Just came across a very interesting interview with Paul Morley, talking to Jarvis Cocker about the new Grace Jones book (which he co-wrote).

Turns out that 'Slave To The Rhythm' (great song) was originally written for Frankie Goes To Hollywood, and was set to be the follow-up to 'Relax'.

However, Frankie wanted to write their own material and said no. When Island Records' boss Chris Blackwell asked ZTT head honcho Trevor Horn to produce her, he gave her the song. And, hey presto! One of her greatest records :)

I hadn't heard Siouxsie's version of This Wheel's on Fire before, very nice.

There are more Dylan covers than I would have thought.

To be a pop star in the 80s waz it mandatory to have a weird dress sense or even a non existent idea of fashion

Cant believe they shoe horned the feckin x factor in to the last covers show

I quite enjoyed that Pat Shortt archive show, a nice selection of clips.

Most bizarre part - Someone from the Miami Showband interviewing Twink and her dogs, before he introduced The Jam doing Down in The Tube Station at Midnight (Their only ever performance in RTE)

Hi, I was reading somewhere that the UK channels have a Gentlemen's agreement not to put up anything new when Children in Need or Comic Relief. This is such a week so no TFI Friday and nothing new on BBC Four (they didn't need any excuse, in fairness)

But there is a new Dave Gilmour Doc on Saturday and a few other bits and bobs. Rod Stewart, Beatles, Chaka Demus & Pliers - something for everyone

    Wednesday

8pm The Nation's Favourite Beatles Number One (ITV/UTV Ireland)
Two-hour special celebrating the songs of one of the most successful bands in chart history, including the stories behind tracks that changed the world, from She Loves You and Hey Jude, to Day Tripper and Let it Be. Plus, the results of a poll to find out which of the foursome's chart-toppers has been voted The Nation's Favourite Beatles Number One

    Thursday

8pm Tom Jones & Rob Brydon: One Big Night (BBC One)
Two powerhouses of the Welsh entertainment world, veteran singer Tom Jones and the multi-talented funnyman Rob Brydon, join forces for a spectacular night of music and comedy in aid of BBC Children in Need. Recorded at Wembley Arena, the concert pays tribute to Tom's remarkable career, with performances of his greatest hits, collaborations with musicians including Laura Mvula, Evelyn Glennie, James Morrison and the Shires. Rob plays host to help Tom look back over the years, and there will be comedy sketches - including Steve Coogan and Rob in a special Tom Jones mini-episode of The Trip - plus appearances from David Walliams and Jessica Hynes

    10.30pm & 1.30am Brian Pern: A Life in Rock
(S2 Ep 3/3) The musician records a charity record in aid of bi-polar polar bears, but there are conditions from his label about its content. He must make the album commercial, Christmassy and full of cutting-edge duets with big stars - none of which comes easy to him. Meanwhile, Brian's health problems also come to a head after he learns he has invested millions into an aggressive tax-avoidance scheme and HIM Revenue & Customs wants its money back. Spoof music documentary, starring Simon Day, with Anna Maxwell Martin and Roger Allam. Last in the series

11.30pm The Windmill Lane Sessions (TG4)
Music performances filmed at the Windmill Lane Recording Studios in Dublin, continuing with Mundy, Carol Keogh and Aslan

Midnight Later With Jools Holland (Old) (TG4)
Metallica return to the Later studio for the first time in 12 years to showcase songs from their album Death Magnetic, and Tennessee four-piece Kings of Leon perform tracks from their fourth record Only by the Night. Carla Bruni-Sarkozy also performs, along with VV Brown and American singer-songwriter Nicole Atkins

    Friday

    7.30pm Sounds of The Seventies
Archive performances by groups and solo artists from one of the most energetic and exciting decades of popular music, featuring Carpenters, Bread, Charles Aznavour, John Denver, 10cc, Bellamy Brothers, Exile and Dr Hook

    Pat Shortt's Music from D'Telly (RTE 1)
Ep 2 Rarely seen performances and much-loved songs from six decades of RTÉ music television production.

