Yeah that's what I assumed but it's really not working at all. Takes an age for the PC to be ready to use once the desktop is loaded and when I try to open programs the process starts and just continues for ever. It's like I'm back in the dark ages of computing.

It's literally a pc just to watch films on. That's all it does. Runs kodi. Kodi won't even load though. I'm trying a windows reset in case some settings where for the i5 and the new one doesn't like them.

Did you uninstall the i5 drivers and install drivers for the new Cpu? Maybe give a look in device manager.

Hi chaps, I have a HTPC. I had an i5 4440 in it since I built it last year which was wasted really cos all it ever does is play moves. So my son wanted a gaming PC for christmas so I bought a pentium g3260 to put into the HTPC and took the i5 out for the gaming PC. Problem is since I put the pentium in the HTPC its pretty sluggish. I wasn't expecting this. Its freezing up a lot and hitting 100% cpu usage a lot. Alot of programs aren't responding at all. Is there anything I can do about this, would reseting or reinstalling windows 10 help or do I need to get a better cpu?

If all it is doing is running Kodi then why not try a different OS?

Openelec should run well on that machine.

Well Windows should run fine on that machine too.

Corsair a good, reputable brand for PSUs as well?

Yeah most people would consider Corsair a good brand for PSUs.

Everything was running perfect until I swapped the cpu. All its doing right now is running kodi but i want it for other things too in the future which is why windows 10 is on it and why i had an i5 in it originally.I didn't uninstall any drivers when I swapped them out, didn't know cpus had drivers! I've reset windows, just have to set up programs now and see how it goes. I'll check the cpu cooler is seated right too

Sounds very strange, sounds more to me like either a hard drive issue, or else a lack of RAM would also cause that. Is Windows seeing the full amount of ram?

Definitely a software issue, or else a hardware fault somewhere. Not inherently an issue with the G3240.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,429 ✭✭✭.G.

Yeah full amount of ram still showing, nothing else has changed bar the CPU swap. I've given up for tonight, i'm in the process of building the new PC so I can make sure everything works before Christmas. Just noticed the case has no speaker, anyone know would pc world sell a motherboard speaker?

So turns out the G3260 doesn't like Coretemp. Switched to Realtemp, all good.

Coretemp would make my pc hang on bootup with win 8.1 so switched to Realtemp also.

I never use core or real temp anymore, I've kinda switched to the 'as long as the PC's still running, it's grand' way of thinking. :)

Any Resident Evil fans have any interest in a new Samurai Edge Co2 blowback pistol? Great kick off it, but also a great display piece. Would trade it for a decent processor or graphics card. Not gonna be one of those people on adverts spamming trades on adverts!

Aida 64 is another good 1..

Real temp will do the job, i only use temp monitoring for a week or two after I've installed a cpu and heatsink to make sure its all seated right and doing its job.

Was weird though cos core temp works fine on my gaming pc which is also windows 10 and worked fine in the G3260 PC when i had the i5 in it.

Anyone know where i could get a reset button and the wiring and plug that comes with it, or even the bits and bobs to make one? The case for the new PC doesn't have a reset button which i think is a strange omission.

Maplins definitely have all those parts. You can build your own switch to mount it on the desk even :)

My housemate built a great one into his desk, it even has a safety flip-switch that you have to flick up before the button to start the PC works.

Cool thanks, I'll be working beside Maplins on Tuesday I'll pop in there.

After an utterly disappointing black friday hitting everywhere, pounding f5, translating every eu version of Amazon, i just picked up an Acer XR341CK for the great price of £585. That's €240 cheaper than anywhere else i could find it so looking forward to glorious 34'' 21:9 freesync gaming now :)

Just need to find a bargain on a fury x to round things off!

Apparently there are price cuts coming for all the current AMD cards.

Looking at buying a tablet in the next while, was underwhelmed what was on offer in most stores over the last few days.

Id like to keep cost below €250. I want something with a little grunt but nothing crazy, just would like it to be quick and responsive, have a nice display and an SD card slot.

So ive kinda settled on the Nvidia Shield K1,it seems to be very good price/performance and most reviews ive looked at seem fairly positive(The new model not the old spontaneously combust one:D).

Adding their world charger(€20:() it would come to €220 delivered, also if i add the official case it would be €250.

Is there anything else i should be looking at in that price range?

Another option was the Lenovo Yoga 3 Tab,unsure about the quality of the display on it though. Also a Asus Zenpad 8 with a 2k display, but ive read it has performance issues. All similarly priced.

So any tips advice would be appreciated

2K on 8 inch screen is just spec padding.

Is 10 inchs to big in a Tablet? Anybody have one?

True, the screen was ips as well though and i have to say looked very sharp indeed. But i couldnt put up with it being slow.

Personally FullHD at 8" would be my preference from what ive seen. Would depend what you want to use it for though as well,if its for watching movies, youtube, twitch or other video content 10" makes sense to me. Other than that i think the 8" models make more sense in general. Ill be doing a bit of everything on mine when i get it so 8" seems like a nice compromise.

The worst thing about it is, that after buying the ipad air, I got used to seeing 1080p on such a small screen that now my 24" 1080p monitor looks pixelated!

It depends on what you want it for. I've had my Nexus 10 for a few years now - I'm pretty happy with it.

The best way to get a feel for the weight/size ballpark is to think of a hardback A4 notebook. It's a little smaller and a little lighter but it's much the same in terms of holding it long term (probably more comfortable to rest it on something).

It's a solid size if you intend on doing a lot of image based reading on it (PDFs or comics for example) or some light editing work (I've used it for marking up/commenting on docs but I wouldn't want to have to write something from scratch on it).

If you're looking for something to watch video on in the move, I wouldn't say there's a huge gain going 10 vs 8 or 7 inch and the weight/size makes it a little more awkward.

Not sure when they started but I remember it being mentioned on here that they still ship from the US so your orders could be hit with a huge VAT bill on import, just something to keep in mind.

Did you look at Lenovo Yoga 2? Some good prices on that knocking around.
