Its a well known fact that only approx 15% of all monies raised for charity actually reach the people in need.

The rest is paid in wages, big salaries, advertising etc.

Even the shop in Crumlin hospital was skimmed.

If you're going to donate, donate direct.

They are not defrauding anything or stealing the money. They are selling scratch cards.

And for those of you who get all the news from facebook, it might do no harm to read this:
    http://m.independent.ie/irish-news/row-erupts-between-rehab-and-justice-minister-alan-shatter-over-scratch-card-sales-29938562.html

If they are calling them charity scratch cards and keeping the vast majority of the money themselves , it's defrauding.
Just because others do it, doesn't make it right.

I see nothing wrong with this. Ryanair says they'll give money to charity, gives money to charity. So they actually go through with it.

It's more than can be said for numerous other companies. Hell, most charities, even.

Everyone knows scratchcards are a scam.

Oh I see you've mastered the art of placing text in quotation marks. Well done, you!

If 15 idiots per flight want to buy scratch cards to help fund the model that gets me dirt cheap flights then roll up, roll up.

Glad to see there are some things you object to - just not scamming charities.

If people haven't learned anything from the whole Rehab scandal then they really need to wise up about charities in general and be a bit more judicious when parting with their money. Having said that, I think most people buying these tickets just want to win some money, charity is the least of their concerns. You have to be over 18 to buy one therefore old enough to be informed and clued in.
In the UK charities are coming under increased scrutiny with Kidscompany and the below:

Facebook poster completely misunderstands probability shocker.

    :D

No need to be quite so sneery about public understanding of probability.
If its as claimed here and they run lotto for 125 years there's about a 65 % chance someone will win it I think. It doesn't sound great to me really.
Anyway I suppose that's capitalism for you. You need your eyes open even when people are "collecting for a good cause".

    Ha.

Scratchcards are a scam in general. The very theory of it is. Do you freak out when you're in a shop and see them? What about with the Lotto, who says they donate to charities and yet keep the vast majority of money? Or the charities that say they help people, but do barely anything?

Ryanair says that money will be going to charity. Money goes to charity. Where's your issue?

Have a look at the YouTube video of the Ryanair sales pitch of the scratch cards (posted earlier). He clearly says the money is going to charity.

It's probably no worse than Goal or Concern or any of the other charities that only give a small amount of their revenue generated to the actual cause they're collecting for.

I have flown countless times with Ryanair and have never bought a scratch card and have never seen anyone else but one either.

A tiny fraction goes to charity. That means the vast majority goes to Ryanair. Is it that difficult for you to understand?

The Lotto are legally obliged to give 50% I think to good causes . Don't think they do charities.

    And money goes to charity.

You are deliberately using semantics. 'Money' goes to charity (i.e. whatever % Ryanair decides) is not the same as 'the Money goes to charity' (i.e. The money you spend on the scratch card goes to charity - which is what Ryanair says in their sales pitch).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,519 ✭✭✭Sunny Dayz

Do people actually buy these scratch cards? I've never seen anyone on a flight buy them. Anyone here ever buy one.

Like Ryanair for the cheap flights but from the moment you book your flight to when you step off the plane at your destination Ryanair are constantly trying to sell you something. I just say no to everything.

You're deliberately using semantics more than anyone else. This is a pointless debate, because neither of us are going to move from our opinion and will just go nowhere, so I'm going to stop replying to you. If you want, we can continue this in PM, because otherwise it moves from being an open debate to a conversation.

Was on a horrid flight to Mexico with Thomas Cook and they were near militant with pushing scratchcards , went around about 8 times and saying they would take any currency or a limb or anything.
So Ryanair are not the only ones at it.

Feel so sorry for the attendants who just want to do a job not pester people for profits , you can just imagine some nazi type middle management with a performance chart for scratchcard sales insinuating that jobs are at risk unless the board can increase their obscene profits , be stealing the eye out of your head next
