    - The Russian defence ministry has confirmed that its SU-24 fighter jet was shot down near Syria's border with Turkey.
    - Turkey says the plane violated its airspace, but Russia denies this.
    - Russia has said the plane was shot down from the ground, while Turkey says its fighter planes downed the plane.
    - Turkey says they gave 10 warnings before shooting down the plane.
    - Russia has confirmed that the two pilots ejected themselves, but their whereabouts and fate are not yet known.

Change the headline to Turkey, rather than NATO.

The balls on Turkey, though. Planet-sized.

That's a very serious situation to be in now.

I'm reading that they crashed in Syria and are in rebel hands.

    Turkish shootdown or NATO?

Turkey is part of the UN..... Was it a UN shoot down?

Turkey is a part of Nato.. "Turkey is a member of the Nato alliance, which has said it is ready to defend Turkey if Russia violated its airspace"

If that's the case they may as well have stayed in the plane.

Well, this has been going on for the past month.

Russia violates Turkish airspace, Turkey threatens to respond, today they followed through with the threat.

Russians might think twice now, could be best to take the long way around.

I don't see Russia rolling over on this. It's a very serious diplomatic issue and if the pilots are killed then this will get even worse.
    Possible start to WW3?

This was bound to happen at some point. Didn't expect it so soon. Things getting hairy now.

Turkey implicity support IS, well for at least as long as they keep bombing the Kurds. Erdogan is a deeply unpleasent character but I suspect he's messed with the wrong despot this time. Expect the PKK to suddenly 'find' a cache of weapons that include some Russian made surface to air missiles that will greatly enhance their fight for an independent Kurdistan.

It is, but that's not how this is being reported. Turkey specifically shot it down, not an alliance of 28 countries.

I am surprised the Russians dont have contingency plans for a situation like this, Have they not got something like a C130 that can orbit the site where the pilots came down to ward off rebels from locating and apprehending the pilots... then while this plane lends air support await some Attack helicopters to get the pilots out?!?

There could be serious ramifications from this

Will Turkey still be competing in the Eurovision this year?

How would a C130 at tens of thousands of feet altitude stop rebels on the ground from capturing the pilots?

Wasn't NATO op, don't get why you feel the need to say its NATO when it was clearly Turkey. Ridiculous attention seeking

Isn't the whole point of NATO that any attack on a member is seen as an attack on the whole group, i.e. same as attacking US or UK

Yeah but this was a member attacking an outside nation. Like the way the coalition invading Iraq didn't automatically trigger the clause and mean every nations had to invade