9pm & 12.25am Top Of The Pops 1977: Big Hits
A selection of highlights from the pop show's 1977 editions, including performances by Rod Stewart, the Jacksons, Queen, the Stranglers, Brotherhood of Man, David Bowie, Bob Marley, Baccara, Heatwave and Elvis Costello

10pm & 1.25am Rod Stewart Live at Hyde Park
A concert by the singer that closed Radio 2's annual Festival in a Day, held in September in London's Hyde Park. Featuring a selection of hits from his back catalogue including Gasoline Alley, Angel, In a Broken Dream, The Killing of Georgie (Part I and II) as well as Faces classics including Ooh La La and blues standard Rollin' and Tumblin'

    11pm & 2.25am Imagine: Rod Stewart - Can't Stop Me Now
The veteran rocker invites Alan Yentob to his LA home to conduct an interview, in which Stewart looks back on a career spanning almost 50 years. He discusses working with acts like the Steampacket and Jeff Beck in the 1960s and his time with the Faces, whose offstage antics became legendary - as did the frontman's affairs with a string of famous women. His solo career propelled him to superstardom with songs such as Maggie May and Sailing, and while the 1980s proved to be less successful, his constant reinvention has given him a lasting career. Having more recently become known as a singer of American standards, he talks about recording Time, his first album of new material in almost 20 years

11.40pm Later With Jools Holland: Duos and Duets (BBC 2)
Jools looks back through the programme's archives to select performances by classic and contemporary duos, including the White Stripes, First Aid Kit, Hall & Oates, Rodrigo y Gabriela, the Civil Wars, Chaka Demus & Pliers, and Slaves

    Saturday

9.45pm David Gilmour: Wider Horizons (BBC2) Programme of the Week!
Documentary offering an intimate portrait of the former Pink Floyd guitarist, as he returns to his solo career after a nine-year break with the release of his fourth album, Rattle that Lock, and an accompanying world tour. The film provides insights into Gilmour's professional and personal life, as he muses on the events that have shaped him as both a person and a musician

11.10pm The Imelda May Show (RTE1)
The singer-songwriter is joined in the studio by grammy-award winning artist Sinead O'Connor, musician Hozier, rock-group the Strypes and singer Paul Brady for chat and live performances

and repeats of all Friday's programmes on BBC Four

Sky Arts has Duran Duran all Saturday night and theme music of the week is from Kelly's Heroes! (Channel 5, Saturday 6.10pm)

Episode 1 seems to have dissappeared off the RTE player very quickly, though episode 2 is listed as being up there for another month.

I really wanted to the Tom Waits Late Late Interview on episode 1 - have I any other options?

I don't think that interview was in Episode 1, to be honest (unless I missed it)

Just checked, that show seems to be back up on the RTE player

Thanks, that makes sense now - I thought there was an earlier episode from late October, but apparently not.

In addition to the above the red button features Jeff Lynne and ELO (and we have to called them now!) in concert at the BBC, its on a loop pretty much round the clock for the next 24 hours! Dunno how long it is.

I enjoyed that Nation's Favourite Beatles Number One programme during the week.

Any idiot could make a song heavy two hour show about the Beatles, but the contributors were well chosen and mostly made interesting comments. They had some never seen outtakes from early Beatles videos which showed the lads mucking around which were good fun.

It was a million times better than most ITV music programmes (I know). Repeated at 4.30pm tomorrow (Sunday) on ITV (but not UTV Ireland, boo).

Sky Arts has all sorts of Status Quo on Saturday Night if you are into that, and movie action comes in the form of 24 Hour Party People (The Tony Wilson/Factory Records Story) on TCM (Friday 11.05pm). The biggest Mercury Music Prize upset still has to be in 1994.

In a year of Blur, Pulp, The Prodigy and Primal Scream, the winner was...

see also Roni Size beating "OK Computer" and the Chemical Brothers in 97; and Gomez beating Massive Attack the following year. Mystifying decisions in hindsight.

Haven't seen tonight's effort yet but I liked the first two.

It moves quickly enough that you don't get bored if something weak comes on. And they have found some gems in the archive.

Health warning: Ep 2 featured a performance by Neil-you-know-who :(
