It's amazing when you consider how hopelessly awful Noel's lyrics were.

Like, always. I loved this more than anything, but it makes literally no sense at all. Means absolutely nothing.

I am reading Tony McCarroll's book at the moment (he's the first Oasis Drummer, sacked by Noel after the first Album)

It's mostly him slagging off Noel, but there are a few good stories in it ...

Like when Oasis were recording Definitely Maybe, The Stone Roses were trying to record The Second Coming a few miles up the road (in deepest Monmouthshire). Liam kepy being mistaken for Ian Brown in the local pub

After getting thrown out of one such establishment, Tony and Liam stole a tractor and drove up to the Roses' studio. They broke in and were about to be kicked out until Ian Brown said they could stay (Oasis were unknown at the time). Ian Brown talked utter bollcocks for hours while life enhancing products were taken. Eventually they sheepishly left and returned the tractor from whence it came.

Exactly. You try to be open minded but Sam Smith? That's how I would have sang the day I was rushed in for an emergency hernia operation.

Bit of a marmite band, Menswear. They wanted to be taken seriously as a credible rock band, yet their management try to peg them as the indie Take That. It would be pretty embarrassing to admit you bought their album.

Well, it's Psychedelic Night on BBC Four. Not sure if that will make the cut, again. Nothing new, as usual.

Elsewhere there is lots for fan of The Who (Whovians?) to enjoy scattered around the channels.

    Thursday

    7pm & 1am Top Of The Pops 1980
Tommy Vance presents an edition originally broadcast on October 16, 1980, with music by Showaddywaddy, Adam and the Ants, Matchbox, the Police, Madness and George Benson. Plus, guest appearances from Suzi Quatro, Dollar and Michael Palin

11.30pm The Windmill Lane Sessions (TG4)
The Windmill Lane Sessions aims to profile some of the best Irish and International musical acts on the scene right now. The exclusive content filmed at the iconic Windmill Lane Recording Studios features live recordings and exclusive interviews with music artists in the environment that they call home - the recording studio. With three new artists in each episode, the Windmill Lane Sessions gives viewers a chance to hear and see their favourite musicians, recorded live and unvarnished. This week the artists are Re, Original Rude Boys & Alien Envoy.

Midnight (Old) Later With Jools Holland (TG4)
Florence and the Machine perform songs from second album Ceremonials, the follow-up to platinum-selling 2009 debut Lungs, and Kentucky rockers My Morning Jacket showcase tracks from their sixth release Circuital. Tuareg musician Bombino makes his debut on the show, playing material from the critically acclaimed Agadez, and the Who's Pete Townshend chats to Jools about the re-release of the band's 1973 rock opera Quadrophenia, before performing two tracks. Rounding off the bill are Suede frontman Brett Anderson with material from Black Rainbows, Mary J Blige and singer Al Spx, alias Cold Specks, from Etobicoke, Canada

    Friday

    8pm TFI Friday (Channel 4)
Chris Evans hosts the lively entertainment show. The week's guests include singer Justin Bieber, actress Dawn French, hip hop stars Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, X-Men: Apocalypse actor Nicholas Hoult and synthpop duo Hurts

9pm & 1am Tubular Bells: The Mike Oldfield Story
An insight into the life of the acclaimed musician and the circumstances in which he - at 19 years of age - produced the biggest-selling instrumental album of all time, Tubular Bells. From life growing up seeking solace in music, to performing at the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony, Mike reveals the struggles behind his unprecedented success story. With contributions by Richard Branson and Danny Boyle

    10pm & 2am Psychedelic Britannia
The rise and fall of arguably the most visionary period in British music history, when between 1965 and 1970 a handful of dreamers re-imagined pop music. The psychedelic era produced some of the most ground-breaking music ever made, pioneered by young improvising bands like Soft Machine and Pink Floyd, then quickly taken to the charts by the likes of the Beatles, Procol Harum, Small Faces and Moody Blues. This film, narrated by Nigel Planer, features contributions and freshly shot performances from artists who lived and breathed the psych revolution

11pm & 3am Totally 60s Psychedelic Rock at the BBC
A compilation of the genre from programmes such as Colour Me Pop, How It Is, Top of the Pops and Once More with Felix. Performers include pre-rocker Status Quo, a rustic looking Incredible String band and a youthful Donovan. Plus, Bonzo Dog Doo Band, Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger and the Trinity, the Moody Blues, Joe Cocker, the Move, Procol Harum, Cream, Jimi Hendrix and the Who

    Midnight: Magical Mystery Tour Revisited
The making of the Beatles' self-directed TV movie Magical Mystery Tour, which originally aired on BBC1 on Boxing Day 1967 at the height of the band's popularity - but was greeted with disdain by the media and many viewers. The programme explores the creation of the surreal tale and investigates why it inspired such a furious critical reaction, and also asks whether opinions about the film have changed in subsequent years. With contributions by Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Peter Fonda, Martin Scorsese, Terry Gilliam, Neil Innes and Paul Merton

However, the pressures of fame take their toll on the youngster, who becomes the focus of a religious cult. Ken Russell's rock opera based on the Who's album, starring Roger Daltrey, Oliver Reed, Ann-Margret, Robert Powell, Jack Nicholson, Tina Turner and Keith Moon

    Oi! BBC4! NO!

    More feckin repeats. Boooo!

Ah, jesus. How much is that aul Sky Arts? It's probably worth it just for that stuff.

Meanwhile, someone sent me a link of who's on the LLS tomorrow. It's relevant here 'cos it's a bit music-y. But damned if I'll be the one to start the thread about it (unless no one else does by this time tomorrow). Put it this way, Builderplumber ain't gonna be happy.

I didn't realise that was a new one. A lot of these 'Britannia' Docs cover similar territory.

But sure I'll stick on a tape for the repeat tonight. Just in case it isn't repeated a dozen times before Christmas!

The psychedelia doc was interesting, the "Psychedelia at the beeb" programme stretched the definition a bit though.

It was a good programme but was in large part a cut and paste I think - everyone in it has been part of at least a couple of previous docs about the late 60s, prog rock, albums yadda yadda yadda.

Someone who pops up regularly on BBC Four music programmes is Keith Richards. He was the guest on Desert Island Discs on Radio 4 this week

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06kb0fw

He was in good form, as always. Mostly chose Classic Blues but also had an agonising decision about whether to bring a Mozart or Vivaldi record to the island.

Just been watching some documentaries on de YooToobs about Alan McGee and Creation Records. Turns out the sole reason he signed Super Furry Animals was because he wanted a Blur on his label (he already had Oasis, of course), and one of their songs (Something 4 The Weekend) to him sounded a bit like Blur.

So McGee had the best British band since The Beatles on his label.

    And Oasis too. :pac:

SFA should have had more success, they released loads of really great, catchy singles - they had the most UK top 40 hits without ever reaching the top 10. (their Welsh compatriots Gorky's Zygotic Mynci hold the even more depressing record of most top 75s without ever reaching the top 40 - don't get me started on how underrated they are...)
