New Skylake build, so a DVD has to be used for OS install. USB and most forms of LAN are not natively supported by Skylake so as soon as you're passed the UEFI you're up the proverbial creek if you don't have a DVD and PS/2 (real or emulated) keyboard to get the ball rolling :p

Well, so long as you don't use Win10 which loads all the common non-native stuff when running the installer. GLHF with paying €120/year or more on your Windows "rent" in a year or so's time... :p

??? Did I miss something? Is microsoft going to start charging a subscription for windows in a year's time?

Upgrading to Windows 10 in a day I think. Possibly tonight...

After I upgrade I'll be reinstalling windows 10 clean on my 125GB SSD, what partitions am I supposed to delete when doing the clean install from media? I dont want to mess around with my UEFI settings and certainly dont want to delete ANYTHING from my 2TB drive.
Am I best disconnecting all the drives except the SSD when doing the clean install and reattaching them once the OS is clean installed?

For a clean install on the SSD just delete all partitions. I'd disconnect any drives you don't want wiped. It's very easy to click the wrong drive when in a hurry. I did it not too long ago and it was a royal pain in the ass.

Ah. I am planning on doing the clean install from USB once I complete the upgrade. I need to have a UEFI bootable USB drive dont I? The Windows media creation too doesn't do this for me from what I can see no?
Hmm. Sorry. Looks like the Media Creation Tool does actually create a bootable USB that can install windows with OR without UEFI.

Probably not; I was being cheeky :p But it is widely suspected that it will hit in 2017-8. And 2017 is 12.5 months away... so "a year" isn't a total exaggeration :p It won't be called Win10 at that point but as there's no way of preventing updates in Win10 its much of a muchness. By comparison Win7 has until 2020 before it turns into a pumpkin :p

At least I managed to clear up that awful Conduit+Trovigo ambush that messed up my system and probably caused half the Windows Update weirdness I had. Only took six hours too...

    Almost there...!

I forgot I had a "DVI Economy Special" cable from the Olden Days back when those newfangled DVI-D cables were €20-40 and their more versatile DVI-I counterparts were less than a fiver :p This is the first time I've ever had to suspect it of causing trouble. For some reason, unlike every other card forever the 380 seems to have a staggering dislike of cables that start out as DVI-I DL and end up as DVI-DL. The pliers that helped with the latter might need to, ah, "adjust" the former :3

Windows 10 for me is like a clingy girlfriend, quite the turn off.

it turns my head by talking about the amazing direct x we be having ... But all is not what it seemed. begins being nosey, forces me to do what she wants, and with the outcome of making me pay every year for opting to stay with her.

Not me.that bitch gets kicked to the kerb.

So one of the lads sent me a link to this and was wondering if it was any use. Never quite heard of the RAM and the GPU is a couple years old. 120 GB SSD in it along with a 500gb HDD, I dont know much about AMD processors so I said id ask here for him. Could anyone let me know if its any use these days? If it is, I suppose 500 euro aint bad considering it comes with all peripherals.

Mushkin are one of the best RAM makers out there.

It's still a pretty poor system tbh. You'd get a much better system specced up for 350, with the other 150 left aside for a monitor and peripherals.

Quick question guys, I just finished cloning my HDD to a SSD (on a laptop). I put the SSD into an external enclosure and used a cloning software. After it was done, I changed the boot order and made the external caddy with the SSD inside boot first. But when I turn it on, I get "Boot Drive Inaccessible".

Did the cloning fail or is that normal ? Do I need to take out the HDD and put the SSD inside the laptop first to be able to boot from it ?

I might be able to help you get a system like that :) PM me if interested.

I have two problems with a build, just want to get a second opinion. It is a asrock Z1M PR04S with an i3-6100 cpu and a OCZ 600mhz psu.

The PC turns on and goes to the UEFI screen, but the cpu fan is not turning on (The back case fan turns, the graphics card works, no difference with it unplugged). The PSU has two power cables currently, the main atx and a six pin cpu power cable. There is a third non-modular cable that I don't see a header for. The stock fan cable is in CPU-FAN1.

EDIT: I remembered I had an unused stock cooler in my drawer and plugged it in. Yay, it works, looks like it was just the shipped fan that is faulty. Which is the second time that has happened to me. It just makes me want to spend extra money on custom cpu coolers.

Secondly after boot "intel lan mac addresses are invalid in both cmos and flash" appears. I have followed the advice here and made the bootable key with the file and taken down the 12 digit mac number. But haven't tried it yet.

Basically, just checking is there something basic I haven't done for the power or could it be a faulty motherboard?

Thought you could boot the SSD from the caddy. Just wanted to make sure it was cloned fine before I open up the laptop and swap the drives.

Anyway, the SSD is in the laptop now and all is well :)

The motherboard is still not accepting the mac address, see two posts down, the mac rewriter tool gives back a message of incompatible. Which seems to match what I've read that not every motherboard can be flashed. Have emailed mindfactory, who told me to turn off LAN booting, which I did in the advanced and boot menus, which didn't make a difference. Lets see what their customer service is like.

    Sigh.

Having had to RMA a motherboard last week, I can say their customer service is very good.

Over clocking on non-k Skylakes, ASRock releasing a bios for it soon enough apparently

Can Intel do anything about this?

It's not the first time they've done this. I remember having an ASRock board that had some non-k overclocking option in the bios that allowed me to get 3 or 4 multiplier levels above the default of my non k i5-2500.

Ah, so the SATA, PCIe etc. has a fixed clock in Skylake? Comes as news to me - thought Intel wanted them all locked to BCLK for eternity due to its near-guaranteed ability to destroy OCing past 5-10% without the mult...

I was wondering what that shiny menu was for in my UEFI... or why ASRock insisted on sticking a big VRM cooler on even its budget DDR4 offerings...

I am wondering if PSU's have different length power cables. The cpu power cable doesn't fit around the back of the case and back in. Is there a way to not have it stretched across the MB. The ATX cable, can probably be cable tied around the edge of the MB. Any other tips for proper cable management with a deep silence 3 case.

I'd guess most psu cables are a standard length although you probably find some brands might be longer.
You best bet is to use a 24pin extension like a lot of people do.

Great, I'll do that, so 24pin is for the atx and 6 pin is for cpu power. The BitFenix have good reviews on Amazon, has anyone else used them?

have had a bitfenix merc alpha for 3 years now. Nice case lots of space for spare fans too. Enjoy

God that is the biggest pain in the ass, isn't it? When the cable is just literally about an inch too short, and you have to ruin the appearance of your build with a big dirty wire running right across the motherboard!

I done the total opposite , I have bitfenix Phenom, I shortened all my cables to exact length for very clean look in a small case. Huge amount or work belling every cable out before I put power back on.

Next time I build I ll just make my own cables

Yup! The case also has two fan sliders, so I have some more YouTube videos to watch to get that cabling right as well.

How the feck did we get by before SSDs. I know it's the worst example but I've had to clone my SSD on to a laptop HDD as I was selling the SSD and the new one hasn't arrived. O....M.....G.... it's sloooooooooooooow :pac:
