while i agree that the media is kinder to galway , galway really does do incredibly well with what it has , this despite being located in the area of the country which has one of the smallest populations , if you go outside galway city , the next nearest population is athlone or ennis , limerick has all of tipperary , north kerry , etc , yet its still weak economically

the city of culture thing last year was an opportunity to sell itself , they done nothing with it , i hear its governed awfully

And thats where its strength is.

If the boundary extension goes ahead into South Kilkenny down here in Waterford, then our population will get closer to Galway's I'd imagine. I remember as a kid growing up that there was very little between population-wise between the 2 cities till Waterford got left behind.

Don't find the traffic as bad in Limerick, for a small city the traffic congestion wrecks my head in Galway.

Limerick and Galway are both cool, can we not agree that Dublin is the common enemy?

Not sure where the idea came from that Limerick was unpretentious. There's a much bigger social divide in Limerick compared to Galway, with as someone said, a good deal of affluence along with a substantial working class. It likely stems from the fee paying schools in the area. They're very much separate communities and certain areas reflect that. In Galway, both ends of that spectrum are very small so everyone is lumped in together, part of what makes it good, there's a general good atmosphere to the place, albiet a lot to do with the majority of the inner towns population being students or young workers.

Limerick does seem like far more of a "city" though, even driving into it you get the sense it's bigger. As such it has more "big city" problems too. The walk from Parnell street to William street can leave you despairing for humanity. Plenty of nice suburbs though. Ive enjoyed living in both, although both become boring after a while as they are limited by size. Can see Galway overtaking it population wise at least in future, as transportation links have finally got a lot better and all the continued technological investment in the area

That divide is in Galway as well. You have the high society snobs in Taylors Hill for example and a school like the bish would also be very elitist. So im not sure what you're point is there! When people say that Limerick is unpretentious they mean that it's an honest working city that doesn't feel the need to pander to rich american tourists to the extent that Galway does!btw I've walked from Parnell Street to William Street without having any problems.Parnell Street is a dreary part of town alright but comments like despairing for humanity is a bit over the top.

There may be some 'snobs' in the area you mentioned, but I would have to agree with the previous poster that the pockets of privileged are just that - pockets - so tiny really that it is hard to say that there is a class divide that is any more palpable than in any other large town.

Limerick - I would have to defer to Limwegians :) on the issue of class divide

Going back on topic Limerick is to all intents and purposes the states third city.Galway actually was historically a town.I think it was only awarded city status in the early 1980's.Cork Limerick and Waterford have been recognized as cities a a hell of a lot longer than Galway and are Irelands three main historical cities after Dublin.

??? I think it was something like 1480. Sure its had a university since the mid 1800's and a cathedral well before the 1980's.

Limerick does feel a lot more like a city. The crescent shopping center is good. That's about the best thing I can say about the place. Went into the city center for a look around once, only went back again because there was an all you can eat asian place, actually lets make that the best thing about the city.
