the hole, unless a miracle occurs or I start trying to RMA.

In any case I fear an evening of tearing apart a system that has already driven me nuts with cabling once and testbenching it piece-by-piece is in order :(
