Not sure what to think of this.

Those protesters are completely out of line. I'd love to see them trying to take that attitude in other countries where their police force will whack you at the smallest amount of indiscretion, and without warning as well.

You can see that guy is trying to take the Garda's notebook, which is bang out of order. Could the Garda have drawn the baton and warned he's not afraid to use it? Possibly, but would the protesters have backed down?

I think the second a hand is put on a Garda is when the baton can be used. They have zero protection against things like this.

The world is full of ifs and buts. The baton struck him exactly where it was meant to and thats on his shoulder

......o that's nice. The nice man in the uniform only swung a fairly hefty steel baton near a guys head. Totally comparable to somebody just avoiding an accident.

    It was.

I also have the question the most recent video posted. Where the person who posted the video brags about them "successfully preventing a repossession". Surely someone who prevents the sheriff from carrying out a repossession is a criminal? The public shouldn't be getting in the way of the law and not expect repercussions.
They believe that the sale is repossession of the property and any subsequent attempt to sell is is illegal.
Some of those leading the revolution are former property developers who own money and don't want to pay it or lose their properties.
Because they disagree with it and they're Freemen!

Maybe its just my generation, but when the Guard put his hand on the guys arm, the look of the young guy, saying "get your arm off me".

I would never have spoke like that to a Guard.

In some ways it is understandable. There is no moral authority out there. The traditional moral pillars within society have crumbled - the church, politics, banking, law, etc. People have nobody to look up to apart maybe from some talentless pop star.
Many parents are not taking an active role in raising their children to achieve their best - some are destined to be nothing and be of no benefit to society on the whole.

If that baton had been six inches higher it would have been the end of somebodys world, you can be sure of that.
If it have been an Uzi it would have been the end of the room.
    But it wasn't!

    Is it steel?
That would be a poor choice of material given the weight compared to alternatives.

Its not the guards fault that the shoulder is near the head.He only hit where he was trained to hit.

    RTE news. "Alleged incident"

    OK.

We live in a country with people who have been caught drink driving but because they don't have a legal conviction against them due to a technicality, it's grand.

Jesus, after posting this morning and reading some of these comments the snobbery on boards has surpassed that of the journal, the blanket assumstions some of you make about people, oh he's a water protester must be a scumbag on the dole.

It doesn't matter what you think of any of the protestors the fact is the guard shouldn't of hit him like that, and saying that it hit his shoulder, a smack on the shoulder doesn't knock you down like that, you're not watching a football match it's real life.

Not even gonna comment here again as most of the comments are from trolls anyway and the word 'brigade' seems to validate any argument

"If I was a guard I'd be doin more of that"

They must have all got the day off work to go and protest , Imo the cop was dead right , he didn't give them half enough of it

    Very unfortunate.

The Guard clearly lost his cool after, I think, holding it for an awful long time. That scenario, indoors, mixed among the crowd, feeling jostled and taunted, was always going to end in tears.

He seems to have reacted badly just after a woman with purply jacket leaned in to question his actions. His arm seems to have pushed her a bit, possibly not on purpose, and she lost her footing and started screaming. Screaming disproportionately it must be said. Then things kicked off and the Guard lashed out. Maybe at anyone or maybe at something prior. But hit a non-threatening civilian a life-threatening blow. I actually feel sorry for that Garda (not as sorry as I do for the victim, remotely) but despite showing calm under great pressure earlier, he snapped and his right to carry a weapon should be seriously questioned.
Who would be a Guard? They can't win. But that doesn't mean we should sanction a Garda losing his cool with easily fatal consequences.

I'm all into protest, but its got to stay respectful also. Trying to intimidate Gardai in a stressful situation is not very clever. Who gets hurt? The weak. Not the mouths.

The chap deserved a slap of the baton. You can see how it looked a little over the top but he was surrounded and being pushed (by a pile of people behaving like morons, I might add).

You say a smack to the shoulder doesnt knock you down like that.It doesnt help with people pulling out of you which can clearly be seen 3.30 mins in.

Is football not played in real life?

I hope your not labeling me as one of them trolls as i believe ive gave very balanced arguments

People of the 100,000 plus jobs that we hear this government brag about are on between 15/22 hours a week if they are lucky, on job bridge, or Fas to keep them off the live register. Sure they have plenty of time on their hands to protest. It is easy for the smug and well healed to call them spongers. Get a life the protest's are only starting.

