I was at a meeting on crime last night and there were some good points made.
I thought I'd share them here.
Most people have camera phones now if someone comes into the yard who you don't know, take a picture of them. If they're legit they won't mind.

We as farmers are used to tagging animals. In the UK they are electronic tagging repeat offenders so the authorities know where they are. The legislation is passed here for it so the government just have to implement it.

The number of guards has reduced big time in recent years. But I think more are being brought back into the system.

Have alarms on houses as it's a bit of a deterent. Take pictures of your machinery and have some sort of unique id on it code, number, etc.

They were some of the points raised.

Wonder would one of these be any use on a tractor or bit of machinery.

Is it much bother to get a herd number. Have just under 20 acres (10-13 acres of it is alright land) and would like to get into dry stock as a hobby as much as anything.
No it is not. However you must have a cattle crush and some sort of shed/house in case an animal gets sick.
Link below will open Dept webpage and you will see pdf files that you can print off. The second one is the application form and the third one is an information leaflet. When you have your crush & shed set up send away the application form to your local District Veterinary Office (DVO). After a couple of weeks a Dept Vet will come and inspect your facilities for approval. There is no cost involved.

Also if you keep any other livestock including poultry ensure that you have a herd/flock number for them as well.

I'm open to correction on this but I think that this at the very least has to be covered.in a perfect world a dung shed. I know that it can only legitimately be stacked in a field from the 15th of January .

Be a help alright. But you'd want it well hidden the way they wouldn't see it.

A mini digger (5 tonne I think) was stolen from neighbours garden last year in North County Dublin. According to the Garda the guys whole stole it cut the GPS tracker out of it as it was moving on the trailer. The GPS tracker was found in the ditch near Keelings Food Central, St. Margarets.
The Garda were able to use the cameras at Toll booths and knew it had headed South.
The digger turned up on a building site in Cork about a week later and was returned to the owners.

Having trouble finding Autumn calves in heat, no problem when in field but wanted to hold & not have July calves.
1 of them has slime on her tail, but heat seeker is not red.
Is she coming or have I missed?

Coming, I'd say. I'd be keeping a close eye on her next few days.

Have a look at "Castaway" on 3e, it's on now and always makes me feel better. Hate the start and end but the bit on the island I love, wouldn't mind a spell on a warm island on my own to clear the head.

Yup . But I'd be more worried about the trafficability of the ground now rather than being a few days over the deadline.

OH and I were in a stupid panic to clean out the last of the calf bedded sheds and get fym out two weeks ago due to the deadline - we were busy/tied up with other stuff and neglected the house keeping in the last few weeks/months.
He has a side slinger and we were going to hire another one from the local agri store for me to run. The weather turned and it pissed rain so that put the death knell on travelling to the fields.
I will clean the bedded sheds with the 50B on Thurs/Fri (hopefully) and store the dung on the concrete apron beside the lagoon so it can drain into it over the winter.
BTW I despise calendar farming. Look what is happening with GLAS1 at the minute. Our Advisor reckoned that we should qualify for the first round yet here we are on November the 3rd and no word.

    Bad day yesterday
Was selling a march born bull in the mart but got a call to say he was never tested for TB. The herd test was in Feb before he was born. Never even thought to check his card. Haulier had left the mart so had to come and home borrow a neighbours trailer. So myself and dad set off. Half way there dad lost control going down a hill and the trailer jack-knifed. Managed to get stuck between two banks and could go neither forward nor back. Blocked traffic for a good half hour while we tried to get the trailer off.
Limped home. And jumped into my car and drove to mart to beg a neighbour to buy one less animal so they could bring our lad home. Got home at 20 minutes past midnight 😡
