Congrats PM - that's a really big jump in standard , tough going out there and fair play to you for gritting it out

Youre gonna kill me but Im gonna say it anyhow. You went into this training plan with more than 'niggles' and you know it. A lot of your training runs have been fighting sheer agony and you had to design a plan around that, otherwise you wouldnt have made it to the start line.

Im glad you cant remember what i shouted :pac: but with the pain on your face I was astonished that you kept going. It was a terrific example of sheer determination not to give up. Very impressive Muler :D

Well done P, good honest report. Your making serious improvements everytime you run a marathon, no reason why that won't continue for your next one. Enjoy the recovery.

Yeah will take the positives and march on !

You're a tough one, P, takes a lot of guts to push through that kind of pain! There's not much you could have done differently on the day. It's a great improvement despite the setback so well done.

Cheers D - Would just like to get one that doesn't need the toughness !!!

Tis but a scratch etc :D But yes you're right - training hasn't been ideal and was compromised a bit from underlying injuries. Need to get those sorted as part of the strategy for the next one.

Yesterday at 1:30 me and marathons were done. Today I'm off looking for a spring marathon to build towards from this current cycles base. :)

Exact same thing here. Running down Fosters Avenue yesterday, I swore never again. 2 hours later, I was trying to figure out how to fit in a marathon next year with baby on the way in the middle of May as I may not get to commit the required training time for Dublin.

So I was thinking about Connemarathon on Sunday April 10th - But that's hilly - The Manchester Marathon is on the same day - possible option

Limerick on Sunday May 1st or Belfast the following day - which might be very warm

East of Ireland have marathons every 3 weeks or so but I don't think they're for me

So then I was thinking about the Tralee Marathon on Sunday March 13th - and although probably less hilly than Connemara, it's still a fairly challenging course by all accounts.
Barcelona is on the same day - mid March temps in Barca would be in the high teens probably

Then there's more options if you want to go into the Summer to do it.

Congrats on yesterday by the way!

Well done again P - serious improvement in difficult circumstances. All the cards will fall right some day & you'll smash it. You should be very proud of what you did yesterday.

To echo everyone else, P... you looked a bit disappointed afterwards yesterday, but there's no way you should be... that's a great improvement and running through pain makes it even more impressive. Well done!

Yeah as things stand for me chances are it's Limerick early May (seems to be a flatter course than Cork) but Rotterdam is very appealing too if it could be done funds and logistics wise.

Emphasis on the bit :) - There is a bit there for missing the A goal but am overall happy with the improvement. Next time aim for 3:30 - blow and come home under 4. :pac::pac::pac:

You know Rotterdam is the right call. Screw Limerick. If you are going to do something so so wrong (26.2 miles is always wrong for the human body lets be honest), then do it right! :D Flat course, great organisation, and there's something great about running in such a big event abroad. All the Irish sort of come together into a small community after. Less likely to get muck weather too (though there's always a chance). It's one of the fastest marathons in the world, which attracts some of the best athletes in the world.

Limerick would probably work out almost as expensive anyway when you include hotel and petrol costs into the equation, all for a slower course, about 1/10th the level of organisation, and just another very "meh" sort of Irish road race.

Well done again yesterday. You were being a bit hard on yourself.

First things first, Well done on the 40+min? pb :)

Ok, now let's call a spade a spade. The marathon is an absolute bast*rd of a race. That's a fact. I don't think anyone will disagree?

It's the one race I feel I've never done myself justice in (from 7 attempts). But, just like you I've been making steady progress while consistently getting 'beaten' by it.

One of my friends rang me straight after the Berlin Marathon last year to congratulate me. He knew by the sound of my voice that I wasn't 'thrilled'. He told me I was making excuses for running a great time and couldn't really understand it (I thought I could run sub 2:55). I couldn't really disagree with him though, so copped myself on, stopped feeling sorry for myself and had a really great night with the gang. Two years ago, I'd had three goes at breaking 3:30 and failed every time. I was starting to believe that maybe I'd never do it. Now I feel like I'll probably run sub 3:30 pretty easily this Sunday off a very poor cycle of training.

In 2012, Pageant Messiah struggled over the finish line of the DCM in 5:30+ hours. The 2015 PM is a bit disappointed with his 4:11 in the same event. That alone is huge progress. Then you have the photos you posted last week for pictorial evidence. If you told the 2012 guy the times he was going to run at every distance this year, would he believe you? Although we can all be hard on ourselves at times in relation to hitting targets etc., sometimes you have to admit to yourself that you did ok ;)

And you know what, when you & I actually beat the marathon someday it will be so much sweeter......... :)

Sounds like you had a tough day out there. Fair play for toughing it out. Enjoy that massive pb. Sub 4 and beyond are not that far away.

From that perspective yeah that guy would have bitten your hand off for that time from Monday and the times during the year too.

I'm honestly not as disappointed as perhaps I came across in McGrattans. I think you've hit the nail on the head there. The marathon is that race that you can keep improving on and still feel like it beat you every time :)

Thanks dintbo. Yeah I did but it seems a lot of people did too looking at the table in the main thread. Sub 4 in Rotterdam ? ;)

Having done Limerick previously I wouldn't be rushing back. The organisation was good in fairness but the course is drab and not very well supported. Plus, it's Limerick.

Well done on the pb, it's a huge improvement on where you were and probably about right for the type of training. Get a proper plan put together for you for the spring marathon and with the base you've built up sub 4 will be a formality. It took me a couple of attempts to hit my target and I only achieved it when I did some proper training.

Are you coming to the WAC half in December?

Rotterdam is a brilliant race. Easy to get to, excellently organised (just get there early!) and a great night out after.

I'm always banging on about it but a bad run in Rotterdam is usually alot better than a good run on an Irish course. That might sound foolish but I think there's that much difference.

If you do Rotterdam, check out Hotel Emma. I'm pretty sure that's where I stayed. Basic enough but what more do you need. Think I paid 70-80 euro a night for the room. It's about a 10 min walk to the start line.

This was 5 and a half years ago of course.