Nothing really sarky about that comment surely.I'm sure most "professional lawyers" would know that there is no need to quote the full section when someone is being arrested so more than likely they were just amateurs spouting off verbal diarrhea

It just showed the guys mindset from the start. Say the other gardai were less than impressed with his carry on

i could pick out 2 faces in the mob that i know from around that have never worked a day in their lives , must be a coincidence that all the rest of them had time of this morning
the '' amateur lawyer''who was asking the guard to quote the regulation , I wonder is he able to quote the regulation or act that made it an illegal sale

Let's hope this conversation can include a real fundamental issue here - Garda pay and the lump sum culture - this needs to be explored - too high, way too high.

Certainly a sinister h'attitude developing here that needs to be nipped in the bud. A few coughs to be softened.

Your honour, one of the protesters reached in and grabbed my bollix from behind, I drew my legally held baton, turned and hit him.

Look at the video from behind, the protester who got hit was definitely bending in and reaching forward. If he was, as I suspect, grabbing or nipping then he got less than he deserved. If he was part of a peaceful protest then why was he in on top of the garda? leaning down behind him. Chanting peaceful protest while you bump, elbow and push a garda is not a peaceful protest.

Bad form on the address. Nobody can assault a sick old person like that and expect to remain unnamed though.

You've mixing up two people I think, if you're the one that was talking about Parksinsons earlier - the elderly man who got knocked over was the other side of the room and I don't think it's clear what happened to him. That was the mention of Parkinson's in the video. The chap that got belted was also an older man, but he wasn't the same one.

These auld lads shouldn't be at a protest and be so aggressive if they can't take a tip of a baton.

Bit like the harpy females who push buggies and prams to this kind of thing and stop ordinary workers from providing for their families.

Cop yourself on my friend !

Yes, assaulting a Garda who was attempting to carry out an arrest was a silly thing to do.

There was no assault on any of the Gardai. There was pushing and shoving as a result of the man who was being arrested leaning back into a large crowd in a small place. I believe you were the first one to say that the man was attempting to steal a notebook and it's now accepted as fact in the thread, but nothing of the sort took place. I hope you withdraw that statement after reading this post.
Are you aware that there is a handcuffed man at the Gardas feet?

People are really seeing want they want to in this. The only person at that Garda's feet was a girl that he had just pushed over. There is no handcuffed man there. The handcuffed man was being dealt with by two other Gardai and was on his feet and being taken away by them when this Garda launched his vicious attack. Open your eyes.

    Some facts:

At 3m09secs into the video you will see that the Garda is standing above the two other Gardai who have now taken over the arrest. The Garda takes out his notebook and holds it in his right hand. A girl is standing watching. She is speaking but she is not shoving anyone. At 3m27secs the Garda in question pushes her with his left arm and she falls backwards. At 3m28secs she grabs the man's arm who is standing between her and the Garda to try and stop herself falling and in turn he instinctively interlocks the Garda's arm to stop himself falling.

    Crucial point:

At 3m34secs the Garda switches his notebook from his right hand into his left hand with the man is still hanging on to him. The man would have had to have been psychic if his motive for grabbing that Garda's arm was so that he could try and take his notebook for the simple reason that the Garda wasn't holding the notebook in his left arm when the man grabbed it. Therefore it is just deflective rubbish to say that he was attempting to take it.

At 3m37secs the Garda then takes the notebook back from his left hand and pushes the man backwards as he does so. The girl manages to get backs on her feet at this point and the Garda puts his notebook away. Then, from 3m38sec until 3m46sec (a full 8 seconds) we see the man now hunched BEHIND the Garda, looking at the ground and not touching anyone. The Garda then removes his baton, turns around and starts to beat the man about the head and shoulders for having the audacity to try try and prevent himself from falling after being shoved by that Garda.

To read people trying to defend this man's actions is disgusting. Even if he was trying to take a notebook (which he wasn't) it still wouldn't excuse his actions. These people most likely are all a bunch of annoying ass hats, but the rule of law must still be adhered to nonetheless, especially so by members of our police force. Like I said before, I hope he is charged with assault. It was unprovoked and could have resulted in serious injury. Hopefully he will end up with a desk job as I don't think he's fit to be dealing with members of the public in such situations as he clearly does not have the temperament for it.

This man was needling and pushing the garda with his elbows, shoulder and even his arse for a sustained period of time. It cant be seen in the footage there, but there is apparently other footage of it from another angle.

I think i'll wait to see what else comes out about it before i make up my mind if the garda was right or wrong. But that was definitely a crowd of wild animals as far as I can see from that video.
