If it's permanently on then you are supposed to use motion detection to turn on the camera after the vehicle moves. The only problem with this is that it might drain a weak car battery resulting in a non-start.

What you need to do is get yourself a fuse socket tap and tap into the fuse that is connected to your radio which only turns on when the key is on accessory.

    Something like this: http://www.ebay.ie/itm/2-Add-A-Circuit-Fuse-Tap-Piggy-Back-MINI-Blade-Fuse-Holder-ATM-APM-12v-24v-volt-/180735824927?hash=item2a14b1d41f:m:m0a7lBVYcXWO-uV4HseLfRg

This will allow you to plug it in instead of a fuse and then put 2 fuses into it, one for the original circuit and another for the dashcam.

You could also splice into the lighter socket wiring if it turns off when the car is powered off.

Hmm thanks for that. My Radio switches on even when the key is out of the ignition.

Does anybody here have a dashcam installed on an Audi A4 by any chance? (B6 model)

You need to fine a fuse/socket that only comes on with the ignition, in most cars this would be the cigarette lighter, but some cars do have an 'always on' gig lighter socket.

I drive a few Audi's as rental cars, and from memory, I believe the cig lighter socket is only energised when the ignition is on.

Yep, mine is an always on cigarette lighter.

I have it wired into the rear wiper fuse slot, (my car is a saloon so it doesn't actually have the rear wiper) this only comes on with the ignition

Your radio should still have an ACC (accessory) wire going into it which goes on when you put the key in.

You can wire this to a relay, which is like a switch to allow current to flow through another wire. So you cut the dashcam power wire, run it through the relay and also run an ACC lead into the relay.

Sounds like the camera settings then, which seems odd, as most dash cams by default turn on and start recording once they receive power!

What type of camera is it? can you post link?

Do you think this would be a good enough card for the 0806?

I don't see why not. I followed tech moan's advice on his youtube channel for card recommendations. Due to some giving errors but I think most have been addressed with the 0806.
If unsure check the dashcamtalk fourms as they will have lengthily reviews about the 0806 and sd cards used in them.

If you get a chance, link a video from the camera so we can see the quality,

I got an £11 camera a few months ago (should be a few pages back), and it is grand for the money. I just use it for when I'm in a rental car.

Thanks. Used gearbest there. They have the 0806 back in stock in their EU warehouse. Also used DPD parcel wizard for the free shipping on first 3 orders. So working out 75 euro in total.
Cheers for the headsup, I ordered from them...... £57 delivered with insurance

Would a class 10 card be the option for the 0806. Picked one up last week but haven't opened it yet. So not even sure of there's a card in it. But I've read of issues on various classes on here.

Class 10 seems to be the way to go alright. I don't think they have a card supplied as standard with the cam.

Anyone able to advise on the best place to pick up a decent camera?

I can see the Mini 0806 mentioned a fair bit, but can't seem to see any links to purchase? Would I be able to pick this up and throw it over to any old auto-electrician to have it fitted?

Also, is the 0806 discreet? I'd be planning to leave it in the car permanently (also, does it have good night vision?). I've been mooching through the thread. It's possible im getting bad luck, but im finding plenty of people recommending the mini 0806, but can't seem to find m/any links to it.

Seller doesn't deliver to Ireland? I presume it's a parcel motel job? (never used them so would have to give 'em a bit of googling).

Is that what I'd need to do though? :)

    I got mine from there.

A word of warning, the permanent sticker mount is strong.
I made the mistake of not mounting the camera within the windscreen wipers range, so it was on an unwiped section of the windscreen.

I partially cracked the plastic mount trying to get it off to reposition it.
So be careful where you place the plastic mount.
Although some condensation in the car loosened the adhesive one morning, but it recovered it's strength when dry.

I recommend the free http://www.registratorviewer.com/whatsnew_en.html Windows Application to view the video footage. It's class, shows your position, the G-sensor graphs, allows you to click on any point in your journey on the map and it will jump to the video position there.

    Cool, thanks for the advice.

Does anyone know would it interfere with a TollTag? I plan to mount mine near the TollTag but a little worried it will interfere.

    No, not at all,

I have an eFlow tag next to my 0806, and there is no interference at all.

I've started driving 80mins + on my commute with the Eprance mini 0806.
After about an hour I get low battery warnings and shutdowns.

Not sure if the Honda Civic's power socket adapter is underpowered to both run and charge the Mini 0806 at the same time for long periods.

Or if the 3m+ cable that comes with the 0806 has too much resistance and a shorter cable would deliver more power.
Will have to experiment with different usb cables and cigarette socket adapters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,180 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

Seems odd, a cigarette lighter socket should have more than enough juice for a dash cam,

(I'm running an 0806 & an 0801 as well as an iPhone charger out of the 1 socket under the arm rest, and I never have any issues)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,719 ✭✭✭Hal1

I have 2 3 metre cables soldered together and plugged into the lighter socket. I never had (touch wood) any issue with it. It's like that for the past 2 years.

The info im looking for is probably already within this thread already but would appreciate some thoughts.

Im looking for a dash cam with reasonable image quality and that will pick up a number plate in the dark. However I am really constrained financially at the moment.

Driving home today and got a serious fright. A hire car ( i suspect) litterally just pulled out in front of me and I had to slam on the brakes, my bumper touched the rear passenger door but thankfully no damage.

I put on my hazard lights and went to get out and check for damage and speak with the driver and he just sped off. At this stage i didnt know there was no damage so drove after him hoping to get a number plate but he broke a red light which I wasnt willing to do.

Yikes ...close call then. Whats your budget? The Aldi one coming out in their stores Thursday is €40. To be honest going too cheap can mean getting a really poor quality camera and you wont see anything in them.
