They are heavy enough if they are fat enough. Look between front legs for a full rounded brisket.

    Any other signs

Cover of fat on the ribs and around the tail head

Tail head and ribs. On traditional breeds if the brisket is full then the they are fat enough I find. Tail head will be starting to round but if getting lumps your in bother. On continental you need to look at tail head and judge all in. On real good u grade heifers you need to look at ribs as well.

Always find good u grade continental heifers can take plenty of feeding without worrying about getting fat. Always try and get them to 4- here if possible as I believe you have near maximised weight gain at that stage.
Traditional breeds can get fat very quickly imo

Well a half grade! But yes you want a pillow over the tail of the friesians to get fair play on the grading. A lot of big under fleshed over 30 moth types appearing in marts in these parts over last month.. 635kg March 13 635 lads 1060. They same cattle were worth that last May? Worth a punt methinks if a lad had facilities.

I fine HE heifers can put fat on the ail head quicker than elsewhere. Often had one look like a 5 round the tailhead and come in as a 4- on the hook

Where is the best price for U+ plus cows at the min. I have 1 lim fit for killing and 1 blue a couple of weeks away. Both are up on 900kg. The last report I seen showed that ballyhaunis was quoting 3.70 and ashbourne 3.80.

Ballyhaunis is reasonably close to me but Ashbourne isn't. Wonder do they have any agents in north mayo.

sent a few to factory yesterday, a 14 year old angus cow. A 24 month old pb angus heifer - had a peg leg and not suitable to breed with- and a 2 yo angus x bullock that never grew. Had 3 calls from factory yesterday evening, thought there was something wrong with one of them. They wanted to know if my dad was QA , he didnt bother anymore as he would be sending very few eligible animals to factory, so he is getting 3.90 rather than 4.00 for the heifer. she graded u. Will post up what they made when we get it. Sent an old fr cow last week that did the splits many times, straight from parlour, got 450 euro for her, better than having to pay the knackery

Heard 3.40 for R's, do you see any chance of an improvement in cow prices before Xmas?

Better off in the mart than 3.40 for rs I'd say, maybe but mightn't be anything to hectic, lot of lads drying off now/weaning throwing cows at factories
